《Married By Chance》Chapter 57: Bad Idea.

Nicole and Amelia's outfits above.

"Emily."

"Hey! Where are you?" She asks over the phone.

"On my way."

Today is Nicole's birthday. Emily and I have been planning it for the past couple of weeks and we're so excited because the birthday girl has no idea.

"You were supposed to be here an hour ago."

"Sorry." I mumble.

"Are you avoiding me or something?"

"What? No!" I quickly lie. Thank you, Brian! I suck at keeping secrets, okay? The last thing I want is to blurt out to Emily her dad is in love with someone other than her mum.

"Really? I text you for fashion advice and the next thing get is a call from your stylist. Not that I'm not grateful, but you should have at least replied."

Guilt grows in my stomach. Emily would never ignore me like I've ignored her in the last couple of days. "I know. I'm sorry."

"Just drive safe and be here soon."

"Love you." I tell her then hang up.

****

"You've done an amazing job." I tell the event planner I hired for the party.

"We love a big budget." She shrugs with a smile.

"You guys did an awesome job. She's going to go insane." Tyler says.

Emily chuckles. "I hope so."

Nicole is about to come in. I'm so nervous.

"She's here!" Liam shouts from the window.

"Okay, everyone, shh!" I exclaim with a rushing excitement.

We hear the click of the door and the birthday girl comes in looking fabulous.

"Surprise!" We cheer and she gets startled for a second but then her eyes widen in realization.

"Oh my God!" She laughs.

"Happy Birthday!" Emily hugs her first.

"Thank you! Oh my God, Emily! I can't believe this."

She hugs me next. "Thank you, thank you. I love you."

"Happy Birthday, Nicole." I kiss her cheek.

****

Okay, the birthday was so much fun. I can't remember the last time I partied that hard. Nicole loves being the center of attention and she got that yesterday. The party wasn't that big, Emily and I only invited close friends and that's what made it perfect.

Everyone connected. We danced. The guys performed #BDAY with the karaoke machine and it was hilarious.

The most shocking thing about the party though was the present that Nicole got from my cousin, Julian. He wasn't even there but he sent her the latest Bentley, customized with her name and everything.

Nicole was pretty numb about it but I'm sure she will react later.

Also, being the best friend ever, she had her own surprise for us. She somehow convinced the president of Hardwood to let us walk with them during graduation so yay! I'm graduating in two weeks.

It's crazy because I'm a planner and this was just sprang on us. I'm happy about it though. Even though, Emily, Brian, Liam and I have a year left, we did start with the rest of the gang. Well, Emily and I did. Brian and Liam took a break so they're actually supposed to graduate this year. The four of us have a year left but I want to graduate with my friends. It's always been the dream.

I wake up cold the next day. The left side of the empty. Where's Adam? I look at the clock. It's 11:49. I slept in and Adam left for work.

I wonder why he didn't wake me up he like always does to say goodbye. I feel sad because I miss him so much. For some reason, when I'm around him, I feel a thousand times better than normal.

I get up from the bed and it takes me an hour and a half to shower and get ready. I know what I'm going to do today. I'm going to him. To Black Industries. I just want to be around him.

"Mrs Black." Brenda says when I come out of my bedroom.

"Hi."

"Good morning. I want to ask, when shall we start the move?"

"What move?" I ask in confusion.

"Mr Black has asked to have all your belongings moved to his bedroom."

I raise my eyebrow, surprised. "Really? When?"

"I think two days ago but I haven't seen you around."

I look at the mirror we have in the hallway and fix strands of my hair while talking to her. "His room is big but it can't possibly fit both of our things."

"I told him that and he said "this is what I pay you for. Make it work"."

I sigh. He liked to terrorize people, doesn't he? I turn around and face Brenda. "Just forget about the move now, okay?"

"Okay."

****

As I step into Black Industries, the cold air hits me. I still have my sunglasses on and my head is ducked down because I don't want to attract any attention. It's not everyday that the boss's wife decides to randomly show up.

"Amelia!" A voice shouts.

I freeze. Talk about being discreet. When I turn around I see him. Dressed in a navy suit with a matching tie and a white shirt, he strolls over to me.

"Damien." I smile.

"Hello, love." We hug and air kiss.

"Hi, how did you know it was me?"

