《Deception (Book #1) ✅》~43: I Can Explain~

My stomach fell to the bottom of my stomach as I watched my sister start to close the door. "Aurora-"

She stopped herself midway as I crammed my foot in between the door and the door frame. The pressure of the door hitting my foot made it hard for me to control the hiss that escaped my lips.

"You aren't answering me." Aurora warned trying to push the door harder against my planted foot. Her visible glare was a haunting reminder how selfish I had been for not checking up on her and Jozy.

"What do you want me to say?"

"I want the truth!" She was practically screaming it in my face.

I flinched at her hostile tone, finding my sister's sudden lack of restraint unusual. What had she seen or heard to make her ask such a bizarre question? I told myself it was bizarre but as the events that had unfolded since my birthday, the question was rather normal in comparison.

As I stared at my sister searching for an indication of what caused her to be so suspicious, I had become oblivious to the tiny figure that was latched onto her legs.

"Mommy, it's just auntie Evie." Jozy's little voice spoke up. My adorable niece was timid of me regardless of her words, I could only assume that was due to Aurora's uninviting demeanor.

Giving Jozy a heartwarming smile I tracked my eyes back up to my sister's. I watched as she tried relentlessly to shut the door.

"Aurora stop, I can explain."

"Explain what? How I found out the night you slept over wasn't just a horrible prank gone wrong? Or the fact that those- those things weren't human?!" She pulled the door wider for a brief moment only to swing it harder against my foot again.

Biting my lip I ignored the shooting pain that traveled up my leg.

She needed to calm down if I was going to have any hope in reasoning with her. Thinking it over and over in my head I composed myself to keep a leveled head. "You're right, they aren't human."

My blunt words hit her like a bolt of lightning as the fingers that wrapped around the edge of the door stiffened. Her eyes darted to my two friends behind me. I didn't miss the small tug on Jozy's shirt as she simultaneously tore her eyes away from them and back to me.

"I'll explain everything, just-" I sighed hoping she could see my intentions weren't to scare her off or harm her or whatever she may have thought. I had come here to check on her to feel a small bit of normalcy. I had to find a way to show her I was still very much her sister, her little sister, but I felt defeated. '- can you please let me in." She was quick to shake her head pushing on the door once again to shut it, I hadn't moved my foot, however. "Fine can we at least talk outside?"

When I offered a different location she stopped pushing the door as she rolled her bottom lip nervously into her mouth. She had a thoughtful look on her face as she started to weigh out the pros and cons of my offer. As quickly as she was lost in her own thoughts she was sprung out of them and she nodded.

"Go around back." She muttered. I could hear Taylor moving already around the house to the back patio.

Aurora motioned to my foot that still held the door open, reluctantly I pulled it back feeling the tingles of pain from holding it open erupt up my leg. I wouldn't be surprised if later I had a bruise on my foot from this.

With a heavy sigh, I turned to follow after Taylor. Naní had been waiting to watch me and the surroundings intently as she looked around at the woods. For some reason, I was put on edge.

"Relax Eve," She quickened her steps to walk next to me. "I can smell the anxiety coming off of you."

I rose my arm leaning my head next to it to smell. "Is it that obv-" I stopped myself mid-sentence when I remembered their strong sense of smell. "I forgot you guys can smell that stuff." Naní just giggled softly as she quickened her steps to walk next to me.

"Really Rora, you're gonna make us talk through the crack of the sliding glass door." I could hear the insulted tone in Taylor's voice before I even came around to the back of the house.

My sister's attitude flared up when she heard Taylor's remark "This, is the best that I can do."

"Bull-"

"Taylor!" I shouted shutting her up. There was a place and time for pushback, right now was not the time. Taylor needed to learn the appropriate time to speak up and when to hold her tongue.

"Evie, she can't be serious."

"I'm as serious as a fucking heart attack. I'm not coming outside. This is as far as I am going." She picked up Jozy in her arms as she gave us all a stern look.

"And that's fine, isn't that right Taylor?" Aurora was in charge of everything moving forward. This was her house, and she was willing enough to listen, I didn't want Taylor's brash attitude to dissuade my sister into talking with us, with me.

