•••••••••••••••••••••
(Y/n) stared up at the revenants standing guard. They stood by the ladder, which was raised and prevented anyone from escaping the pit. Pacing around restlessly, she nibbled at her fingernails. Chewing on her fingernails had become a bad habit of hers whenever she was anxious or frightened. She mumbled incoherently to herself before coming to a stop when someone grabbed her hand. Looking at who it was, she saw her boyfriend, Oliver.
"It's all right, (Y/n)," Oliver said, trying to calm her. "I know you're scared, but pacing and biting your nails isn't going to help. Just try to relax, okay?"
She gazed into his emerald eyes before sighing. "You're right." Sitting down beside him, she glanced around at the other revenants that had been captured and forced to hunt for blood beads. With a sorrowful frown, she leaned her head against his shoulder. "I don't know how much longer I'll be able to do this."
Oliver entwined his fingers with hers. "Everything's gonna be okay, I promise."
(Y/n) couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding even after listening to him. "I hope you're right, Oliver." Closing her eyes, she welcomed his warmth and fell asleep.
However, her eyes flew open a few seconds later as they heard shouting from above. Unconsciously, she withdrew her hand from Oliver's. Looking up, she saw the two revenants on duty toss two girls into the pit. They both groaned form the impact, pushing themselves off the ground.
The (h/c)-haired girl watched as the two female revenants moved over to one of the stone columns and sat down beside one another. The sunset-haired one laid her head in her companion's lap and fell asleep with seconds. The scantily-cladded revenant combed her hands through her friend's hair before falling asleep herself.
Drawing her attention away from them, (Y/n) snuggled closer into Oliver's side. Her head returned to his shoulder as one of her hands found its way back into his. Once she was comfortable, he reclined his head against hers with a heavy sigh.
(Y/n) was tempted to ask what was wrong, but she refrained from questioning him when she knew all too well what the problem was. They'd been captured a couple weeks ago by a group of wandering revenants and had only ever left the pit to search for blood beads against their will. Neither one of them were sure just how much longer they'd survive whether they'd lose themselves to a frenzy or be killed at the hands of the revenants who captured them.
An hour passed before Oliver and (Y/n) were startled by a booming voice calling out their numbers. Reluctantly, the couple grabbed purifier masks and headed up the ladder that was lowered for them. Hauling themselves up to the surface alongside the two new female revenants, they listened to the man in charge complain about the dried up mistle.
The four watched in silence as another male revenant was beaten with the stock of a bayonet rifle. (Y/n) took a step closer to Oliver when the lead revenant approached them, holding a blood bead in one hand. "You see, it's only a short time before the collectors come to take our levy. But once they do, I'm afraid we won't have any blood beads to give them. If we don't find some, Silva's hounds will strip the shirts right off our backs." He turned around, glancing over his shoulder at the boy on the ground. "Well, that's the long and short of it."

"Wh-Why does it have to be us?" The collapsed revenant stuttered.
"Don't ask me. The stupid levy system was Silva's idea. If you have a complaint, I suggest you take it up with him!"
The short-haired man who struck him with a bayonet rifle grabbed the frightened revenant and hauled him to his feet. "You lot go first. Get to work!"
Oliver, (Y/n), and the two new female revenants watched as he and another boy were escorted to the tunnel entrance.
The sunset-haired girl tried to pursue them, but Oliver stopped her. "Don't. There's a better time and place. For now, we just have to obey."
She nodded in understanding. "All right."
(Y/n) tensed up when the two revenants returned and told them they were next. The four followed them, but were soon halted by the lead revenant. He grabbed the white-haired girl's shoulder and pulled her back. "Whoa there. You wait here with us." Looking away from her, he glanced at the cerulean-eyed female. "You can have this one back when you return. In exchange for any blood beads, of course."
She stepped forward, but (Y/n) stopped her and whispered, "It'll be fine. Like Oliver said, there's a better time and place."
