••••••••••••••••••••

A week after the group's exploration of the dried-up trenches and the howling pit, (Y/n) told them of the goddess statue located in the park ruins. It was one of the many secrets she learned during her time as a Peace Keeper. With no other leads, Louis, Yakumo, and Echo departed from the church and headed back to the park ruins, where they rendezvoused with (Y/n).

Acting as a guide, the Peace Keeper led her companions to the goddess statue. Louis discovered a switch and flipped it. The ladder not too far away lowered, giving them access to a new area. While Louis and Echo climbed the ladder, Yakumo placed his free hand on his hip. "You couldn't have flown us up there?"

"I may have wings, but that doesn't make me a carrier pigeon. Now get your ass up that ladder," (Y/n) groaned. "It'll be quicker if you three climbed instead of waiting for a free lift."

Yakumo smirked. "Whatever you say, (Y/n)."

She smacked him with her wing, earning a hiss of pain from him before flying up. Her wings folded up against her back as she watched her significant other climb up the ladder. When he reached the top and joined them, she continued to guide them as they entered a tunnel. Their trek through the passageway was windy, narrow, and long.

"Where does this lead?" Louis asked, staring at (Y/n)'s back.

"The Cathedral of the Sacred Blood. Are you familiar with it?" The Peace Keeper questioned.

"Not one bit," Yakumo answered. "I don't remember a cathedral anywhere in this part of the city."

"I don't, either. By its strange structure, it clearly isn't made by man. Not to mention, it's swarming with Lost."

"This cathedral... Is it within your domain?" Echo pondered.

(Y/n) shook her head. "No. It falls within Amalia's domain."

"Hold it," Yakumo grabbed the girl by her arm and pulled her back toward him. "Louis filled me in on a few things about Peace Keepers. You're walking straight into another Peace Keeper's domain, and I know this Amalia won't appreciate it."

The girl's gaze narrowed. "If Amalia does wish to fight, so be it. I want to help you find the source of the blood springs. And if she plans on standing in the way of that, I will stop her with my own hands. Only a Peace Keeper knows how to kill another Peace Keeper."

"Let me guess-you're not gonna tell us," Yakumo sighed.

"Nope," she grinned, her eyes softening as she dug the tip of her halberd into the dirt below. "Now, are you going to let me go so we can keep going?"

The redhead released her arm. "You really like your secrets, don't you? Guess that part of you hasn't changed."

"You may be my boyfriend, but that still doesn't mean I'll share all my secrets with you," she chortled.

"Damn..."

"Now let's get back on track. The cathedral isn't far."

"Whoa," Yakumo gasped in amazement as they emerged from the tunnel. "This definitely wasn't here before the Great Collapse."

The group stood at the entrance to the Cathedral of the Sacred Blood. The three revenants were in awe at the grand, complex structure, admiring it as they walked down a stairwell and toward a mistle. (Y/n), who was already familiar with the sight of the white structure, spotted a silhouette hovering in the sky a good distance away. She knew exactly who it was and glared at them. She didn't want to kill Amalia, but she knew the second she stepped foot in the girl's domain, she signed herself up for a fight to the death with her fellow Peace Keeper.

Echo activated the mistle, Yakumo and Louis standing on either side of her. (Y/n) stood at the top of the stairs located in front of the mistle, staring across the cathedral and spotting an armored female Lost looking around as it stood on guard. She knew how powerful they were and warned the revenants. "Do exceed caution from here on. The Lost here are more powerful than the ones within mine domain."

"We'll be careful," Yakumo reassures her. "But I doubt the Lost will prove to be an obstacle with you around."

"Oh?" (Y/n)'s brow arched upward. "And why's that?"

"You took down that Greater Lost with a single hit. There's no way in hell we'll fall here with you on our side."

"Any Lost is an easy kill if you know where to strike," the (h/c)-haired girl simply stated. "Besides, I'd been dying to kill that damned thing for a while."

"Why didn't you?" Louis asked.

"As a Peace Keeper, my job is to keep the balance. That means only killing Lost who threaten the peace of my dominion. Regardless if the Lost are threats to humans and revenants, they are a part of the balance. Simply put, a dominion is like a balance scale. On one side, you have the Lost. On the other side, you've humans and revenants."

