《Married By Chance》Chapter 44: Make me cry.

Liam's outfit above.

You know at the beginning of my marriage, I pictured this moment in a billion ways.

Wow.

Liam, my ex-fiancé is standing right there in front of me and suddenly everything starts coming back. It feels like it was yesterday. All the laughter, the tears.

I know that I was going to see him again but no matter how much I imagined it, I find myself numb in the moment.

I don't know what to do so I start moving. I'm just going to go.

"Amelia," He starts, reaching for to touch me.

"No!" I snap.

I walk out the door and I see Adam walking towards us. "Everything okay?" He asks, looking at Liam, not me.

I glare at him and just head towards the entrance door and leave. Tears start falling down my cheeks as I walk down the stairs.

Our car is parked just down below and I see Kristen rushing to me. "Are you hurt, Mrs. Black?"

I shake my head. "Just take me home."

She opens the door for me and I go in.

"Mr. Black is coming now." She tells me and closes the door. A minute later, the door opens again and Adam seats then Wesley starts driving.

I can't believe what just happened. Liam is back! I couldn't even speak to him. It's crazy to think that he's someone that I was in love with, someone I was ready to share the rest of my life with.

Now, I'm in love with his brother who I kissed a few hours ago and is acting like nothing happened. Did he know Liam was there?

Is that why he wants a divorce?

I'm going to sign. There's no point of dragging this along. If Adam wants me, he would do something about it but sadly, he doesn't.

"Where are the papers?" I whisper, not looking at him.

"What papers?" He replies in his deep voice.

I roll my eyes. "The divorce papers. Isn't that why you took me to your parents' house?"

"No, I took you there because I asked Liam to come back....for you." He explains.

My head snaps to him. "You did what?!"

What the fuck? My blood is boiling. I feel like punching him in the face but unfortunately, my mother taught me to never hit someone.

"Stop the car, Wesley." I order.

"Keep driving." Adam tells him calmly then sighs. "Amelia, look," He moves close to me, moving his hands forward.

I move back, pressing my back against the door. "No! Don't touch me! How could you?"

He looks at me, in shock, lost of words.

"I did it for you." He finally says.

****

We enter the house in silence. The maids are taking our stuff upstairs. I take off my coat and head towards the elevator.

"Amelia."

I pause and slowly turn around.

"I thought this would make you happy."

"Why?" I cry. "Why in the world would you fucking think that?"

I don't understand him and he probably doesn't understand me also. What a fucking mess! I guess this our life.

I look at him. He looks calm and composed like he is all the time but he wasn't last night.

When we were kissing.

Now he's all powerful billionaire. Like nothing could break him, he has masked his emotions.

"He's the one you love, not me." He states.

I scoff, pushing my hair back. "What gives you the right to tell me how I feel? Do you see what's inside my heart? Can you read my mind?!" I yell.

"No but you can not have feelings for me. You don't know me. The person that I am when I'm around you is not actually me. That's me just trying to be your friend but I'm tired of putting off a front just to make you happy." He says with a cold look in his eyes.

He's too serious so I can't even wonder if he's joking. Is this the kind of person that I want to be with? The person I want to love me?

"So are you saying that our friendship or whatever we had was not real? You were just pretending?" I ask in a calmer tone.

"I wasn't but when I look back at those moments, I realize how different I am when I around you."

"I'm different when I am around you too. It's not a bad thing."

He clenches his jaw. "But it's different for me. I despise who I am when you're around. It's the weak version of myself."

"So what are you saying right now? What am I to you, Adam? A weakness?"

"Amelia, I care about you a lot but I'm not the man for you. The person you think I am is not really me. He is perhaps someone you want me to-"

"Stop!" I can't stop crying. "Is this who you want me to see you as? Someone that would hurt me and make cry?!" I yell.

"Of course not."

"You can't make your mind. You care about me but you don't want to ever be in a relationship with me then you kiss me and then you take me to see my ex! What is wrong with you?!"

He doesn't say anything so I take a deep breath.

"I'm going to ask you now and I want you to look me in the eye and tell me the truth."

"Okay." He whispers.

"Do you have feelings for me?"

I watch his jaw clench and without breaking eye contact, he says, "No."

I swallow hard and nod my head. "Great." I mutter then press the elevator button.

It opens and I go inside without giving Adam another look.

When I go inside my room, I lie on my bed and burst into tears.

Ten minutes later, someone starts knocking on the door. "Amelia!" Adam calls.

I ignore him and just close my eyes. I feel so stupid. Seriously, why did I even ask him?

He keeps on knocking and I angrily stand up and open the door, staring at his gorgeous face.

"What? What do you want?"

"I want to talk to you."

"No, you've said enough."

He sighs. "Amelia, I never want to hurt you."

"Well, you did! And you know the funny thing is after everything we've been through, you are the one person that I could trust to always have my back and be there for me. You're the one person that I thought would never hurt me but you've hurt me more than everyone, more than he did." I tell him then shut the door to his face.

****

The following day, I locked myself in my room. Adam has been here about five times, knocking and begging me to open but I ignore him.

