《Deception (Book #1) ✅》~19: Pretty Little Neck~

Sitting in my six o'clock philosophy class I continuously found myself thinking back to Caleb's warning. He knew I was lying but he hadn't pressed on the fact that I was withholding information. I knew that once class was over if he was there waiting at the apartment for me he was going to bring it up again. The anticipation was making me sick to my stomach.

Hopefully, he wouldn't be home until late like usual. I would be fast asleep leaving no room for him to question me.

I looked out the window of the class door to see the guard Caleb had assigned to watch me tonight. Alex was busy with something tonight, Caleb had told me, so it was Jessie watching me.

Jessie was much taller than Alex and Caleb, looking to be around six foot six. His light brown hair and dark brown eyes looked sharp as he looked around the building. He looked over every individual that left and came in. His nose would twitch as he sniffed the atmosphere, no doubt trying to sense any predator that may be lingering around.

"How about you Evelyn?"

The sound of a voice brought my attention back to the confines of the classroom. All eyes were stationed on me with laser focus. My eyes widened realizing that the professor was asking me a question.

My blank an awkward stare was a tell tale sign I hadn't heard a word he said to me.

"I'm sorry-" I told him fiddling with my pencil nervously. "I didn't hear the question."

"Miss Evelyn if you wish to pass this class I advice you stop day dreaming and focus more on you academics." He warned his steel gray eyes drilling into my own. I gulped nodding my head in reply. My cheeks were on fear with embarrassment, no doubt they were rosy with a blush.

Quickly the professor asked the same question for me to someone else annoyed at my lack of attention in his class. I couldn't help it! If only he knew what kind of shit show I had now become a part of.

After calling me out I made it my goal to diligently pay attention and take notes. I couldn't afford to fail this class I didn't have rich parents to pay for my schooling. I only had one shot at this.

As our ten minute break approached I gazed out the window of the door again. This time I didn't see Jessie sitting on the bench. So indulged with the lecture I had missed when he had left. He probably went to the bathroom I told myself finding it odd that he wasn't there when I looked. Do werewolves use the bathroom? I thought. I mentally face palmed knowing the answer to be yes of course they did they were... human. I mean I sure as hell knew Taylor used the bathroom. Why would they be any different?

Another hour went by and periodically I would look for Jessie he still hadn't returned. I was beginning to think something was off. Did this guy not take his job as seriously as Alex? Or was he just giving me space?

The thought of texting Caleb to see if this was normal crossed my mind, but I stopped reminding myself of the conversation we left off on.

We were all soon dismissed to leave. The sun had set well over an hour ago. As I exited the classroom and entered the hallways I looked around for Jessie... nothing. There was no sight of the giant anywhere. I bit my lip trying to figure out what to do next.

Should I walk home on my own? Should I call Taylor to pick me up? Should I call Caleb? Maybe I should just catch an Uber or something? Maybe Jessie is sick in the bathroom.

The thought had me walking to the men's bathroom. Looking from side to side I saw no one. It was nine o'clock and the late night class were all dismissed for the day. I didn't think anyone was left in the building expect the occasional janitor. No one would see me if I entered the men's bathroom.

I took a deep breath feeling awkward about going in the wrong bathroom but I had to know if he was alright. Pushing the door open I entered to see a perfectly neat and clean bathroom. There wasn't anything odd or out of place, just a single F this school scribbled on one of the stale doors.

I hummed utterly confused at his disappearance. Surely, Caleb didn't want me to be left alone and with no one to watch over me, to protect me. So where did he go?

Suddenly the lights cut off and I was bathed in darkness. I gulped, unsettled at the lack of light. I turned the flashlight on my phone one to illuminate the room.

"Relax Eve, it's after hours," I took a deep breath to try and calm my racing heart beat. "the lights are just on a timer."

Pulling the door to the bathroom open to leave I looked at the time. It was a ten past nine now. I didn't want to be alone anymore and I was desperate to find anyone still in the building.

Stepping out into the hallway the only light that shine besides my phone was the red EXIT signs above the varies exit doors. I bit my lip nervously. I should call an Uber.

Looking down at my phone and walking at the same time I searched for a ride home. Turning a corner in the hallway to get to the front exit I bumped into a wall hitting my head at the sudden collision.

Hissing and rubbing my head I looked to see what I had ran into. It wasn't a wall of course, I wasn't that blind.

My phone was currently shinning at the ground, I could see black dress shoes. Moving my phone ever so slowly up the legs of the person I bumped into I noticed they were wearing black dress pants, a back blazer, black tie and a white dress shirt. Their hands rested at their sides, skin nearly transparent with lack of color. The length of time it took me to reach their face told me everything I needed to know about the size of this person. They were nearly as tall at Jessie.