"And in order to keep the balance, each side has to be equal," Echo said.

(Y/n) nodded. "Exactly. The butterfly has attacked its own kind because of its protective nature over its cocoon, but the moment it stepped out of line by targeting a revenant, the scales tipped. I'd been searching for a reason to kill it and finally was granted such. Watching your enemy from a distance proves to be quite valuable when the moment to strike arises hence why I was able to kill it with ease. Just don't expect me to kill every Lost with a single strike, Yakumo."

"You make fighting sound like a chess game," the redhead comments with an impresses grin plastered on his face.

"You were never good at chess," (Y/n) guffawed. She looked over at Louis and Echo, her grin growing. "Has he improved?"

Louis couldn't help but smile in amusement. "He's terrible at chess."

"He keeps asking for a rematch," Echo added.

The Peace Keeper snorted with laughter. "Guess you haven't changed, either, Yakumo."

Hiding his embarrassment, Yakumo rolled his lime green eyes and looked toward the cathedral. "Last time I checked, we were here to find the source of blood spring, not to discuss how terrible I am at chess."

"Well, at least you're aware." (Y/n) lifted her halberd with one hand. "Let's get going, shall we?"

Louis nodded in agreement. "Yes. Let's."

The group walked down the flight of stairs and so began their long, exhausting trek through the cathedral's complex layout. They encountered numerous of dead ends, Lost, and sealed doors. (Y/n) wanted to fly around to get a better view, but she knew Amalia was patrolling the area.

Echo took the lead as they climbed a windy staircase to the upper level of the cathedral. They fought against a stone-crusher, not even breaking a sweat. When it was no longer an obstacle blocking their path, they pushed forward and across a pathway void of railing.

"Careful of where you step," Louis warned. "We wouldn't want anyone to fall."

"I would-" (Y/n)'s eyes suddenly widen as a chill crept down her spine, the feathers on her wings ruffling. Craning her neck, she spotted Amalia flying straight for Yakumo with her sword in hand. Acting quickly, she pushed him out of the way and received the blow directly. A grunt escaped her lips when the Peace Keeper's body slammed against hers, sending her over the side. She flapped her wings when she felt a familiar plummeting sensation in her gut, fighting against Amalia and changing their trajectory.

Instead of falling into a dark abyss, their bodies slammed against the ground when they landed on a pathway on the lower level of the cathedral. Amalia promptly flew toward (Y/n) and pinned her to the ground. She raised her blade and tried to stab the Peace Keeper in the head, but her sword missed its mark when the girl underneath her kicked her in the stomach. With a cry of pain, she flew backward and landed on the ground.

(Y/n) recovered her halberd and pushed herself off the ground with a groan. "Nice to see you, too, Amalia."

"You truly are a moron," Amalia chortled. "The second you stepped in my domain, you broke the first rule of the Peace Keepers. What made you do such an idiotic thing?"

"Like I would tell you," (Y/n) sneered. "You're Mido's lapdog and not to mention-his favorite."

"Me? The favorite?" The white-haired girl snorted with a menacing chuckle. "Oh, far from it. Mido only ever mentions how you were his greatest accomplishment."

"Well, his favorite is no more. My memories have returned and I refuse to work for a man like him."

"Then I'll gladly end your life here and now!" Amalia charged forward, swinging her sword wildly. (Y/n) blocks each blow with her halberd, waiting for an opening to strike. When she found one, she swung her weapon and nicked Amalia in the side. Blood dripped from the girl's hip as she jumped back and away from her, glaring at her opponent and pressing a hand against her injury until it healed a few seconds later. "I forgot Mido taught you himself. A shame his teachings will go to waste."

"What truly is a shame you won't get to witness Mido's downfall," (Y/n) retorts. "Maybe you will regain your memories once the man who stole them are dead, but you won't live to know due to how blinded you are by your own loyalty."