"I saw your car with the valet. You know, the one like mine." He winks.

I laugh. "Yeah, I stole your car."

"Hey, she suits you." He says as we walk to the elevator.

"Thanks, so did you move to Connecticut or something?" I can't help but ask. Damien is from the UK but I always see him around.

"No but I can't help it, gorg. Your guy always seems to need me."

"Why?" I ask, somehow sounding irritated. Damn, am I jealous of Damien? Fuck, Amelia! Well, Adam never needs me. I'm always doing my thing and he's doing his.

"Guess, who his number one client is?"

"I don't know. Givenchy?" I joke.

"No, silly. It's my family."

"Oh. I didn't know that."

He replies with a smile. Damien is such a nice guy and he comes from a great family. I think him and Nicole will be a perfect match. She surely deserves better than Jullian.

When we arrive at Adam's floor, it's very quiet.

"Shit. It's silent here." Damien states.

"Yeah."

"I bet they have a meeting."

"Summer." Damien says as we reach the receptionists' desk.

"Good day, Mr Scott. Mrs Black what a pleasure." She smiles.

"Good to see you and please call me Amelia. Mrs Black is my mother-in-law." I laugh internally because I've always wanted to use that line.

"So is your boss around?" Damien asks. He's now munching on almonds that are displayed in a transparent glass container.

Summer looks at him with dreamy eyes. "Yeah, he's in his office." She says, blushing.

Someone has a crush.

When we walk by the few offices it's all quiet and the open office space is empty. I spot Chase's office and wonder if he's there.

Outside Adam's office, there's a desk with his secretary, Trish.

Damien and I give her our greetings and instead of knocking, he just barges into the office. I sigh and follow behind.

"What's up, men?"

"What the hell are doing here?" My dear husband's cold voice warms my ear.

"Look who I brought." Damien says as I step in.

"Amelia." Adam says, a smile spreading across his face but to my surprise, he's not alone. He's with Giselle.

He stands up from behind his desk and we walk towards each other and hug. I hold him, tight inhaling the scent that I've become addicted to. "Hi, baby."

"Hi."

"What a lovely surprise." He smiles.

"I miss you." I tell him honestly.

His doesn't say anything but bends down and kisses my lips.

"You guys should get a room." Damien says.

I pull away first, blushing and look down. Adam draws circles on my back and looks at Giselle. "Have you sent it?"

"Yes." She says and when I look at her, she seems sad. "I better get going." She says, standing up and somehow avoiding Adam's eyes.

What the hell is going on?

I take a good look at her and I must admit, she looks absolutely stunning. She's wearing a light blue Oscar de Larenta dress and black Amina Muaddi heels. Her hair is falling down her neck perfectly and her makeup is so beautiful.

"You two have met, right?" Damien breaks.

She looks at me with a kind smile. "Yes. It's always wonderful to see you, Amelia."

"You too. I love your shoes." I tell her. Awkward.

"Thank you. They're Amina." She shares, still smiling.

She seems so genuine that I don't believe she's being fake. She's actually a nice person which is why my concern increases when she says, "Adam, I'll see you tomorrow."

Adam nods, unbothered by whatever is going on. "Let me walk you out."

Her eyes widen like she's about to cry. "No, no. Don't worry about it."

"Okay." Adam says then smiles at her.

He can't be serious! Doesn't he see what's going on? Giselle is obviously upset with me being here. I know she's his ex.

He said he only loved Eva but now, I'm not sure. He has some weird connection with Giselle and I think that's why they're still very good friends.

Damien looks at me and Adam then to Giselle. "Yeah, we'll head out together." He says.

"Sure." She smiles softly at him.

"It's good seeing you again, Amelia." She says as she walks past Adam and I.

"You too." I lie.

"Bye, Adam."

He nods at her and when they walk out the door, he looks back at me. "I'm so glad you're here."

"Me too."

He takes my hand in his and we walk over to his desk. He takes a seat and I stand by the window. I look out and you can see the whole city. "The view here is spectacular."

"I agree." Adam says but he's looking at me so I blush. "You look beautiful." He adds.

"So do you." I tell him.

"How was the party last night?" He asks.

I smile remembering how good it was. "It was so fun and we got her cause she was so surprised."

"That's good."

