《Deception (Book #1) ✅》~46: You Have Choices~

A few days had passed, Caleb had made a few calls to the alphas of Midnight Shadow pack and we spent nearly a week there trying to find any information about banshee's that we could. It was long tedious work that I knew Caleb could have cared less in doing but he put his own feels aside and stayed up late with me to research. He was helpful, although, he would sporadically break up my intense studying for little kisses and tantalizing intimate touching.
"Are you sure this many cups of coffee is... healthy?" I listened to a new male voice as I peered over the large old book I held in my hands.
A younger gentleman was approaching us and I didn't miss the aura of arrogance with every step he took. He couldn't have been older than me but his green eyes pierced my own and his dark hair and soaring height had me sinking into my chair. On the other hand Caleb sat up to greet him his own aura of dominance willing me with enough strength to sit tall in my chair.
"Hey Daniel how's it been?" Caleb asked grabbing Daniel's hand and bringing him in for a half hug.
"Same old, same old. My dad is still giving me a hard time about handing off all the duties, says I'm still inexperienced. He doesn't know what he's talking about I swear." I was put off with the ease at which he spoke down about his father. Did this kid have any respect? Or was this how most Alphas were like?
Pulling away from Daniel Caleb chuckled. "All in good time Daniel. Trust me there's no rush I regret rejecting the role, now I'm teach myself a lot. Don't take your old man's advice and guidance for granted." As I listened to Caleb speak about being an alpha I didn't miss the fact that he was reflecting on himself, for a split second I saw utter vulnerability. Something about his late father and being his successor sat heavy on his shoulders and I wanted to press on the subject more but right now wasn't the time.
I made a mental note to ask him later on.
"The old man thinks I'm still a kid. I'm stronger than him already I don't think he realizes that if I really wanted to I could challenge him now for alpha." The confidence at which Daniel spoke had me unsure of his intentions.
If this nineteen year old was willing to challenge his dad to be alpha all because he couldn't be patience and be taught, I wasn't sure there was much that would stop him from doing harm if he deemed me or anyone as a threat. The only thing I guess stopping him was the fact that he at the very least respected Caleb enough not to do anything rash around me.
Caleb must have picked up on my sudden uneasiness with Daniel's presence as he patted the teen on the shoulder walking with him out of the archives and out of ear shoot.
Hesitating at first I watched as the two of them disappeared through another set of doors. The eerie silence of the archives and the musty smell of the old leather bound books gave me a nostalgic feeling, back when I would sneak off into the basement of the university library and browse original text of settlers and indigenous people.
My eyes slowly skimmed over the old text of the book I had found. It's thick brittle pages felt dusty on my finger tips as I hoped to find any valuable information.

"Evelyn."
I jumped at the soft whisper that came from behind me. Darting out of my seat I turned around assuming that I would come face to face with a person, there was no one. I looked back in the direction Caleb had just gone to leave minutes ago but before I could act on leaving another whisper was heard.
"Evelyn don't be frightened. It is only I, Sorcha."
My heart dropped while I scanned the room for the banshee that now had an obsession with me. I wanted nothing more than to shout for Caleb to come back but my tongue felt stuck to the roof of my mouth as I continued to look around.
"W-where are you? W-what do you want?" A thick blanket of silence settled in the heart of the archives sending me deeper into distress. Fighting the urge to run I made myself focus up and dig for the courage to raise my voice. "You know it was real nice of you to just leave me. You hardly explained anything."
Suddenly an apparition mist-like fog appeared in front of me and I could just barely make out the short figure of Sorcha. Her wispy white hair floated gracefully behind her.
"You have much to learn child." Her voice was still hardly over a whisper. "There will soon be a major turn in your life's events. You must tread lightly if you want to keep those you care about safe."
I furrowed my eyebrows together finding her words cryptic and ambiguous.
Squinting my eyes in hopes of making out more details of her face I frowned when I could only make out her silhouette. Sorcha reached out to me and her misty hand felt light and cold against my wrist. I instantly jerked back finding her presence overwhelming and it didn't help that my frustration at being thrown back into my life with no explanation had me wanting to scream every swear word in the dictionary.
