Adelbert Schmidt, renowned German scientist and technologist; and is the Founder and CEO of Schmidt weapons industry and Knights' Watch PMC and Security. 13 years ago, his wife and 90 days old son died when she was shopping and the mall was attacked by a villain. The loss sent him into depression which got worse to the point that he isolated himself in his lab for 3 years. After many therapy sessions, he finally back to his former self, well mostly. 2 years later he founded Knights' Watch, a PMC whose sole purpose was to help those in need. The PMC had 3 main principles

What makes Knights' Watch stand out from other PMC(s) was that even quirkless people were allowed to join with the one condition being they must be very fit physically. 1 year later, the PMC was being praised for its work in war zones. Many volatile and vulnerable countries even started to acknowledge Knight's Watch as a peace keeping group rather than a group of mercenaries. This made Schmidt very happy and also made him many enemies. But, his happiness was short lived as 1 year later, he was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. He had lost all hope and decided that he would spend the remaining days of his life in the country and city where he first met his wife. That's where he meets Izuku.