There's nothing left to say.

I can't believe that I was so stupid. I shouldn't have kissed him but damn, that kiss! Yeah, I have no regrets and I felt him when we were kissing, he was all in.

How can he just change his mind and then ask Liam to come back? The reason why this hurts so much is that if Adam really ask his brother to come back because of me, it means that he does not give a fuck about me.

I let out a deep breath and lay on my back, staring at the ceiling. I never thought that I'd be the kind of girl that goes for a guy who doesn't want her. I mean, I am better than that.

I guess you can't really having all.

I hear a knocking sound on my door.

Here we go again!

"Amelia, it's me."

Shit! "Mum? What are you doing here?"

"I came to see you, of course." She replies.

"Ummm..."

"I come bearing gifts. Your favorite eclairs from Paris." She says in an inviting tone.

I roll my eyes. I know she didn't go to Paris. Why is she lying?

"Thanks for coming, mum but I'm not really in the mood to entertain guests."

"Amelia Roselyn Smith, how dare you! I am your mother not a guest. Open the door this instant."

I sigh out loud. I've known this woman my whole life. She doesn't give up. She can stay here for hours so I save us both time and stand up to open the door.

I see her holding a pastry box and my eyes widen. It's the box from Papillon Bakery.

Eclairs! They smell so good.

"Hi, honey." She hugs me and I hug her back tightly.

"How are you?"

"Not good."

"Hush, it's okay. Everything is going to be alright." She rubs my back.

I pull away from her and give her a desperate look. "Do I have any jobs this month? Fashion shows or photo shoots? I will do anything."

"No. I cancelled everything because you have your finals coming up in a few weeks and I know you have a lot of projects to work on."

"I know but I really need a break. Can't you do something?"

She starts shaking her head. "Amelia-"

"Or can I go to Paris and stay with grandma?" I quickly add.

She gives me a disapproving look again and before she says anything I bring my hands together and beg her. "Please, mum. Please, mummy."

She chuckles, fixing her hair. "You can't always run away when things get hard."

"Why not?" I frown.

She sighs. "Times like this are when I regret not spending enough time with you. There are things that I'm surprised you don't understand at your age."

Even though my mum and I are close, we rarely talk about deep stuff. When I was younger, we had a more formal relationship. I saw her as more of manager than the person who gave birth to me. She was very hard on me and made sure I perfect in everything.

To be be honest, I used to be scared of her. It was after my high school graduation that she started easing up and stopped forcing me to things that I didn't want to. We started having a more loving relationship and we would go shopping and stuff.

"You're confusing me."

"I felt so ashamed of myself because of the way you became after you and Liam broke up. I should have taught you how to be a stronger." She says, taking my hand in hers.

"You don't need a man to make you happy, sweetie. I can't count how many times your father and I have broken up and even though I love him to death, I used those times to love myself even more."

"This is different." I tell her because it is.

She pushes her blonde hair back. "You are extraordinarily beautiful and such a precious young woman. There is so much power in you that you don't even know yet. You have to dive into your soul and embrace that. Being you is just enough."

"But I think love him, mum. What am I going to do?" I've never been in a situation like this.

"I know but look at you, you're breathing aren't, you? You don't need to put your life on hold just because a man doesn't love you back. You have to be strong."

My chest tightens. "I'm just hurting too much."

"I know, honey but you know what? A woman like you doesn't anyone. You can achieve everything you want by yourself but men? Men can't survive without us and a beautiful girl like you deserves to be worshipped by a man."

I took a deep breath. This conversation is stressing me out. I know Adam and he is not like most men. He's been doing fine by himself for such a long time.

"He loves you." My mother blurts.

"What?"

"Adam loved you when he was a little boy and he still does."

"No, he doesn't. He wants a divorce!"

She scoffs. "Oh, please. Feelings aside, no man in their right mind would divorce you, especially a powerful businessman like Adam. You're not just his wife, you're his biggest investment. He treasures you."

Even though it pains to think this, what she's saying is true. Adam Black and his company benefited a lot from our wedding. My father's company is one of the top in the United States, even bigger than Adam's. After our wedding, his company was gifted a high percentage of shares from Smith Corporations.

"Yes, he does. He just doesn't know it yet. I have eyes in this house, I know what goes around and also from what you told me, I know that he would do anything for your happiness."

"He sees that as an obligation because I was forced to marry him."

"Wasn't he forced as well? It's not an obligation, he made a choice because he cares for you. Men are clueless, Amelia especially about their feelings. He's going to realize that he has feelings for you sooner or later so you better stand up and take a fucking shower, it's not the end of the world."

I roll my eyes. "Fine.

"You wanna eat your eclairs now?"

I nod and take start opening the box. "Thank you for this. How did you get them?"

"I heard you were upset so I sent Jessica to Paris last night."

I look at her with a raised eyebrow. "Are you serious?"

"Yeah." She shrugs.

Of course. I'm not that surprised. My mum has done crazier things. She's very over the top.

At least Jessica, her assistant got a free trip to Paris.

