《Deception (Book #1) ✅》~45: Out Smart Us~

"Be careful I don't want you cutting yourself." This had to have been the millionth time I heard Caleb warn me as we worked together to clean the place up.

It was my idea to clean up the pack house since he decided to throw stuff around in a fit of rage earlier. Caleb explained to me that their were members of the pack that had cleaning duties and that him and I shouldn't be the ones to clean it up. I was quick to shut that down as this catastrophe of a mess was his work and he was going to clean up after himself.

"I'm okay." I rolled my eyes dropping a few shards of glass in a bucket. "If you weren't so short tempered I wouldn't be on my hands and knees cleaning up after you."

"I mean I don't mind you on your hands and knees." I looked up to catch him raising a cocky eyebrow at me. The man just couldn't help his dirty mind.

"Focus Caleb. You still have to find a way to carry the love seat you snapped in half outside." Pointing at the awkwardly angled love seat I retorted my reply.

Caleb was standing in front of me while we spoke but at that moment he bent down to my level placing a finger under my chin in a loving manner.

"Are you ordering me around? A semi-human ordering an alpha of a pack around?" Though his questions were serious he asked them playfully. I was about to break into a laugh but the mention of being semi-human left my stomach in a knot.

Dropping the last big piece of glass in the bucket I stood up rolling my lips uneasy still about my new self. Caleb noticed my sudden change in demeanor. In an attempt to comfort me he pulled me to his chest combing his hand through my hair.

"Have you found anything new from the library?" He asked resting his chin on the top of my head. I found his embrace to sooth the chaos in my mind.

Shaking my head in reply I looked up at him. His crystal blue eyes looked sad as they fell on my face. I was almost certain I looked frightened and uncertain, how could I not? I had become a supernatural without much a choice and thrown into an environment that had me walking on eggshells. Sure things are calmer now but it was only a matter of time before something was bound to happen.

"It's alright. We'll figure this out together. I think I might know someone who may help us."

"Who?"

"Her name is Willow. She's the witch that made your necklace." As he explained I couldn't help but bite my lip nervously. Did I want to rely on another person with my sensitive information? I didn't know the girl and I had never met a witch before. It all sounded like something straight out of hocus pocus.

When Caleb noticed my apprehension he spoke up. "She's a long time family friend. She's someone I trust and someone you can trust too."

I scoffed in response. "I'm not too sure about that. It's taking me a long time to trust you."

I half expected Caleb to push on the subject further but he left his persuasive comments behind and instead offered understanding. "That's okay, move at your own pace. It was wrong of me to assume you'd be willing to trust her."

A sudden sense of guilt came over me as I realized I had so openly rejected Caleb's eager help. I subconsciously slapped myself for being so rude.

"No you're right I should be more open-minded to help. I can't shy away from every supernatural forever." I paused recalling the last encounter I had in the forest that nearly costed my life. Looking back up to Caleb I gave him my best hopeful face. "If you trust her then I trust her. When can we meet?"

Sweat coated my temple as I threw another punch in Caleb's direction. I was aiming for his upper abdomen but he was quick to effortlessly catch my flying fist. This was a never ending cycle for the past twenty minutes. I'd throw endless punches and Caleb would so effortlessly catch each and everyone of them. I don't even think he broke a sweat.

"Try again and focus." He reminded me as my patience to land a single punch was diminishing.

Groaning in frustration I retorted, "Don't you think I've been doing that?"

He chuckled to himself as I yelled out again in an ill effort to gather strength to throw another punch. Once more he skillfully maneuvered around my punch it came natural for him and I was growing envious.

He sighed and the simple sound sent hopelessness down my spine. It was no use why'd I even ask him to train me it wasn't like me feeble body would even stand a chance against a werewolf.

"You can't go at us full speed and straight on. We are predators Eve. You need to think of a better approach, a different and more deceptive approach." Huffing in annoyance I soon unraveled the padded gloves from my hands and tossed them on the gym floor.

"It's no use. I'm not quick enough or strong enough."

Caleb opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted when I heard a male voice come from behind me.