Pushed forward by the guards, Oliver, (Y/n), and the unknown female revenant trekked down the ramp into the parking garage and ignored the leader when he taunted them by mentioning the Hunter. Arriving at the entrance leading into the tunnels, they stared down into the darkness. Without warning, the trio was shoved by the guards and fell into the hole.
(Y/n) grunted in pain, pushing her aching body off the ground. Oliver helped her to her feet, checking over her for any injuries. When seeing she was fine, he looked over at the other girl. "Hey, you okay?"
"I'm fine," she replied.
Oliver glances up and noticed the ladder was too far up for them to reach. "It looks like we can't get back up from here. We'll have to look for another way back." He then looked back at her and introduced himself. "Oh. I'm Oliver Collins, by the way. Nice to meet you!" He extended his hand out, waiting for her to shake it.
"I'm Syra," she answered, shaking his hand.
"And this is (Y/n)," Oliver said, gesturing to his girlfriend.
"A pleasure," said girl responded, her smile hidden underneath her mask.
"It's nice to meet you both," Syra said.
(Y/n) glances between the two. "Let's hurry and find a way out of here. I don't want to be down here for long."
"I couldn't agree more."
The trio unsheathe their weapons and trudge through the tunnels. The skeletal remains of what once used to be a parking garage were infested with the Lost. They were able to handle the enemies with ease, pushing forward and delving deeper into the tunnels.
Eventually, they found themselves leaving the remains of the parking garage and entering the tunnels that were located around it. Syra led the way, guiding them through the twists and turns.
The group stumbled upon one of the revenants who entered the tunnels before them. Oliver rushes over to the hunched-over revenant, throwing caution to the wind. "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"
(Y/n) felt a familiar foreboding sensation and gripped her (w/c) tightly. "Oliver, I wouldn't..."
The revenant snapped his head in Oliver's direction, revealing his glowing red eyes. Seeing he frenzied and now joined the Lost, Oliver gasped in shock with wide eyes. He tried to avoid him when he pounced, but his mask was struck and his body was sent flying back from the impact.

(Y/n) screamed out in fear and ran to Oliver while Syra dealt with the frenzied revenant. She saw he was unconscious and analyzed the damage to his mask. Placing his head in her lap, she wondered how she could fix his mask before it was too late.
Syra walked over and kneeled beside them. "Is he...?"
The (e/c)-eyed girl tried her best to reassure her. "He'll be fine. I'll make sure of it. I'm going to stay with him. You need to find a way out of here, okay?"
"I can't just leave you," Syra retorts.
"We'll be right behind you. Your friend needs help, doesn't she? You need to find some blood beads so you can get her back."
Syra knew (Y/n) was right and couldn't argue. "All right, but please be safe."
(Y/n) nodded and watched Syra disappear before tending to Oliver. She examined his mask once more and realized there was no way she could fix it. "Dammit..." She muttered. Wondering what she could do for him, her hand brushed against her own purifier mask and an idea came to mind. Detaching her mask from the frame, she replaced Oliver's damaged mask with hers. She smiled sorrowfully down at him, stroking his hair. "Sorry, Oliver. I know you wouldn't approve of this idea, but it's the only thing I can think of." Leaning down, she placed a kiss on his cheek. "I love you so much."
By the time Oliver regained consciousness, it was already too late. He pushed himself off the ground and looked around in confusion. He was all alone. "(Y/n)?" Grabbing his weapon, he ran through the tunnels in search of his girlfriend and his new acquaintance. While scouting for them, he noticed the lack of enemies and wondered if the two girls had escaped while he was unconscious.
When he came across a bloodspring that was blossoming with blood beads, he took a couple before traveling up the pathway and reentering the parking garage. The sound of fighting caught his attention and he ran as fast as he could. Opening a door, he spotted Syra and another revenant fighting against the Lost. Seeing an assailant sneaking up behind him, he swung his hammer and killed it with a single blow.