****

After I showered and got dressed, my mother and I went for shopping and spa day, I asked her to drop me at my therapist's office but now, sitting here, I feel like it's a bad idea.

"Hello?"

I ignore her.

"Amelia? Are you going to talk?"

I ignore her again.

"Fine, I'm going to jump in and ask. Does you being here has something to do with Liam's return?"

My heart drops as I hear his name. I look at Dr Sloan with a raised eyebrow.

"He was the reason you came the last time and you stopped coming when you realized you were over him, right?"

"How did you know that he was back?" I ask softly.

"I read the news." She says in an obvious tone.

"You don't seem like the person that focuses on socialite gossip."

"Well, seeing that most of them are my clients, it is kind of part of my job."

I nod simply. "I'm not here because of him. I mean, he's part of the reason but he's not the main the reason."

"What is?"

"I think I'm in love."

"Oh." She smiles but when she notices my expression, she adds, "That's a good thing, isn't it?"

"Uh, yes."

"Then why do you seem tense? Like it's such a bad or strange thing to you?"

"It is very strange." I confirm.

"Why? You've been in love before."

"That's the problem. I'm not sure I was before."

"With Liam?"

"Yes." I answer then add, "I know you think I'm crazy considering how I acted after we broke up but I'm telling you the truth."

"What made you come to that realization?"

"I told you. I've fallen for someone."

"May I ask who that is?"

I nervously bite my lip. "It's um, it's Adam."

"Adam Black?" She smiles, no surprise in her eyes.

"Yes." I smile back, nodding.

"Okay."

I sigh. "I know it's dangerous, it's crazy but it's the best feeling in the world."

"Why do you think it's dangerous?"

"Let's face it, Adam isn't exactly like every guy out there."

"You're right." She says, seriously then asks how it all started.

I smile at the memory. "I mean, right from the first moment I saw him, he made my heart drop but then he insulted me and I became very angry."

I will never forget the first time I saw him. A masculine perfection. Beautiful face, perfect hair and body. He had a presence and he was oozing elegance and power.

My type of guy.

"Insulted you?"

"Yes. He asked if I was stupid. I honestly think that if he wasn't very rude, I would have fallen in love with him at that moment but he was, so I marked him as a jerk in my head." I explain.

"When was this?"

"Almost two years ago. About a week or so before Liam and I were paired by Dr Henley."

"Oh wow."

"Yes so you know the rest of the story."

"I know you and Liam's story but I don't know where Adam fits into all that. Did you see him around when you and Liam were together?"

"Um, yeah but I didn't like him because he was a jerk. I began having feelings for him after we got married. In the past, it was just attraction because you know, he's very good looking."

"Yes." She agrees with a smirk.

Even someone like Dr Sloan, married with kids can't deny how handsome and sexy Adam is.

"The first thing that attracted me to him aside from his looks was how different he was from all the guys I know. When I first saw him, I felt a familiarity but at the same time there was something very mysterious about him."

I've lived here in Bluefall my whole life, I've travelled to so many places and met so many people. I attended parties and stuff and meet a lot of guys but Adam was unlike any guy I've ever met. He stood out and even when I was with Liam, I was very curious about him.

It's like there's all the men in the world then there's Adam. I can't really explain. I just felt really drawn and connected to him in a certain way even before I got to know him.

"After we got married and we became friends, I started realizing what an incredible person he is. He's very gentle and sweet with me and I have never met someone who is just so good to me without any expectations."

"That's very good, Amelia but I'm sensing that something is wrong."

"Um... he doesn't feel the same." I start telling her everything. From when I confessed my feelings to Adam to two nights ago when I asked him how he felt.

"That is....." She starts but then pauses, looking down.

"What? You think I'm pathetic, right?" I panic.

She looks back at me, questionably. "No, um but the time is up. I can't wait for our next session."

"Oh." I say then stand up.

She always does another session immediately after me. It's a man in his thirties who is usually crying every time I see him.

I tell Bridget goodbye then leave the office and immediately dial Emily's number. "Hey, I need your help."

****

I've always been good at running. I guess it's kind of my thing. I look at Emily who is staring at me with worry in her eyes.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" She asks.

"Yes."

"Alright. Here's everything you asked for." She hands me a bag.

I pull her into a hug. "Thank you so much, Em."

She doesn't hug me back and after, I pull away, she stares at me with a worried look.

"You're welcome but what it's going on, Amelia? No one has heard from you in days and now it's kind of weird that you called me to help you escape from your bodyguards. Is everything okay?"

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing. I'm escaping from my bodyguards but in actuality, it's the person who pays them that I want nothing to do with at the moment.

I don't want to go back to his house and see him Everyday so I booked a room in Tyler's hotel and texted him for his help.

I start stripping. "I will explain everything later, I promise. Did you bring the wig?"

"Yes, here it is." She hands it to me.

"Thanks." I collect it from her and start putting it on. I look at myself in the mirror and fix some strands. I don't look bad. Maybe I'll go blonde soon.

I slide my dress of and put on the outfit Emily brought for me. It's all black.

"How do I look?'