"Why didn't you wake me up this morning before you left?" I ask him.

"I wanted you to have a good rest, you came in pretty late and you've been stressed with the planning."

My heart melts. Of course he was worried about him. He's so perfect.

"I really have. Thank you for thinking about me."

"Always."

I walk and lean against his desk. "Damien was telling me that his family is your biggest client." I share.

He looks surprised. "Really?"

"Yeah."

He shrugs and I roll my eyes. "What does that mean?"

"The airplane market is very luxurious, Amelia. Most of our clients are VIP so I try to avoid things like special treatments. Damien is always here because he doesn't have any friends in London."

I frown. "What why?"

He's such a good guy though.

"Probably because he slept with all their girlfriends."

"Really?"

"That's what he says." He shrugs.

"Ugh! And to think I even thought of setting him up with Nicole."

"Bad idea." Adam says quickly.

"Your best man and my maid of honor. It's kind of romantic."

"Damien doesn't to do relationship."

"Neither did you." I point.

He opens his mouth to argue but closes it. "Good point." He smiles and pulls me to his lap. Just I'm about to kiss him, I hear the door so I try to get up but he holds me back.

"Don't worry. It's Chase." He says.

"So this is why you're not on my ass about the meeting." Chase when he steps in and see the two of us.

I wonder how Adam knew it's him before he walked in. "You have a meeting?" I ask.

"Starts in five, gorgeous." Chase smiles at me.

I look at Adam then lean into his ear and whisper, "Maybe him and Nicole."

"Maybe." He says, amused.

****

I'm now eating the most delicious broccoli bowl ever. After Adam left for his meeting, Trish came in with a restaurant bag and gave it to me. Adam apparently ordered food for me without my knowledge.

He knows what I like so every time he gets me food, it's healthy and super delicious. I don't know if it's him, Ned or Wesley that knows all the good restaurants.

I hear cheering sounds outside. What is going on? I get up from the couch and go out.

"Are they done already?" I ask Trish.

"I don't think so. That was fast." She replies but then I see Adam, Chase and Damien.

"Was it a good meeting? What are you guys celebrating?" I ask.

"We just had the shortest meeting in the history of Black Industries." Chase replies, grinning.

"Why?"

"Because of you, obviously." Damien rolls his eyes. "I can't believe I flew in for this."

"Dude, we all know you don't fly in for the meetings." Chase taps him.

"You know, you didn't have to do this because of me. I don't mind waiting." I tell Adam when we're back in his office.

"I rather be with you than listen to Chase reading numbers." He says. "I was eager for him to stop."

"I thought you did most of the talking."

"No. The employees present the projects we have, Chase and his team make the calculations and try to predict the statistics, then I decide if it's worth it or not. It's pretty simple."

It doesn't sound simple. "So you did all that in forty minutes?"

"No." He answers not giving anything else.

"How long does it usually take you to do all this?"

"It depends on the company we're working with. If it's small, maybe six to seven hours but, we once had a twenty hour meeting."

My eyes widen. "What?! Isn't that overworking your staff?"

"It was mainly the executives and they were paid for their time." He shrugs.

"I don't know how you guys do it."

"The results are worth it. Failure has never been an option so we do whatever it takes."

"That's amazing."

"You said you wanted to tell me something." He reminds me.

"Oh yeah! Nicole convinced the president at Hardwood to let some of us walk with them at graduation."

He looks up at me. "Is that something you want?"

"I mean, yeah. I have two semesters left. One is mainly my internship and one other course and my Capstone project and my final semester is Capstone project 2 and project management." I tell him then continue, "I will probably be going in just like one or two times a week to see my supervisor."

"Congratulations then." He smiles.

"Thank you."

"Have you decided where you want to intern?"

"No, not yet."

"It's settled then." He said and I instantly knows what he means. He wants me to work here.

"What? No way."

"You said you like the vibe."

I chuckle at his use of the word "vibe" though that is exactly what I said. "I do but it's just weird. I don't want to have you as my boss."

"I'll be a good boss." He smiles, sexily and something tells me it's on purpose.

"Hahaha. Stop." I quickly look away before I crack.

****

I took a nap in his office and after he was done for the day, we left but he wanted us to have a celebratory dinner so we went to a restaurant near our house and had a nice meal.