"Everyone I know and care about is safe and sound."
With a heavy sigh Sorcha floated back from me, sounding sorrowful and remorseful, but for what reason? Nothing had happened to earn myself an apology or pity.
"For now they are fine but it won't always be like this. You..." She sighed again searching for the right words to say. "You have choices remember that."
The sound of a chuckle interrupted our conversation; I intended to continue it but Sorcha floated away from me ducking behind one of the massive book shelves. Quickly, I picked up my steps desperate to get the answers I have been wanting, needing.
"No you can't leave!" I shouted trying to grab hold of her arm but my hands went through her misty body.
"Shh child! You have choices remember that you must. What you ultimately decide will reflect in either consequences or rewards." She levitated higher and out of my reach, not like I could grab her anyways.
Tears pricked my eyes as I willed myself to keep from sobbing out right. "I have so many questions."
"All in good time dear." She dissipated away leaving nothing behind but one final whisper. "All in good time."
A sob croaked out from the back of my throat at I stared at the spot she once was. I would have full blown cried had it not been for the voice that came from behind me.
"Who are you talking to?"
I spun around to face Caleb. He had a smile on his perfect face but it faded away once he saw the despair on my face. Hiding away my heartache I swallowed the pain that was building up in my chest and instead replaced it with frustration. I was no closer to understand who I was then I was ten minutes ago.

A warm calloused palm cupped my cheek bring me out of my thoughts. Piercing blue eyes welcomed me with open concern and affection.
"What's wrong?" He asked scanning over time for anything that may answer his question. I was pretty sure he already knew I wasn't about to answer anything that he asked.
Water pooled in my eyes but I was quick to blink it away. There was no point at being emotional, it wouldn't change anything and I didn't want pity, I wanted normalcy; something I knew that would never happen.
"Nothing. I'm fine." I stepped around him but only got so far before his hand wrapped around my wrist stopping me in my tracks. "Ca-"
"I don't like liars. How am I supposed to help you if you don't ever tell me what's wrong?" His voice sounded caring but his cool and collected face told me how much he really meant his words. He was being completely serious.
I couldn't bother myself to take his stature into consideration however as I rolled my eyes and yanked my wrist from his hand. I shouldn't have been this cold but I was frustrated and overwhelmed and unfortunately Caleb was the one that would get the brunt of my anger.
"It doesn't matter, you can't change anything. Nobody can!" I turned around again my ears feel red and heated from my flaming temper.
Caleb wasn't having any of it though since he tugged my waist and twirling me around to be pressed chest to chest. My hands instinctually moved to push against his chest and remove myself from him but he was quick to capture both of my wrists with one hand rendering me immobile.
With skillful calmness and tenderness he kept me securely to him leaving me no option than to huff out in irritation. "You done?"
I kept my eyes down casted to the concrete floor finding it irritating that I couldn't remove myself. Once I relaxed further into his hold Caleb loosened his grip but he did not remove it reminding me, he was very much still there.
"Now, that you've calmed down, you are going to look at me and you are going to tell me what is wrong." His dominate voice both oddly soothing made it hard for me to fight against it, it was like it forced me to listen and obey him. Though his tone commanded obedience it did not, however, leave me with no way to reject it. In all honesty I didn't want to reject it; in fact he was forcing me to face my problems instead of suppressing it all.
I inched my eyes slowly up his body, starting from where he held my hands to his chest. Once my eyes reached his face I instantly wanted to tear my eyes from his I felt like I was giving him the satisfaction he wanted but I knew better, he only cared, nothing more.
"Do you talk to everyone like this?" I spewed out another question to change the topic I watched as Caleb's eyes darkened.
"Does it matter?" He shot back. The sudden coldness to his tone had my shivering in my spot he sounded so... intimidating, as if the question I asked had an obvious answer.
Pursing my lips I flicked my gaze from one eye to the other. "You can't pressure people to do what you want when you want. That's not... normal, nor is it right."
