《Who Are You》Chapter 50

Taehyung drove mutely, the music wasn't on so I just focused on the black window panes of isolated buildings on this black night. The night sky always was my companion, but right now I don't feel like conversing with it.
"Noona..." Taehyung called out and later coughed awkwardly.
I shifted my glance towards him, "Hm?"
"Are you thinking anything?" he asked.
Yeah. If humans can't see air but can see water, can fishes see air but can't see water?
"Nothing specific, why?"
Go ahead and get in a pond if you wanna act like a silly goose. I warn you Taehyung.
"I'm sorry Noona," he bit his lower lip and gripped the steering tight. Well that was shocking.
"Why?" I asked. He blinked and two tears rolled down his cheeks. Fuck! What do I do now?
"Hey, hey, calm down. Park the car to the side first," I said and he complied. Like obviously, his safety first.
I bit my lower lip as I watched him bury his face in his palms. No baby bear, it's okay. I don't know how to handle someone crying. I only know how to joke. Then do it.
I inhaled deeply, "You know, a cough is just a crunchy breath." What the fuck?
"Huh?" He looked up.
"Yawn is just a boneless cough," I continued. I don't even know why that makes sense.
He chuckled, "What?" He blinked his eyes, waiting for me to continue.
"Blinking is like clapping your eyes!"
He laughed at that, finally.
"You know one more thing? Just remember that your eyelids are always applauding you and cheering on you even when no one is," I smiled.
"That's weirdly encouraging!"
"What can I say? I was born weird," I shrugged and then laughed.

He blessed me with his boxy smile, "I am sorry for bringing back Hyung's ex..."
"Bro bro, you know this is the thing I actually admired. The struggles you went through to get her back... It really reflects your care, concern and resolve towards Yoongi," I said genuinely.
"But didn't you guys liked each other. I am sorry, I thought you were hitting on him. But as I saw the connect between you both, I realized my mistake," he pouted sadly.
I smiled, "No Tae, you've got it all wrong. I wasn't hitting on him. I mean I was, but not seriously. We flirt with each other just like that. For fun. And honestly, if Jee, wait I'll call her Kim. If Kim really loved Yoongi, she would've returned sooner or later. You just expedited the process.
Yoongi has loved her for a very long time. Even after he thought that she cheated on him, for years he was waiting for her. When he found out that she died, it crushed him. He was broken... If he decides on getting back with her. It's reasonable, he loved her a lot."
"What about you?" He asked.
It's true that I feel something strong towards him. An emotion that no matter how much I try to obscure, I cannot. An emotion that makes me acknowledge that not everything is in my control, that makes my life more than just an empty dream.
I inhaled deeply, "What about me? Just because I look like a human doesn't mean I am one."
His eyes widened, "Y-You aren't human?"
"Taehyung," I spoke in a serious tone, "If I tell you something would you believe me?"
He nodded.
"I am an alien Taehyung, I live with my alien parents. The earth's about to end. So, we are sent here for some secret work that I am sorry I cannot tell you. My planet is K.345R."

His eyes widened even more and his lips parted in amazement. He blinked.
"For real? You're an alien? You look like a human!"
Fuck?! He really fell for that? Man, so naïve.
"Yeah."
"How dare you leak this information," he suddenly chided, "We are meant not to disclose this to anyone."
"W-what?"
"I am on the same mission as you. But, my planets' different. Kepler 497D. I'll report you to the higher authorities Miss Jee. You violated our protocols," he looked straight into my eyes and my heart thudded.
Abruptly, he started laughing hysterically. "You think I am a kid? You think I would fall for that?" He laughed and started the car again. Oh God, I was really taken aback.
"Man, I really thought for a hot second that I'll end up in an alien cell," I laughed and he reciprocated it.
"I am sorry for judging you too."
I sighed, "Finally. I was waiting for the day you realize. I don't know why I feel lowkey proud. But seriously, how did you find Kim?"
"I didn't know what was going on, so I first decided to know why they broke up as you said, Hyung loved her a lot. So, I contacted the college authorities from where I got a contact number. That number was no longer in service, so I asked my lawyer to just track the location. It took him quite a few days to do so but I found the last location in the City Hospital.
There I asked for her whereabouts and got to know that she was shifted to Chicago for her treatment. Then I contacted that hospital and finally came to know that she made it through the surgery. It took me a few connections to get her contact from there and finally we conversed."
"Woah!!" I was genuinely impressed by his efforts, "You could have asked me bro, tracking numbers and reaching out like that is a dice play for me."
"Oh really? How?"
I coughed awkwardly, "Just it is. Oh we're here already? It's the third house in this lane."
"House? These are freaking mansions!" He chuckled and I gave a crooked smile.

The Simulacrum
"He who fights with harem tropes should see to it that he himself does not become a harem protagonist. And if you gaze for long into a narrative, the narrative gazes also into you." --- Friedrich Nietzsche (probably?) How would you react if one day you woke up inside an environment running on tropes and clichés? For allegedly average high-schooler Leonard Dunning, this question became quite relevant when one day he woke up in a pristine city on a strange island in the middle of the Atlantic, without any memories, surrounded by classmates who are barely more than characterless placeholders, and with a classic indecisive harem protagonist and his impossibly beautiful love interests for friends. That would be hard to deal with already, yet his investigation into the tropes governing the world, trying to avoid harem shenanigans, and his odd blend of outside-context knowledge, unique abilities, and a penchant for causing trouble wherever he goes ends up dragging him into the center of the action anyway. Disclaimer: This is a tongue-in-cheek, slice of life romantic comedy, with occasional sprinkles of combat and mystery to spice things up. Please do not expect a straight up deconstruction beyond some in-universe meta-commentary by the characters.