"You little-ah!" Amalia suddenly screeched out in pain. Looking down, she saw the tip of a blade protruding from her chest. Blood trailed down the curved blade before dripping to the ground. Anger flashed in the girl's eyes as the weapon was ripped from her body and she stumbled forward. Spinning on her heels, she glared at the person who stabbed her as the wound mended itself within seconds. "You damned revenant! I'll kill you!"

"I'd like to see you try," Yakumo hissed. He hid his shock when his attack didn't kill her behind his own anger.

"Yakumo, don't!" (Y/n) shouted. Seeing as he was Amalia's new target, she used one of her gifts to search the Peace Keeper's body for the crystal. She located it in the girl's lower back and targeted it. Being distracted by the revenant provided her with the opening she needed to kill Amalia and didn't hesitate to take it. Raising her halberd, she dashed toward the Peace Keeper and aimed her weapon at the crystal hidden inside the girl's body. With a powerful thrust, (Y/n) impaled Amalia in the lower back. She heard the crystal shatter as her halberd plunged into the Peace Keeper's body.

Amalia screamed at the top of her lungs. Blood poured from her lower back when (Y/n) yanked her halberd out of her flesh. With ragged movements, the white-haired girl turned to face her fellow Peace Keeper. "M-Mido will know of th-this... Traitor..." Her body turned to crystal before shattering to pieces. The crimson shards ricocheted outward before vanishing into thin air.

"At least she is no longer a threat," (Y/n) sighed, closing her eyes and reclining her head back.

Yakumo walked up to her without a scratch on him. "You okay?"

The (h/c)-haired girl opened her eyes and lowered her head. "Physically, yes. Mentally, no..." She stared and the pool of blood in front of her, watching as it slowly crystallized and evaporated. "I didn't want to kill her, but...she left me no choice."

"It was either you or her," Yakumo said. "Personally, I'm glad it was her and not you. What did you do, anyway?"

"Each Peace Keeper has a crystal embedded in their body. The location is different for each Peace Keeper. If the crystal shatters, the Peace Keeper dies. Basically, the crystal is like the BOR parasite found within revenants."

"Where's yours? Or do you even know?" Yakumo question out of pure curiosity.

"Each Peace Keeper knows where their crystal is so they know which part of their body to protect the most. The only other person who knows where the Peace Keepers' crystals are is the one who implanted them in our bodies-Mido. Mine is located in the back of my neck. It's in a location easier to protect than my back, arm, or leg."

"And Amalia's crystal was located in her lower back. That's why she survived being stabbed directly in the chest..." Yakumo pieced together the puzzle. "How'd you know where her crystal was?"

"Used one of my gifts to locate it. You could say it was an unfair fight," (Y/n) shrugged her shoulders. She lifted her hand, brushing her fingertips against the back of her neck. She could feel the scar from where Mido sliced her flesh open to implant the crystal and remembered the extreme pain from the procedure. "Agreeing to become a Peace Keeper was the most moronic decision I've made..."

Her wings drooped, signaling to Yakumo of her depressed mood. He swung an arm around her shoulders, cautious as to not crumple her wing when he pulled her into his side. He had an urge to kiss her, but his purifier mask proved to be an obstacle. All he could settle for was leaning his head against hers. "You're still alive, aren't you? I know that's all I could ask for. When I woke up after becoming a revenant and no one knew where you were, I only could think of the worst. Seeing you in the park ruins that day brought me so much relief. You had no idea who I was at the time, but I was just happy to see you were alive."

(Y/n) leaned into his warmth, his body supporting her weight. "Do you realize how difficult it was for me to not pounce on you after I regained my memory?"

"Do you realize how difficult it was for me to not pounce on you when I saw you in the park ruins?" Yakumo quipped, grinning under his mask. "But when you kissed me in the dried-up trenches, let's just say that didn't help my resolve to keep my hands to myself."

Before (Y/n) could respond, they were interrupted when a deep chuckled echoed around them. The couple quickly grabbed their weapons and glared at the man standing not too far from them. "Mido..." The Peace Keeper growled, glaring sharply at the man.