"You don't have to be as quick as us or as strong," I recognized the male voice instantly and a small smile came on my face as I turned to see Alex approaching us. "You have to out smart us."

I furrowed my eyebrows together. "And how am I supposed to do that? It's not like you guys are stupid."

"I beg to differ." I heard Caleb joke looking over at Alex and giving him a mischievous grin. Caleb had brought it upon himself to stand just inches behind me now. Ever since last night he couldn't seem to keep his hands off me or stay away for very long. Not that I minded it.

"I hope you aren't trying to call me out, because if I remember correctly to when we were teens, someone thought it was an amazing idea to pool hop in Mr.Franklin's pool while drunk." Alex paused for a moment tapping his finger on his chin and looking off into the distance as if imagining the scene. "I also remember pretty vividly too that that same person set off the motion detectors setting off the lights all because he was too drunk to sit still for very long."

I started chuckling as I looked next to me to see a less than amused Caleb. Alex didn't seem to care though as he carried on his story.

"And do you know what the best part was?" Alex teasingly taunted.

"I'm warning you Alex. Drop it or your helping Nora train the pups." Caleb threatened Alex merely shrugged.

"You say that as if I don't like kids. As I was saying the best part Eve was that stupid," Caleb growled. "-young teen with a bright and outgoing future ahead of them, tried to jump the fence and got his swim trucks stuck on the fence. Poor guy gave himself the most painful wedge I'd ever seen. Too bad his friend left him to watch Mr.Franklin free his trunks."

By the end of the story I was nearly in tears. Caleb was full on glaring at Alex but like I mentioned before Alex didn't seem to care.

"No way that happened." I laughed looking over at Caleb. "Is this true or does Alex have an overactive imagination?"

"That's not how it happened." He groaned out still throwing daggers in Alex's direction. "What are you doing here anyways Alex?" Caleb asked the question with aggression that would have made anyone cower in a corner, but not Alex, nope he stood there proud and mischievous as always. I was beginning to think either Alex enjoyed playing with fire or he simply trusted Caleb that much that he wouldn't snap at him.

Alex rolled up his sleeves picking up a wooden shaped dagger that was dropped on the floor minutes ago. Caleb opted out of using it seeing it as I could barely throw a punch right.

"You want her to learn how to fight and defend herself right?" Alex's sensible tone should have eased Caleb's irritation but it only seemed to heighten it.

"Are you saying that I'm not doing a well enough job?" The chide sound in my mate's voice had me squirming in my shoes.

Alex shrugged his shoulder as he played with the full point of the dagger. "I just think that she should learn how to defend herself from someone who wasn't always a wolf." Peering back at us he gave Caleb a matter-of-fact face before winking playfully at me.

Caleb noticed giving him a warning growl and taking a step forward to close the distance between them. I grabbed hold of his arm to stop him allowing the electrifying tingles to cool off his temperament. I was relieved to see his shoulders drop a little with the tension slowly diminishing from his muscles.

"It wouldn't hurt to listen to what Alex has to offer." I told Caleb tugging on his arm once more to bring his attention back to me. His eyes instantly softened when they landed on mine. "He does have a point."

Shaking his head with a reluctant sigh Caleb moved aside sitting himself on one of the weight benches to watch. With his sudden distance between us I felt bare with out his body heat.

"Come here Caleb I need you to be apart of this." Alex explained beckoning Caleb with his finger. Caleb raised an eyebrow as he stood up.

"For what? You said you could handle training her why do you need me?" He asked condescendingly as he approached us. It was clear as day that Caleb was less than thrilled with the idea that Alex could possibly be a better choice to learn human combatant skills from.

"Because I don't think you want me to shift and hover over her like she needs. I'm pretty sure your wolf would just about kill me if I do that. So, as I was saying shift and approach her like you would anyone else if they were attacking you."

My heart suddenly sank. I knew that Caleb wouldn't harm me but I didn't know if I was ready to stand in front of a beast that had the urge to descend on its prey. I could tell Caleb didn't feel comfortable either as his eyes widened.

"I'm not doing that."