"Don't act like you're going to change the topic with out me noticing. You aren't slick." He pointed out, making me swallow a lump at the back of my throat. "Now I won't ask again. Why were you upset?"
My heartbeat was hard against my rib cage as I stared deep into blue orbs. Where had this change in attitude come from? Caleb was losing his patience quickly as I jumped around his questions. He wasn't being cool and collected playing my game of hopscotch to avoid his questions and concerns. He was being direct and I wasn't sure how I was supposed to react to it all.
Was I supposed to bend to his ever question answering it without blinking an eye? Of course not, I was never that easily pushed over, hence why I ended up with bruises from Roy. I could never quite hold my tongue when my temper was fuming at the seams.
"Does it matter? It's in the past and done. Nothing can be done to change anything in the past." My monotone voice left no room for interpretation as I pushed against his chest begging for some sort of distance to level out my thoughts and emotions. I was beyond overwhelmed.
Caleb gently moved the hand that held my wrists to the side of my lips pulling softly on my bottom lip. The simple movement sent butterflies exploding in my stomach covering over my anger with its wings. How could one person make me feel so... important, like I were the most important person in the world.
"Eve, I'm trying to help, I want to help, please just tell me what happened."
His voice was leveled and soothing making me buzz with an underlying desire to cave in and let him in. What harm could it do? I should be able to tell him anything, right?
"The Banshee that I met before came back." Once the words left my lips I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders. I could finally breath.
"What did she say?"
I groaned remember how little I actually got from her brief moment there in the archives. How could she just leave me with more questions than answers? I thought she was supposed to train me or teach me. I felt more abandoned than before.
"Practically nothing!" I exclaimed exasperated from all the shreds of missing details and information. I was no closer to understand what I was than I was a week ago. It felt useless to continue.
The silence in the room became loud as I registered that Caleb hadn't said a word after my outburst. Gazing up I locked eyes with his but this time it wasn't his piercing blue eyes that captured my attention, it was the smirk on his lips.
"I'm so glad my suffering brings you joy." I retorted.
He chuckled. "That's not why I'm smiling. I think it cute how upset you get. It's like looking at a kitten hiss, it's adorable."
Fighting my own smile I jerked away from him smacking his chest in annoyance.
"I'm serious." I muttered walking back to the table of stacked old books.
"So am I."
I reached to pick up the book I was reading but I didn't even read a sentence before it was snatched from my hands. "Hey! What are you-"
"We have to go." Caleb stated as if it were obvious. Had I missed something?
"But I thought we were staying here for the next couple days." I helped him pile up the books in a bag but I was enthusiastic about it.
"Change of plans."
"What are talking about I wanted to stay... here." I pleaded hoping he'd give in but it was to no avail.
"Loz found a lead on the Fantom. I have him writing up a plan as we speak. I'm going to need your help to catch this son of a bitch." The disgust he had for this person was evident before my eyes as his irises grew dark as the night sky. I instinctually gulped still uneasy by his primal behavior. Catching on to my timid posture Caleb shook his head and reopened his eyes to reveal his blue orbs. "Sorry." He coughed throwing the bag of books over his shoulder.
He reached his hand out to me and I hesitated just a moment though, before I reminded myself he meant no harm. Sure I trusted him for the most part but I was still put on edge whenever he was in the midst of battle between animal and man. Placing my hand in his I let him lead the way.

The long drive back to the estate was mostly silent to my relief. I wasn't up for much talking, not after Sorcha popped up. My stomach however knotted the closer we got to the pack house as I readied myself for this plan Caleb mentioned to me.
The moment we pulled up the drive way Alex and Taylor were already waiting outside for us. Both of them were quick to help carry the different bags of books inside, all the while I stayed snug to Caleb's side as we entered the mansion.
"Everything is going to be okay." He whispered sensing my growing tension.
He opened the door to the spare room. The room had several chairs in rows and white boards that lined the two of the four walls. There were maps and pictures stuck to the boards with writing splashed around it giving the intricate display a crazed look. Was there a rhyme or reason to this all or was this just one big collage?