Taylor rolled her eyes taking a step back from the glass door and taking a seat on the patio chair.

Once everything seemed to be less intense I finally spoke up. "Aurora I came by to see how you were doing? I missed you." I admitting allowing my honesty to hopeful ease her nerves. I was wrong it did the complete opposite.

"You missed me? You left me believing I was having a mental break down." She fumed, narrowing her eyes at me, I looked away guilty of my part in all this. "You had me thinking I was falling ill like mom."

My heart twisted in my chest and I recollected our mother slowly falling ill to her schizophrenia. She believed she could see people that weren't truly there. I could remember her telling us stories of her walking alone and suddenly finding an older woman that helped her find her way back home. It was always the same story and she would freak out anytime this "woman" appeared in front of us. She was terrified we could "see" it. I can remember so vividly how panicked she was and how terrified she made it all seem.

"How did you expect me to explain all of... this." I waved my arms around to Taylor and Naní. "I didn't understand any of this until a few weeks ago, you couldn't honestly think I could just dump that kind of information on you. You would have thought I was insane!"

"So you left me to think I was insane." She shot back.

"I didn't think you saw or knew anything." I tried to get her to understand. "I'm sorry I should have checked up on you sooner. What would you like to know?"

Her eyes darted to Naní. "What are they? What is she?" Aurora pointed at Nani who was quietly standing next to me, her eye were continuously scanning the treeline.

"They are werewolves." The words burst from my lips before I could put much thought into them. I had to spit it out or I thought I'd never come clean to her. "They aren't evil though. They'd never hurt you."

Her eyes flashed between my own and Naní's as she analyzed her up and down. "I'm not worried about Taylor, I'm worried about her." Her eyes never left Naní as she muttered her words.

"Naní is my friend Aurora you don't have to be scared. Naní and Taylor are my friends and they are here to watch over me."

"Watch over you? For what? Is Roy still following you around? He showed up here-"

I had to cut her off as my heart fell to my the pit of my stomach and bile rose in my throat the bitter taste tickled the back of my tongue. "He stopped by? When? For what?" It was hard not to sound panicked and I knew I failed miserably when Taylor stood up suddenly at my horror.

"He stopped by a few days ago. He said he went to your apartment to check on you. Roy mentioned you were hanging out with some guy lately and was worried something happened to you when you didn't answer the door at your place."

So Roy was still stalking me. Knowing what he was now gave me even more of a chilling feeling. What if he went to my apartment to kill me, or Caleb? Why the hell would he just show up... randomly?

"What guy is he taking about Eve?"

Her question slapped me back to reality. "Caleb."

"Who the hell is that?"

"My mate. Listen, did Roy say anything else to you?" I bit the inside of my cheek as I waited for her answer.

"No, was he supposed to?"

"N-no, I was just wondering." My anxiety was climbing higher by the second. I looked to Taylor for some guidance but even she looked unsure. "Aurora I-"

Naní interrupted me grabbing my upper arm. "Eve have you spoken to Caleb?" The sudden change in conversation gave me a sense of irritation.

I furrowed my eyebrows together confused by her question. Was he expecting a call from me or something? I shook my head no and I didn't miss the nervous side glance she gave Taylor. There were some unspoken words that were shared between them both as they looked at one another.

"Do you have your cell phone?" She asked me.

"No," I remember halfway through the drive that I had left it in the library, now that I thought about it Caleb had probably blown up my phone to get a hold of me this whole time. I can only imagine what he would do when he saw me. "I forgot it back at the estate."

"Estate?" Aurora's voice brought my attention back to her. I had momentarily forgotten that she was still standing on the other side of the glass door. "What is a mate Eve? What estate are you talking about? Why are you involved with- with those things?"

There were so many things now floating in my head. Roy, Caleb, Aurora, it was all so overwhelming that it was becoming increasingly more difficult to focus on one at a time. I should focus on answering Aurora's questions first then move on to the next issue, but how? I was now paranoid about Roy and worried about what awaited for me back at the estate when I saw Caleb, he was going to be furious.