Once all the Lost were annihilated, Oliver called out to Syra and rushed over to her and the unknown revenant. "Have you seen (Y/n)?"
"She wasn't with you?" Syra asked.
"No," he shook his head. "Please, we have to find her."
Syra glances at the stranger who'd been accompanying her for a short while and questioned him. "Would you help us?"
The stranger thought for a second before nodding. "Let's keep pushing forward. We'll keep an eye out for her."
"Thank you," Oliver sighed in relief.
The trio navigated through the parking garage in search of the exit and (Y/n). None of the Lost stood a chance against them, not even the larger ones.
Eventually, the group reached the surface and found no trace of (Y/n). Oliver couldn't hide his worry as he spoke. "Where could she have gone?"
"Maybe she-" Syra began, but she abruptly stopped when they reached the top of the ramp. Her eyes went wide after seeing the bodies of the revenants who captured her and Io only hours ago. Among the bodies that were slowly vaporizing into ash, she spotted someone hunched over Io's unconscious form. "(Y/n)!" She shouted, running toward the girl.
With jerky movements, (Y/n) stood up and faced the others. Her eyes were glowing a deep crimson, a menacing growl emitting from her throat as she eyed the group.
Oliver's eyes widen in horror. "N-No..."
"Once someone is lost, they can never come back," the stranger stated, readying his blade.
"No!" Oliver wailed. "We can't-! I can't-!"
"Oliver," Syra mumbled melancholically. "I'm sorry, but there's no other way."
"There's no way I can kill her!" He protested.
"You won't have to," the stranger proclaimed. "Leave this to us."
"B-But...!"
"Would you rather she remain lost?" The sunset-haired girl inquired.
Oliver looked away, a few stray tears trailing down his cheeks. "No..."
"Then let us do this, Oliver."
"No," he replied, grabbing his hammer. "I won't stand on the sideline. The least I can do is end her suffering."
Before anyone could reply, (Y/n) picked up her (w/c) and swung it at them with a feral hiss. Oliver and Syra backed away while the stranger blocked the attack. He pushed her back and delivered a few slashes to her sides before being forced to dodge her next attack. Syra leapt at the girl and slashed at her back while Oliver focused on using his gifts.
When the stranger delivered another blow, (Y/n) jumped back and tossed her (w/c) aside. With a howl, her body was consumed by a cloud of miasma. In the blink of an eye, her body transformed and the miasma dispersed to reveal her newest form.

Lifting her duel blades, the Lost flew toward the trio and swung them around wildly in a desperate attempt to strike them down. The trio successfully blocked her flurry of attacks before setting out on the offensive.
Just as their blades were about to clash, the sound of bells echoed throughout the city. The female Lost froze in mid-swing before snapping out of her petrified state. Withdrawing her blades, she flew higher into the air before disappearing out of sight.
"(Y/n)!" Oliver shouted desperately. He wanted to follow her, but a pile of rubble and cars prevented him from doing so.
Syra went to check on Io while the stranger stared in the direction the Lost vanished, wondering why she suddenly retreated. Oliver fell to his knees, dragging his fingernails across the ground in frustration and creating ribbons of blood. A broken, heart-wrenching cry echoed from him as he wailed out his lover's name at the top of his lungs.
After Syra, Io, and the stranger, who they now knew as Louis, walked over to the broken Oliver. Syra kneeled down beside him and placed a comforting hand on his back. "Oliver..."
"We should head to safety. Our battle most definitely drew the attention of the Lost in the area," Louis said.
Like a puppet missing a few strings, Oliver managed to pull himself to his feet with a small nod. He dragged his body, following Louis to his base of operation. He wasn't sure how he was going to cope with the loss of (Y/n) or how he would be able to live on without her. She was his whole world and within only a few hours, he'd lost her. There was nobody to anchor him to this world anymore. The one person who truly made him happy was gone. His bright world was now plunged into darkness with no sign of hope.
