《Deception (Book #1) ✅》~42: Weak~

"Did you know that Nora and Loz slept together?" I peered over the old book I was reading to see Taylor pacing from one side of the library to the other. Her blonde her was tied high on her head a few stray strains framing her face.

We had been going through the library in search of books that could hopefully explain what I was. We hadn't come across many but I was lucky enough to find one that was at least 200 years old that dove deep into what banshees did and their purpose.

I was trying to read when all Taylor could busy herself with was Nora's and Loz's past.

"It's in the past Taylor and it was long before you and Loz met." I went back to reading the book but I hadn't gotten far before it was torn from my hands. "Taylor-"

"Are you even listening to me?" There was irritation in her voice. Her eyes glowed ember before they faded back to her natural brown orbs.

"Of course I'm listening. I just don't think it's that big of a deal. What someone does before you should have no impact on you." I explained trying to grab the book as she moved it far out of my reach.

"But they slept together! Like recently."

I gave up on reaching for the book as I crossed my arms and rested my back against the arm of the sofa. My legs had been propped up on the sofa as I was reading earlier and I was too lazy to stand up and grab the book.

"How recently?" If I wasn't going to be able to read the book I want to, then I was at least going to have to entertain her conversation. It was more like a concern for her but she wasn't about to admit that.

"Like, I don't know two months ago?"

"And when did you come to the estate?" I questioned her which earned me a growl from her. I'll never understand the short temper werewolves had.

"Why does that matter?" She grumbled resentment in her voice. When I gave her a pointed look she attempted to answer my question. "It matters be-because..." She stuttered searching for her words. Raising an eyebrow at her failing attempt at proving a point she was rapidly losing, she groaned tossing the dusty book back into my chest. She threw with more force than what was needed and a cloud of dust plumed in my face.

"Really?" I shot at her for excessive force.

She only rolled her eyes and plopped herself down on the adjacent recliner to me. "You'll never understand what it's like to be a werewolf and having a mate. It's- it's-"

"Overwhelming? Intoxicating? Enchanting?" I started listing.

"More like possessive, territorial, and jealousy."

"That sounds terrible." Taylor nodded at my response her eyes closed. I assumed to calm herself or her wolf, I wasn't really sure, I was still new to all of this.

With her eyes still closed she spoke up. "Don't get me wrong we feel all the stuff just as you said, it's just fuck'n worse. Like you wanna cut a bitches head off, kind of worse."

A soft chuckle came from me as I watched Taylor open her eyes and lean her elbows on her legs. "Are you telling me you want to fight Nora?"

"What I'm saying is if I were her I'd steer clear of Loz if she knows what good for her."

"She's an alpha female." I put the book on the coffee table before continuing on. "I may be new to all of this but I'm pretty sure that alpha means strong, faster, and smarter."

"She's not smarter than me!" Taylor growled I flinched back at her sudden abundance of aggression.

"Okay, okay. So she's not smarter than you but she definitely stronger and faster. If you really are challenging her do you think you'll have much of a chance?" I paused thinking about the conversation Caleb had with me the other night. He told me to stay away from Nora. I never asked him why but I intended to keep my distance from her if it meant less problems and less stress for him.

"You have no faith in me Evie." Taylor interjected unbeknownst of Caleb's sudden suspicions towards his sister.

"I don't think starting something with her is going to do anything but cause problems." I knew my words would fall on deaf ears as Taylor was never one to listen to reason. She was a firecracker at that and she was always one match flick away from igniting. It was a miracle she was showing the restraint she was. It wouldn't surprise me if Lawerence had anything to do with it.

"That's what Loz told me." She said digging her fingers in her hair. When she threw her head back in exasperation she miss judged the hard edge of the recliner cursing under her breath. "Fuck I need to get the hell out of this house!"

"O-Kay." I stood up watching her rub at the sore spot on her head then an idea dawned on me. "Wanna go for a drive?"

Taylor's face scrunched up in disgust. "Suuuure, I just love vomiting everything I had for breakfast."