"You have to. How else am I supposed to show her a wolf's weakness if she isn't tested in this dangerous scenario?" Alex had a point but my stomach just continue to churn as I readied myself for this scene to unfold. Groaning again Caleb looked at him. "I mean I could be the one-"

"Absolutely not!" With that being said Caleb pulled his t-shirt off his body and his sweatpants off his legs. He moved to stand in front of me winking first before crouching and allowing the deafening crunching of his bones to bounce off the empty gym walls.

Human Caleb was gone and replaced was a blue eyed golden blonde wolf that's head reached my chest. My nerves climbed an extra hundred feet before a ripple of calmness washed away my nervousness. That wasn't my calmness, no it was his and I could somehow feel it not that I was complaining.

I had momentarily gotten lost in his deep blue eyes that I hadn't noticed Alex talking until his sly comment broke my concentration.

"You guys can go back to fucking after this I swear I'll leave y'all alone." He scrunched his nose up in disgust. "Trust me I don't wanna see or hear you two."

Punching Alex embarrassed by his comment he hissed rubbing the spot before moving me to the side and standing in front of Caleb. "Now watch and learn, take notes if you have to. Caleb is going to act like a Were that is hunting a human down they'll more often than not be a wolf. When we are wolves we are stronger, senses higher, pace faster, just know now that getting away from a wolf is damn near impossible, we don't tire easily and we have a drive to hunt. Your best option isn't to hide its to stand your ground."

I listened closely as I watch Alex rotate his wrist that held the dagger. His eyes were trained on Caleb's every move watching and reading the Wolf's intentions as they circled together. He made it his goal to keep Caleb in front of him regardless of the equipment that lied around.

Before I could fully blink Caleb lunged at him knocking Alex down making him hit his head on the gym mat in the process. Alex cussed still holding the dagger in a death grip but his eyes fogged over a brief moment before they returned back to normal. Caleb dropped his head to one side of Alex's neck, his teeth were baring as he licked them. He looked terrifying I couldn't imagine going up against a wolf not when they looked so... so primal. I was helpless.

Alex waved at me to catch my attention and my eyes immediately left the menacing wolf that I called my mate. "So first things first Eve more often than not a Were was trained to knock down their prey in this instance that's you." I swallowed a lump in my throat forcing myself to remain focus and not have a panic attack. I nodded to reply letting him know I was listening and that he could continue with this less than soothing image. "Once your on the ground make sure you alway roll to your back. Never put your back to a Were, that makes you an easy kill. Now that you're laying on your back the next step is probably the most important step don't try to crawl away from them, grab a hold of their neck as if your giving them a big warm hug."

The shock that flashed upon my face was not easy to fight off it was plastered there for all to see. "Umm, what? Won't they just bite me?"

"Not if you move fast. Look I'll show you." Alex nodded to Caleb who still towered over him, as if it were second nature Alex sprung up as if he were sitting up, wrapping his arms securely around Caleb's neck. Caleb acted as though he were the enemy as he tried to find a spot to grab Alex but he couldn't. Alex had secured himself under his head in a position that left Caleb with no way of attacking him.

I was left bewildered as Alex chuckled more than amused at how badly Caleb was now trying to get a hold of him. "I'm not such a bad teacher now am I?" Alex wasn't talking to me as he wrapped his legs around Caleb's stomach.

"Okay next step if you have a weapon use it. Hold onto their neck with one arm and use your free arm to attack their sides. It's our weakest point besides our necks. Hit them, stab them, anything, right into their ribs, but be sure to hold on, one hard shake and you could fall off them." As Alex pretended he had a real dagger he acted as if he were stabbing the side of Caleb's torso. "Don't let go of them until your absolutely sure they are dead or someone comes to help."

At that Alex dropped himself off of Caleb and rolled out from under him. "See, easy!"

"Uh-Uh," I blinked my eyes focused on Caleb as he backed away catching his sweats that Alex threw at him and walking around on of the large weight machines. I heard the unmistakable sound of bone crushing and moments after watched Caleb in all his glory walk around the machine. His chiseled chest was on clear display and I found myself hitting my lip to keep from drooling.

"You forgot one thing Alex, she's human." Caleb pointed out.