"It seems one of my precious doves has escaped her cage," Mido chuckled. His entire face was obscured by a metal mask. The only part they could see was his right eye glowing menacingly through the darkness of one of the eye holes while the other remained pitch black. "I'm afraid I will have to clip your wings, (Y/n). Such a shame, indeed. Losing you will be devastating."

Blinded by anger, Yakumo grabs Oni Bane and charges forward with a battlecry. In the blink of an eye, Mido revealed his two-handed sword-Judgement Edge. He held the blade in front of him, blocking the redhead's attack. He overpowered the revenant and shoved him backward. Yakumo grunted as his body slammed against the ground and his grip on his blade slipped. The wind was knocked from his lungs as he landed on his stomach.

Mido closed the distance before (Y/n) could attack and stabbed his blade through Yakumo's lower back, pinning him to the ground. "I do enjoy an audience when I perform my work," he confesses, his grin concealed. "Do enjoy the show."

"Bastard...!" Yakumo snarled through gritted teeth. He tried to free himself from the weapon, but he couldn't get a proper grip on it due to it being plunged into his lower back.

(Y/n) yelled as she rushed at Mido. She swung her halberd, but Mido disappeared into a puff of scarlet smoke. Startled, she gasped and stared at the spot he once stood.

Before she could spin on her heels and search the area for where the enemy went, he manifested behind her with Yakumo's blade in hand. With his other hand, he grabbed her by the throat the second she was facing him. He slammed her body against the ground, squeezing her throat as he straddled her body. A sickening grin, which was hidden under his mask, spread across his face as he found joy in watching her struggle against him. "Now, now, my dear. Struggling will only bring more suffering." He tore his eyes away from her and admired Oni Bane. "What a wondrous weapon. Its blade will be perfect for what I've in store for you, (Y/n)."

The Peace Keeper flapped her wings frantically in hopes it would be enough force to push him off her. When she thought she had an advantage against Mido, an excruciating pain washed over her entire body. A bloodcurdling scream escaped her throat when his hand was lifted from around her neck. Tears cascaded down her cheeks, turning her head weakly and staring at her now chopped off wing. Blood dripped from the stub where her wing was once attached. All she could hear was Mido's maniacal chuckling and Yakumo's angry shouts.

When (Y/n) thought the situation couldn't get worse, Mido lopped off her other wing. Overwhelmed by the pain from her missing wings, she couldn't even scream. More tears trailed down her face as her head lulled to the side, her (e/c) eyes locking with Yakumo's lime green ones. She could see the pure terror and anger in them.

"Now, for the finale," Mido proclaimed, going unheard by (Y/n). "To be killed by the blade belonging to the man you love oh-so dearly. A poetic death, I must say. And one befitting your betrayal, my dear. But there are others who can take your place. Farewell, my creation." With a quick strike, he sliced through her neck and severed her head, successfully shattering the crystal located in the back of her neck.

Yakumo couldn't believe what was unfolding in front of him. His eyes widen in horror as he watched Mido decapitate the one person he loved and cherished with his own weapon. He only reunited with her a few days ago and now, she was gone forever. His entire being went numb as (Y/n)'s body morphed into crystal and shattered underneath Mido. He wanted nothing more to kill the man, but he couldn't budge an inch from the amount of shock and sorrow that was drowning him.

"My work here is done," Mido simply said before tossing Oni Bane aside, yanking his own blade from Yakumo's back, and disappearing without a trace.

No longer pinned to the ground, Yakumo still refused to budge. He didn't even move when Echo and Louis found him. All he could stare at was the spot where (Y/n) once lied and the crystalized blood puddles that were left behind. His friends tried to get answers from him as they helped him regenerate from his wound, but they couldn't get any answers out of him.

Louis and Echo helped Yakumo to his feet. He pushed them off of him as he dragged his body over to the blood that was beginning to evaporate. He fell to his knees, fists clenched tightly as he released a scream of anger and sorrow. His slammed his fists into the ground, his back hunched as tears came pouring from his eyes. His shoulders shook as he cursed Mido repeatedly in his mind. He vowed revenge against the man and would avenge (Y/n). Regardless of his anger, he felt utterly lost and alone in this world no matter how close his friends stood next to him.