I rolled my eyes. "I'm being serious."

"As am, I. Do you not remember the last long-ass car ride here?"

"Please?" I pleaded in hope my best friend would give in but she simply shook her head in disagreement. "Come on Taylor, I want to get out of the house."

It wasn't a lie. I wanted to get out of here and away from Nora. If Taylor even had the slightest feeling of getting into it with her it would mean I would be inevitably be near her. I could hear Caleb's voice now reminding me to keep away from her.

It wasn't only Caleb's heeded warning that echoed in my head it was also the need to see Aurora. It had been a month since I last saw her and I was growing more and more anxious by the days. If Taylor wasn't going to give me back my medication than talking to Aurora was the next best thing.

"I don't know-"

"Please, I haven't seen my sister in weeks... I miss her." I let my face fall knowing Taylor wouldn't be able to resist. I hopped if I sounded more upset she'd change her mind.

Nothing was better than a long conversation with your older sister I thought.

"Eh, I don't know Evie. We should probably bring Nani or Alex along. We shouldn't go out of the packhouse alone let alone a five-hour car ride to see your sister." Suddenly she had decided to drop her earlier irritation about Nora and now she had replaced it with an overly mother-like facade.

"We haven't had any threats in weeks. I highly doubt that something would happen. If it helps we can ask Naní to come along." I couldn't tell Taylor that Caleb made it perfectly clear he didn't want anyone else around me besides them two, she's get suspicious and I wasn't sure what all she already knew.

With a reluctant sigh Taylor stood up. "I still don't think it's a great idea... but for you I'll do it." I beamed. "Also because I can't stay much longer in this place with her scent everywhere. My wolf needs time to cool off." I rolled my eyes with a chuckle. I was just relieved that she gave into my need. "Make sure you tell Caleb before we leave."

She was already leaving and couldn't see the pain face I had from her last words.

I couldn't tell Caleb not before I left. He wouldn't let me go if I did. Not with out him at least and I just wanted to see Aurora. If I brought him along he'd only make her suspicious, I couldn't risk it. So I got ready to leave, leaving the consequences in keeping this information from him, in the back of my head.

I'll deal with it when I have to.

"You did tell Alpha Caleb about this right?" Naní turned onto the highway as she looking at me through the review mirror. Her pointed look told me she needed to hear the answer to be yes. Sadly, though I hadn't asked him or told him what I was up to.

With all the never ending meetings he had with Lawerence and Alex I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even notice my lack of presence. I hoped that was the case at least because I had a gut feeling that if he knew I had just left he'd have a conniption.

I mustered up enough courage to nod my head and lie to Naní. I hoped she would be able to pick up on my slight hesitation.

"Does Aurora know we are stopping by?" Taylor asked from the passenger seat. She had her hood over her eyes and was laying back as far as she could in the seat. She really got motion sickness so easily.

I looked out the window of the SUV as the trees wizzed by in a blur of greens and browns. "I haven't. I wanted to surprise her."

It was the truth. I hadn't seen my sister in months and I had left her pretty upset when I spewed out the lie Caleb forced me to tell her about my birthday. I was trying to figure out ever since how I was going to get her to forgive me for the "prank" that happened on my birthday that scarred her and Jozy.

Aurora could always look through me like glass, it was going to take an extreme amount of effort to lie to her if she asked about that night again. I hoped to god she wouldn't and she would forget or refuse to bring it up. Honestly maybe having her mad at me wasn't such a bad thing after all, she wouldn't ask as many questions.

As I mindlessly gazed at the obscure scenery I relaxed into the back seat as I pieced together what I would do once I saw her. My jumbled mess of thought and feelings were immense as I tried to figure out what I would be able to even say. I was thankful Taylor had fallen asleep and that Naní wasn't much of a talker, though I think she was just focused on road, that I was able to take a moment to reflect.

Hours past and I was soon dozing off though I tried to keep my eyes open. Just as I thought sleep would take me I lurched forward as the tires of the SUV squealed as we came to an abrupt stop.

