《Seeing Red》When in Var

The days flew by quick once I was in Var, the trip to the place itself had left me speechless. I was unaware of the fact the little district had its own airport! Quite close to the track that too, he picked me up, dropped me off at the hotel and went back to the circuit.
I spent my days exploring the place on my own, eating at little eateries and taking pictures. It was finally the start of the race weekend, I was excited about the race but nervous because I was going to be meeting his trusted people.
People who have worked with him from way before, I was afraid they're going to figure out this little arrangement. Charles was confident that they wouldn't know, he was nervous about being photographed.
"What if we don't look couple-y enough?" He asked pulling into the parking lot.
"I'm going to be walking next to you, that should be enough." I shrugged.
"Oh and um can we fake laugh of something when you spot photographers?"
"Why fake? I'm capable of making you actually laugh." I stepped out of the car.
"Yeah right." He rolled putting on his shades, that's when I noticed his wrist.
"You're still wearing the Bandana." I smiled.
He nodded, we walked to the gates and he was already hounded by photographers. I noticed three people who looked familiar, I had always seen them around Charles. I asked him who they were, he explained that they were Andrea, his trainer, Jock, his engineer and Nicolas his manager and biggest supporter.
"So, um I'll stand here. You go talk to them."
"No, you're going to walk with us to the hospitality unit."
"I'm nervous, oh look Kym's standing there!" I moved my head to his direction.
"Deploy the fake laughs!" He laughed.
"We look like idiots!" I added,
The three men looked at us in confusion as we walked towards them, he introduced me to them and went into deep conversation with his engineer and Nicolas. Andrea was sweet, he had a smile on his face and offered to walk me to the balconies above the pit-lane. I thanked him and said that I could go myself, he could continue his work with Charles.
I walked into the balcony and was greeted by some of the ambassadors, I was offered a glass of champagne the minute they noticed the Ferrari pass around my neck. A woman, walked towards me with a big grin.

"Good morning ma'am, I'm Natalie, if you need anything just yell my name and I'll be here, you can call me Nat." she smiled.
"Good morning Natalie, you can call me Tara! Thanks so much."
"The race doesn't start until like in an hour, it's quite sunny today. Come sit inside!" She expressed her concern.
"I might have to run down to the pits, so I better stay here."
"You do you!" She smiled.
I saw Charles below, waving at me. I sprinted down, some of the wives and girlfriends were still there talking to their partners.
"Good luck for the race!" I approached him uncertain if I should hug him.
"Thanks!" He pulled me in for a hug. "Can I ask you to do something?"
"Sure?"
"Can you stay in the balcony? And like wave and stuff? It'll be convincing ."
"I'll do it." I smiled.
I ran back to the place and was greeted by Nat, she was surrounded by guests. All with big smiles and praising her, what can I say? She was a warm person, she made me feel welcome despite never knowing her.
"Tara!" She beamed at me, "Sitting in or..."
"Standing out in the balcony!" I squealed.
I could hear the engines, all roaring as they tore through the pit lane. They only got louder as they finally made their way to the starting line, there his red car was, a space behind the leader of the pack.
Natalie wasn't lying about it being sunny, in a matter of minutes my throat was parched. God knows how many lemonades I had trying to avoid being dehydrated, there came a time when I couldn't even see because of the glare.
"Tara come inside it's so sunny!" I heard her voice.
"No, it's all good! I'm fine! See! There Charles goes!" I pointed to a red car.
"That's an Alfa Romeo, certainly not Charles! Come inside!" She insisted.
"The race is almost over! It's only the last lap!" I resisted.
The race was over, Charles fell down to fourth place at the end of the race. That's what Nat told me because now I was exhausted, my head was throbbing and no amount of lemonades made me feel good.
"Is she alright?" A familiar voice asked.
I couldn't see very clearly, it was a man in red racing overalls. Was it Charles? Why was Natalie clinging on to his arms? Did she just plant a kiss on him!?

"What!" I heard myself yell.
"Tara, how are you feeling?" Natalie approached me.
When the two of them finally got nearer to me I realised it was Arthur, he looked worried.
"Thanks for taking care of me Nat, I'm good!" I beamed.
"So you've met?" He asked us.
"Yeah?" I looked at him in confusion.
"How silly of me! Tara, this is Natalie, my girlfriend. But you can call her Nat!" He cooed looking at her.
"Both of you are adorable!" I bubbled.
"Natalie, this is Tara. She's dating Charles." He introduced me to her.
"I've been with her all day and she didn't even tell me!" Natalie laughed.
"Yeah I was too busy not trying to faint." I joked.
"I told her to come sit inside so many times but she stood in the sun the whole race!" Nat shook her head.
"Charles asked me to-"
"He's being a garbage boyfriend I'm going to go talk to him." Arthur left the place.
"What's that about?" I laughed.
"No idea," Nat shrugged her shoulder, "Do you want more lemonade? Some water?"
"I'm good! Thank you so much for taking care of me." I hugged Nat.
"Take care! And stay hydrated!" She hugged me back.
I thanked her and decided to walk towards the Ferrari units, he was no where to be seen so I headed in and decided to sit on one of the chairs.
I felt a lot better, I saw Andrea waving at me I walked to the table he was sitting. I kept fidgeting with my bracelet, what was I supposed to talk to him about?
"Hello! Tara, how did you find the race?"
"It was a thrill! But it's a shame Charles couldn't keep his place."
"You're interested in the sport?"
"Since I was a kid!" I smiled.
We talked about the racing legends and our favourite tracks of all times, he told me about Charles' training regime and the silly things he did.
"He snuck out?"
"To go eat Tiramisu!" Andrea laughed.
"What's going on here? Bonding at my expense?" We saw Charles walk into the unit with his Press officer.
"Good race Charles, Andrea was telling me about your 'adventures'." I smiled.
"See! This is what I was telling you, my girlfriend bullies me." He looked at his Press officer.
"If that keeps him humble, continue doing it!" She encouraged me.
"I'm so glad you're conscious." He smiled.
"Why would I not be?"
"Arthur and Nat scared me, they said you nearly fainted from standing in the sun."
"Well, it was sunny and I couldn't actually watch any proper racing because I couldn't-"
"I'm so sorry! It's my fault-"
"No it's not! I shouldn't have forgotten my sunglasses-"
"No it was irrational of me to expect you to stand in the balcony the whole race." He sighed.
"Eh it's okay, I'll head back to the hotel now." I yawned.
"Wait a few minutes, let me just talk to my engineers and we'll be off. I have to attend a sponsor event in the town tonight." He explained leaving to meet his engineers.
I didn't understand how he had so much energy after driving a rocket around for about 90 minutes, addressing the media, now talking and analysing information with engineers and then go to an event.
I stood in the sun for 90 minutes and I was dehydrated and tired, I wanted to nap away. I saw a text from Harriet and decided to call her up and tell her about my day.
Time flew on my call with her and Julia, both of them were literally squealing as they heard everything I said, Harriet once again got to play her trumpet of Charles is a shitty boyfriend.
"Let's get going!" I heard him.
Andrea offered to drive us back, while Charles and I sat in the backseat of the car. I rested my head against the window and was starting to drift asleep.
"We're here lovebirds!" Andrea laughed.
I woke up and realised I couldn't move my head, I had fallen asleep on him. His hand held my head to his chest and he too, was fast asleep. My heart skipped a beat, I just froze there.
"Charles, we're here." I whispered.
"Oh!" He woke up and let go off me.
He let go a little too suddenly, is it fair to say it pained my heart a little? He freshened up and was off to the city, and I was left in my room, all alone.