"Human-ish" I corrected.

Alex looked between us confused and I mentally slapped myself as it dawned on me that we hadn't told many people about the change. Taylor and Caleb were the only two to know, I was still struggling to find the perfect time to drop such information on everyone. Hell, I hadn't even met everyone in the pack, Caleb was still planning some sort of gathering for that introduction.

When Alex's puzzled eyes caught mine I felt obligated to tell him my new found... supernatural self, though I hadn't asked for this.

"I- we," I corrected myself when I looked to Caleb for some reassurance. "-don't know much about who or what I really am. All I know is what I was told."

"Which is..." Alex let the question hang in the air with all the weight in the world, geez I wish everyone would stop asking questions I barely knew the answers to.

"I'm a banshee."

The room became so silent that the slightest noise that breathing caused, sounded as if it were through a loud speaker. When Alex allowed the news to sink in he cleared his throat awkwardly. "And here I thought you'd be something cool." He muttered unimpressed.

"I beg your pardon." I said offended by his comment. Was I supposed to be something impressive?

He walked back towards us handing me the dagger as he passed. "Eh, all banshees do are scream and levitate."

"How do you know this?" Caleb asked finding the information interesting and he was beyond perplexed that Alex was the one holding this kind of information.

With a loud scoff Alex turned to us rolling his eyes. "I may be the worst person to take anything seriously but I'm not stupid. I do like to read."

This time Caleb bursted out laughing. "Dude, since when did you pick up a book and actually read it?"

"Fuck off! This is exactly why I don't tell you or Loz what I do with my free time. You both think I'm dumb or something."

"Honestly I thought you just jacked off on your free time." Caleb shot back humor lighting up his eyes. I had to stifle a laugh when Alex's face turned red with anger.

"Whatever bro, I'm not talking to you anymore I'm talking to Eve." Giving Caleb one last glare he turned to me and his eyes instantly softened. "If you want to know more about yourself or any supernatural being that's ever walked the earth I recommend checking out the archives at Midnight Shadow pack. They have the largest collection of ancient text from as far back to when native Americans first called these lands home." Alex looked over to Caleb. "I'd give Alpha Daniel and Alpha Matthew a call they could probably give you a few days there to look for what she needs."

Caleb hummed giving him only a nod in reply. Taking that as a cue Alex gave me a nod and one to Caleb before taking his exit.

The gym was once again filled with silence, that was, until Caleb wrapped his arms around my back pulling me flush against the hard plain of his abs. He couldn't wait anymore it was like this was the only thing on his mind the whole time. My mouth parted as I took in every detail of his glowing sapphire blue eyes. My breathe was sucked right out of my lungs as I openly gawked at the masterpiece that stared so dominating down at me.

Before I could say anything or find my breathe Caleb captured my lips with his bringing me closer to his chest. My back arched as I wrapped my arm around his neck and cupped his stubbled jaw with my other. A small moan sounded from the back of my throat as his tongue dove into my mouth with dominating intentions. I allowed him to take control as I let him trail his fingers just beneath the hem of my t-shirt. The ripple of sparks that invaded my senses nearly sent me into over drive as I soon felt like I was getting lost in the moment, in a good way of course.

I pulled back to talk to him but I was at a lost for words when I saw the smallest of pouts on Caleb's lips. "So who's Alpha Daniel and Alpha Matthew?" I felt bad cutting our make out session short but I wanted to know more about myself.

Caleb groaned quietly as he looked down, he was less than pleased we had stopped kissing. "Alpha Daniel is the son of Alpha Matthew. Alpha Matthew is in the midst of training and handing over his duties to his son. Daniel is only nineteen and still has much to learn before his father hands everything over to him."

"Do you trust them?"

The timid shrug Caleb gave to the answer gave the unwanted feeling there was lack of assurance. I must have showed how off put I was with his lack of confidence because he was quick to explain.

"Daniel is young and eager to become the new alpha. He lacks experience and is ignorant to say the least."

"So everything you aren't." I said matter-of-factory. There was a tug at the corner of his lips that begged for a smirk to appear but Caleb suppressed the urge.

"Did you just call me old?"