My heart sunk as I readied myself for the worst.

As I looked around we were in the middle of no where without a single car in sight. Nothing was outside I hadn't seen a wolf or a person matter of fact, so then why the sudden stop?

Looking to the front seat I saw Naní grasping the steering wheel with a death grip, her eyes were glowing as they locked on something far in the distance. I gulped when I tried to see what she was looking at but there was nothing there. Could she see something that I could not? It must be, I thought, but I could be wrong.

"Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Hit the mother fucking breaks harder. I don't think I smacked my forehead hard enough against the dash!" Taylor growled out giving Naní a livid glare. "What the fuck is wrong-"

Taylor stilled, her eyes glowing ember as a pained expression formed on her face. What was going on?

My heart sped up another hundred miles an hour.

"Are- are you guys okay?" I stuttered trying to reach out to Taylor's arm the was rested on the center console. Taylor jerked her arm away from me as if my touch was toxic to her skin. "Taylor?"

Both Naní and Taylor closer their eyes for a brief moment before their eyes snapped open and they turned simultaneously to meet my gaze. They looked equally agitated and... scared? What did they know that I didn't?

Then Naní broke the silence first, I was relieved but my relief would evaporate just as quickly as it arrived as the chilling tone Naní spoke with stunned me. "You didn't tell Caleb did you Eve?"

My eyes darted between the two. I was seated in the middle of the backseat and both of them blocked the view out of the windshield as they faced me. I couldn't suppress the gulp that resonated from my throat.

"No- but I- I thought- I didn't want him- I meant to but I-" I couldn't spit out anything in a coherent sentence. There was too many things flooding my mind that it all felt like mush. One big messy pile of mush.

"Did you or did you not tell Caleb Evelyn?" Taylor asked her aggression making me want to crawl into the trunk of the SUV.

Not telling Caleb can't be that bad, right? But then why else would they look like they were on the verge of yelling at me?

"I said no-"

"Are you stupid!?" Taylor screamed in my face. I flinched back against the seat, my body was pressed so hard against the back of it, I hoped I'd melt into the fabric. "Don't answer that." She flung her hand up in front of me dismissing my mouth that had just opened to apologize. "I can't- I just-" She took a huge breath of air as she pinched the bridge if her nose trying to calm herself.

"She doesn't even know what she just did Taylor. Yelling at her isn't going to do anything." Naní butted in. "However, it was stupid Eve. We have to turn back now before Caleb sends everyone out here for you."

She turned around turning her wheel to complete a U-turn.

"N-no wait!" I yelled reaching over her with an unexpected surge of panicked adrenaline. Reaching for the steering wheel I pulled against Nani's hold to stop her from turning. "Stop!" I yanked down swiftly catching Naní of guard. The sudden change in direction caused the SUV to fish tail and we were all soon swerving in and out of control. Naní slammed on the break before we ended up in a ditch on the side of the road.

When the vehicle came to a stop there was deep silence all except for the harsh panic breathing from the three of us.

"What the fuck Eve have you lost your god damn mind?" Taylor shoved me back into the back seat and I had to let go of the steering wheel as I flung back. "Do you understand what you just put me and Naní through?"

I looked at Taylor trying to form my apology in my head all the while Naní was gripping the steering wheel making her knuckles white with tension. Bitting my lip I looked back to Taylor.

"I didn't think-"

"You didn't think what? That he'd be furious you left without telling him? Eve, you are a Luna of a pack. That- that's like being a queen of an empire." She threw her hands up in exasperation. "You are the most important piece in chess. If you get hurt, or- or taken-" Her voice trailed off making the pounding of my heart that much louder in my head.

"She didn't know Taylor. She's human she wouldn't know what an Alpha can be like with his mate." Naní spoke but her strong grip on the steering wheel never faultered as she stared off into the distance.

"What do you mean?" I practically whispered.

Taylor turned around slouching in the passenger seat as she looked over at Naní. I guess they were deciding between each other who was going to say what. With a reluctant sigh Taylor let her head fall back against the head rest. Her eyes were closed as she licked her bottom lip nervously.