"Werewolves have mates, like soulmates, a perfect match. I have a mate, his name is Caleb." My sentences came out choppy and blunt but I had no other way of going about this, it had to be ripped off like a bandaid. So I didn't allow Aurora or anyone to interrupt me as I continued on. "Caleb is an alpha, the leader of his pack. Nani and Taylor are my...personal guards. They watch over me since I am the Luna, the female equivalent of a queen, of the pack being Caleb's mate." I took a step closer to the door. "They are good people." I said softly.

Aurora reached out to the handle of the sliding glass door, she was readying herself if she had to lock the door. "They aren't people Eve, how did you get involved with these things?"

"Caleb owns the club by my apartment. The night you picked me up... he helped me escape from a group of people that were after me. They were hunters, hunters that kill supernaturals that are... evil." The words felt thick in my mouth as it sounded more and more surreal all that I've been through and I was only touching the tip of the iceberg. "Roy is a hunter, I'll just recently found out. You need to stay away from him Aurora he's not a good guy, he tried to kill me the night you picked me up at the club. That's how I ended up there I was running from him."

As I finally said these words a loud it was like a lightbulb went off in my head. Roy was a hunter... and a group of hunters just so happened to be chasing after me moments after I escaped Roy. That couldn't be just a coincidence, could it?

Roy was trying to take me. He wasn't being nice that day all for nothing, and as I thought about it more the more I came to realize that he might not have really been there to kill me but to kidnap me. Why though? Was he still lurking around?

I must have visibly paled because before I knew it I was staring face to face with Aurora and there wasn't glass between us. She had come out from hiding behind her door and was just inches in front of me as she held my hand.

"Eve, I-" Aurora started to say.

With the emotional roller coaster going on in my head and how distraught I was connecting dots that I didn't necessarily want to connect, I embraced my sister. I held on to her as if she would disappear before me.

"You need to stay away from him Aurora, don't pick up the phone for him, don't answer any of his questions, and don't-" I pulled away from her to see her tearful face. "I mean it, don't open the door if he shows up again."

"This is crazy Eve."

"Please promise me." Tears began to prick my eyes. I wasn't sure if it was because of the amount of time I hadn't seen her, the overwhelming emotions, or the bigger picture that was unfolding for me as I began to see how many moving parts were at play. I had more than the rat in the pack that was after me. How would I tell Caleb and should I even stress him with that kind of information?

"Eve-"

"Promise me Aurora, you have to, you have to!" I was practically begging her as I thought about how close she came to Roy and she didn't even know how foul his intentions were.

"Okay, okay, I promise." A stray tear streamed down her olive cheek as she stared down at me with guilt and pity.

"Mommy, don't be thad." I chuckled when I noticed Jozy clutching the bottom of Aurora's shirt. Her bouncy dark curls shine in the setting sun's rays.

Aurora picked her up and giggled with a sniffle. "Mommy isn't sad silly."

"But you're crying, you are thad mommy." Jozy's innocents was soon making us all much more at ease. Oh, how I wished I was a child again. Life was so much more simple than. "Mommy do you need a kith? Here." Jozy reached out to Aurora's face placing a hand on either cheek and leaning down to give her mom a kiss on the forehead. "All better!" She shouted excited.

Every one of us laughed enjoying the brief moment of peace. It was brief, however, as Naní grabbed my wrist grabbing my attention.

"We need to head back now. Caleb's orders and I can't keep defying him." Naní looked sad to bring this bliss moment to an end but she was right, we had to head back now. I knew Caleb would have a mouth full of disappointing words to spray at me but then again as I looked back to my sister and niece, it was all worth it.

They were my world, and I would do anything to make sure that they were okay. They deserved the truth. I wanted them to move into the estate but I knew that Aurora would object. She wouldn't give up my parents' house for anything, this was her whole livelihood besides Jozy.

Nodding my head to acknowledge her comment I brought both Jozy and Aurora in for one last longing huge before I head off. I didn't know when I would next see them and knowing how tense the situation is back at the estate with the rat and now Roy, it didn't seem ideal to come and visit them again anytime soon.

