Les martins-pêcheurs défendent un territoire de chasse individuel au bord de l'eau.
Ils se penchent sur des branches surplombant la surface pour y guetter leur proies.
Dès que l'oiseau aperçoit un petit poisson ou un insecte, il plonge tête la première et capture sa proie à l'aide de son bec.
Puis il la rapporte sur son perchoir et, avant de l'avaler, la tue en la frappant contre une branche.
Pour nicher, il creuse dans la rive sablonneuse une galerie terminée par une chambre de nidification qu'il laisse nue.