I sat down on one of the chairs in the first row. Lawerence was flipping through a binder while I caught quick glances from Naní and Taylor. My nerves were wrecked as I awaited for what was to come next. Naní and Taylor had sat on either side of me while Alex sat at the very back of the room with his feet propped up on the chair in front of him. Yes
"Finally!" Lawerence shouted in delight when he finally found what he was looking for. When he looked up at all of us he paused for a moment in a small greeting like way. His eyes furrowed however in confusion. "Where's Nora?"
Taylor instantly scoffed at the mention of her name I didn't miss her rolling her eyes either. Lawerence narrowed his eyes at his mate giving her a warning look before speaking again.
"Didn't you inform her about this meeting?" Lawerence looked to Caleb for an answer.
Caleb had been leaning against the wall with his arms crosses when Lawerence asked the question. He didn't seem bothered by his sisters lack of presence and I remembered back to the fact that had his doubts about her. I had wanted to ask him about it but I was afraid to ask him. Originally I thought he had shared his doubts with his friends but I was wrong about that as Lawerence clearly expect Nora to show.
"No." Caleb answered.
Lawerence shook his head in shock as he turned to face his alpha. "She should be here. We need all the help-"
"She doesn't need to be here she has enough to do." Was all that Caleb mentioned leaving his friend further confused. As I watched Lawerence's face contorted into frustration he gave Caleb as serious glare to which Caleb responded with a menacing growl that left everyone stiff as a board; even Lawerence had straighten up. "The less people involved the better. I'm already risking a lot bringing Eve into all this."
The room was dead quiet as we all stared in different directions, feeling the tension between them grow with every second, though Lawerence dropped the topic. There was an awkward feeling that set in the room and I could tell that Alex, Taylor and Naní were all put on edgy from it.
"Continue." Caleb ordered pushing off the wall and moving to the desk that Lawerence had spaced out papers and pictures.
Lawerence cleared his throat willing himself to push his angry away and move on with the meeting. "Druscilla gave us these pictures a couple weeks ago and I've had a few of the scoots keep tabs on these three individuals." He pointed at the picture on the table but from where I was sat I couldn't see a thing.
"May I?" I asked pointing at the photo. Both Caleb and Lawerence nodded. that was all I got up and looked at the various photos, all of them where in a club setting with bright lights flashing and pockets of dark shadows in corners. How could they even get solid pictures of these people?
As I picked up one of the photos I took in one of the girls appearances. She had jet black hair and tattoos that trailed up from her hands to her neck. There wasn't a section of her skin that wasn't covered in ink.
"So these are the people hunting me?" My voice was barely a whisper but they all could hear me.
"Yes, her name is Nayla. We've discovered she's a werewolf gone rogue she hunts down bounties as a career." Lawerence explained. He said it with disgust which did nothing to steady my racing pulse. "These are the other two that we believe to be looking for you too. These two, however, we think are working directly with the fantom themselves like servants."
"If the fantom already has servants then why is this woman involved?" Taylor wondered looking at the photos as well. I hadn't noticed she had even moved to look, I was too indulged with memorizing the numerous tattoos on the bounty hunters arms to bother myself with anything else around me.
"Money." Naní grumbled with a sense of knowing like it was something obvious to her. "Everything revolves around money."
"Which is why we are going to use that to our advantage. We are going to bait her in taking Eve, and ambush her for answers." Lawerence explained.
I felt like time had froze as my blood turned cold with dread. I was going to bait a werewolf into taking me. Bile had rose in my throat and it took everything to swallow it down my eyes darted to Caleb's. Was he okay with this? He had to have been since he wasn't objecting to it.
Sensing my fear Caleb spoke up. "You won't be alone. We all will be there, I'll be there."
Taylor put her hand on my shoulder and offered me a soft smile. "Everything will be okay. We can finally catch this little fucker."

He casually walked towards the office, not even taking a glance around him. My heart began to slow down when he disappeared into his room. Then the door closed.