"I love you. I'll see you again I promise." I clutched onto my sister's hand as I emphasized the promise but I intended to keep my word. I would be back and hopefully, the next time I did everything would be smoothed over.

"I love you too. Please stay safe. And Eve, I'm sorry for assuming. I was wrong."

With one last smile, I followed after Naní and Taylor, they had been waiting a few steps behind me. It was hard to turn away and even harder to watch as the SUV pulled off leaving Aurora and Jozy waving goodbye on the front step. Tears pricked my eyes but I pushed the urge down, crying would do nothing to change anything.

I just hoped that Caleb would understand the sudden determination I had to see her and good thing that I did, how else would I have known that Roy was out here looking for me still. My stomach churned when I thought about his obsession over me.

~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~

There was muffled yelling I could hear but I was still coming out of sleep to really register any words in the muffled speech.

"Shit." I heard someone hiss from the front seat. The distress in their voice was enough to peel my eyes open.

Once they were open I sat up dazed, my head still foggy with sleep, and looked at Taylor and Naní. I thought I had seen both of them on edge and scared when Caleb was mad and found out about us leaving, but how they looked now was enough to make me unnerved.

"What is going on?" I asked. Just as the words came out there was a loud thud and someone's body hit the hood of the car. The flash of blonde meant that it was none other than Alex, but who the hell shoved him that hard.

As I moved further up on the back seat to peer between Naní and Taylor I soon had my answer. There standing in all his perfection was none other than Caleb but it wasn't the normal man I was used to, no this time he looked feral.

"You need to calm down Caleb." I heard Lawerence order him, which seemed to only exasperate Caleb further as his eyes grew pitch black and his claws dug into his palms. There was a trail of blood that fell from his fists as he pierced his flesh.

"Don't tell me what to do. Your mates should be able to listen to simple orders!" I could barely understand what Caleb said through his deep growl and the muffled sound the glass created.

There was this growing feeling inside of me that I need to go over to him, to calm him. It didn't make much sense to me where this urge grew from because as I stared at my mate he was more feral than a rabid dog, not even Alex or Lawerence dared to get that close to him, but then here I was pulling at the handle of the door.

The doors locked however as I pulled. I looked at the rearview mirror to see Naní giving me a stern look.

"What are you doing?" She questioned.

There was loud yelling all of a sudden as I watched Caleb try and push through Lawerence and Alex. Alex was yelling at Caleb to relax which only made Caleb dig his claws deeper into Alex's arms. Lawerence had his arms wrapped around Caleb's torso desperately pulling him away with all of his might.

It wasn't enough as Caleb suddenly picked Alex up throwing him over his shoulder and onto his back. There was a painful grunt let out and Naní now was moving to grab the handle of the door as was Taylor. Taylor watched on as Lawerence tried to control Caleb's furious mission to get to the SUV.

"Unlock to the doors Naní, I can stop him," I explained as I watched Caleb start to grow fur on his forearms. He was about to shift and if he did I feared not even I would be able to calm him down. His words from weeks ago resonated within my head as I remembered how he said "you are more a wolf than a human" when they shift. If I didn't try now to calm him I feared he wouldn't hesitate to hurt anyone, even myself.

There was another string of shouts and I pulled vigorously at the door handle. "Unlock it now!" I ordered leaving Naní with no other option but to listen to me.

The lock sounded as I pulled on the handle once more. I flung the door open as I came around the car to stand in Caleb's line of sight. The moment his eyes landed on my own his nostrils flared and he stiffened in place. No matter how hard Lawerence tried to pull against Caleb's to slow pursuit towards me Caleb continued to approach.

Once Caleb was just a mere foot in front of me I didn't break eye contact, it wasn't that I tried to keep my sights on his, it was more like a trans that I couldn't look away.

His chest was glistening with sweat, it was only now that I fully realized that he wasn't wearing a shirt. His muscles were tight against his unblemished skin as they flexed with anticipation. With the same urge to calm him and bring him out of his rage, I placed my palm to his heated cheek. The eruption of sparks that descended my arm found home in my chest giving me a euphoric sense of reality. It felt intense and sensational but above all it took my breath away.