"So you and Giselle hangout a lot?" I ask Adam as I take of my jacket when we reach home.

I really try to keep it in as much as I can. I told myself I wasn't going to talk to him about her but there's obviously something going and I don't want to lose my man.

"We're in business together."

"She's beautiful."

"She is." He agrees.

"Your type."

"So that's where you're going with this?" He asks, bored.

"You two seem close."

"She's a friend."

"She's also your ex." I push.

"Not the way you think. It wasn't that serious."

"So what a she? A fuck buddy like Simone?"

He frowns. "No. She was my girlfriend and watch your mouth."

"So you track me down when I have a dinner with a friend but you can hang out with all your exes to do God knows what." I tell him, suddenly feeling mad.

"I had a business meeting while you went out to dinner at probably the most romantic restaurant in town."

I narrow my eyes. "Just don't be a hypocrite."

"I thought I apologized." He says in disbelief.

"You were only sorry because I was upset."

"I wasn't thinking, okay? My mind tends to imagine the worse. You can go out with whom ever you want. I'm sorry." He say.

I cross my arms together. "How did you even know where I was?"

"A friend owns the restaurant."

"You weren't having me watched?"

His jaw twitches. "No, I wasn't. Stop doubting me."

"We need to have better communication and trust or else we're fucked."

"I agree with you." He says and I stare at him. He's being too amendable with me.

"What now?"

"It feels like you're avoiding the Giselle thing."

He runs his hand through his hair. "Fuck." He whispers, closing his eyes.

"You two have history!"

"And that's what it is. History. She's my past."

I narrow my eyes. "Is she though?"

"I don't know what you think went on."

"She seems to have a hold on you."

"We've known each other a long time and I think she's a good person."

"Then why did you break up with her?"

"I didn't."

"She broke up with you?"

He nods. Well, that makes things even worse!

"But-"

"Amelia." He cuts me off.

"What?"

"I'm done talking about this." He says and starts walking away.

"I'm not!" I tell him but he ignores me and starts climbing the stairs."

"Adam, are you serious?"

"Just come to bed." He says.

****

"Ugh!" I exclaim. My bracelet is stuck in my hair, adding to my other frustrations.

I seriously cannot believe him. I'm in my bedroom. Thank God I didn't give Brenda the go ahead to move me to his room. I need my own space, especially if he's going to be acting like a child.

Ow! I pulled on my hair. I try to remove my hand gently but it's not working. I don't even know how this happened.

"Need some help, baby?"

I turn around and see him, leaning against the door and he looks mouthwatering. He's showered and has changed into sweats. He raises his eyebrow at me when he realizes I'm ogling so I turn around, ignoring him.

"Let me." He says, standing above my head.

"I don't need your help." I tell him.

"I know, but I want to. Is that okay?" He asks with a hint of amusement.

"Fine."

I feel his hands on my hair and in like five seconds, he untangles the bracelet.

"There you go, pretty girl." He smiles.

I glare at him but mumble, "Thanks."

"I was waiting for you in bed." He says.

"Mmm." I mumble, opening the drawer.

"Can I ask you something?" He speaks with a more serious tone.

"Sure."

"Why do we always argue?"

"Because you're so damn stubborn." I snap.

"You seem very upset." He frowns.

"No shit."

"Don't say that."

I look up, glaring at him. "What's your problem with people swearing? You swear a lot."

"I don't have a problem with other people. I just don't like it when you do. You only swear when you're angry. I don't like it when you're angry. I'm sorry."

"No, you're not, Adam. You're only here because you feel bad that I'm mad at you."

"What's the difference?"

I just shake my head.

"Talk to me. What can I do?" He asks, utterly confused.

"Will you tell me about Giselle?"

He frowns. "Why?"

"Because I have the right to know about your past relationships just like how you use whatever resources you have to dig up mine."

"Only when I need to but you, you.....you're always bringing up my past!" He bursts, now fuming with anger.

"Oh, I'm sorry I'm trying to get to know the person I married!"

"My past is a trigger for me. I'm avoiding it for both our sakes."

That shuts me up. Adam does have a lot of unresolved issues with his past. The last thing I want is for him to fall into a dark state but I also want him to understand where I'm coming from. Sometimes he's like a child so I have to bend.