"Caleb mind linked us. It's like telepathic talking in our heads between members of the pack." She further explained knowing I would think this all was bizarre. "Fuck I have a migraine!" She groaned. "Anyways, he didn't know you were gone. He went on high alert basically and started shouting orders in everyone's head. Naní and I had to answer to him just now and he's not happy with us to say the least."

"If-if I would have known I- I'm so sorry. I didn't know it would get you two in trouble." I apologized hoping they'd hear the sincerity in my voice.

Guilt washed over me as I scanned over the center dashboard where the GPS screen was open. We were only a half hour away from Aurora's place, I was so close, and yet so far away. Naní must have seen where my eyes went from the rear view mirror because she resentfully put the car in drive and turned the car around heading into the direction of my sister's house.

"What are you doing?" Taylor asked confused at Nani's sudden disobedience to Caleb.

With a tight grip still on the steering wheel Naní answered her. "We're almost there. There's no point in turning around now. I won't lie to my alpha but it makes no sense to turn around when we are just about there."

"No, I can't let you guys get in trouble because of me. It was my stupid mistake." I muttered pulling at my curls in distress.

"Fuck it! Caleb already hates me. He can't possibly hate me more." Taylor shrugged rolling her eyes careless of what wrath might be awaiting her... no awaiting us, when we got back to Black Nova estate.

"This goes against everything that I am... but" Naní paused as she came to admit something I could tell she was hesitant about saying aloud.

"But?" I pressed on not allowing her to suppress her thoughts.

"But, you're growing on me. You're different than most Lunas and it's a nice change for once." She explained giving me a warm smile in the mirror.

"You say that as if Cora is a handful or something." I commented thinking back to how formal and outspoken Cora was compared to me.

Naní chuckled from the front seat. "I wouldn't say all that. It's just- I've been in two different packs in my life and I can confidently say that Lunas have always had a tendency to be- I don't know a bit-"

"Overbearing?" Taylor butted in.

"No." Naní refuted.

"Arrogant?"

"No."

"Egotistical?"

"No." Nani groaned as Taylor opened her mouth to speak.

"Self-absorbed bitches?"

"Who the hell fucked up your image of Lunas?" Naní spat suddenly feeling defensive from Taylor's rude assumptions, if you asked me they were more like accusations than assumptions.

Taylor growled crossing her arms as she leaned against the door pulling her hood over her face. I guess she was going back to sleep.

"As I was saying before Tweedledee over hear cut me off, I was going to say you aren't as demanding as other Lunas I've seen. Then again you aren't a regular Were Luna. You're human."

But I wasn't human, not anymore. "Do I make this pack weak being human?" The question flew out of my mouth before I could stuff it to the back of my mind. The sudden stiffness of Naní's body didn't help either.

"Why do you ask that?"

"Because no one else in your pack is human." It was true I never noticed anyone else around the estate that looked... normal. They were all toned to perfection and tall in stature. I was a feeble looking five foot four woman, if I could even call myself that.

"First off it's our pack. You are just as much a part of Black Nova as the rest of us. Besides this woman." Naní sarcastically pointing to Taylor.

"Shut up I'm as much a part of this pack as you two. I'm just not catering to Caleb's every need." She groaned as she peeked her narrowed eyes out of her hood. "I'm not his errand boy."

Naní growled in disagreement giving Taylor a pointed look as she talked so lowly of her alpha. "It's not just errands, they are duties and orders to maintain the pack and protect each other."

"Whatever, this is way I was never a part of a pack."

The SUV fell silent as the air inside grew thick with tension. Naní and Taylor have gotten close but their stark differences couldn't be more obvious than right now. Naní was always abiding by Caleb's orders all the while Taylor rebelled against anyone that dared to control her.

The sound of the gravel driveway alerted me of my childhood home. As we approached the house I saw the blinds of the house pull slightly from the kitchen window.

Aurora was home.