"Ahhh, well if it isn't the human Luna of Black Nova Pack." The man's deep voice had me recoiling back a few steps. Doing so alerted me of his glowing violet eyes. What the hell was this man? His jet black hair made his pale skin look sickly white. There was a three gash scar from the top of his temple that sliced down over his left eye down to his jaw. I gulped at his ugly face that sent a shiver down my spine.

Noticing me retreating from him he took a large step closer to me analyzing my every step.

A bead of sweat trickled down the nap of my neck. Starting to shake in fear, my breathing began to quicken, my heart began to pump harder and faster. The fight or flight response was starting to kick in as I anxiously looked around the hallway for the illuminated EXIT signs.

"Go ahead-" The guy said making my snap my head in his direction. "-run. I like a good chase." A sinister smile crept on his colorless face. I didn't wait around to contemplate his words, I swiftly turned around and ran down the hallway.

Where was Jessie? Had this guy done something to him?

The hallway was dark the brief moments I could see the hallway was when I swung my phone forward as I ran. Soon I reached the exit pushing the door open with all of my body weight. Using all of my weight to slam the door open I tripped over my feet and on to the hard pavement, scraping my knees and palms of my hands.

Hissing at the open scrapes on my skin I tried to roll the end of my sleeve over the open wound.

Footsteps were heard coming towards me from the open door. I forgot about the pain and the blood. My only thought was escape. I had to call Caleb. I had to keep moving. What was the use though? He was going to catch me I just knew it. I was prolonging the inevitable.

Pulling myself to my feet I kept running into the open parking lot of the campus. There was only a single car parked, everyone else was quick to leave. Noticing a student inside the car I banged my hands on the window startling the young man inside.

"What the fuck?!" I heard him yell. He looked scared not anticipating for someone to bang on his window.

"Help me please!" I begged tears welling up in my eyes.

He rolled down his window, his eyes still wide with confusion and shock.

"Are you okay?" He asked scanning over my quivering body.

However something else caught his eyes behind me and I cringed knowing it to be the menace with violet eyes. What I hadn't expected was for the young man in the car to be ripped from the car and held in the air by his throat. My stomach twisted with nausea as the pale man held him high above his head as he struggled to break free.

The sounds of him chocking drew me closer to throwing up.

"So... how long do you think he can hold his breath?" The monster of a man questioned a joking ton clear in his voice and a wide grin splayed on his face. I shook my head hoping to god he wasn't being serious. "Little girl I asked you a question. Be polite and answer."

I gulped tears now blurring my vision. I blinked to get a clearer picture. Instantly I wished I hadn't.

The guy was blue in the face now just hanging unconscious in the revolting man's grip. My mouth opened but nothing came out, too frighten to even say a word.

The sickly looking man groaned annoyed at my lack of communication and lowered the guy down but still held a death grip on his neck. I didn't think he had much longer to live by the looks of it. Honestly, he was probably dead by now.

"You're no fun." He rolled his eyes at me bringing the guy closer to his face. He sniffed his neck and hummed. "They taste so much better when they smell like fear." He said just moments before fangs poked out from under his upper lip and bit into the neck of the student.

A scream came from my throat as I backed away and turned to run back into the building. I fumbled with my phone trying to find Caleb's phone number. Pressing his name I started to call. I was profusely crying now trying to find shelter or Jessie. Where the hell was Jessie!?

"Eve?" I heard Caleb's voice on the other end of the line. A wave of relief washed over me but it was instantly gone as I was roughly pulled down to the ground. I yelled out dropping the phone in the process. I heard Caleb yelling on the line but I couldn't make out what he was yelling. The phone was too far away.

"Naughty girl." The man whispered in my ear, pinning my wrists down onto the concrete. He raised my hands above my head straddling me in the process. Kicking for all I was worth, in an attempt to buck him off, I soon became exhausted. "Can't have you calling the big bad wolf to the rescue." He teased in my ear.

Little by little he leaned his head down to my neck where my necklace laid snug to my chest. The rise and fall of my chest drew attention to the colorful gold embellished pendant. His eyes narrowed noticing the flowers inside. His finger trailed along my collar bone as he stopped above the racing pulse at the base of my neck.

"So the Alpha got smart and gave you a Praesidio Casta." He spoke this time with such loathing, as he went to grab the necklace to rip it off. Steam burst from his palm burning the skin on his hand. "Fuck!" Yelling from the pain he got to his feet pulling me up by my hair. "And got a witch to make it untouchable."

He leaned down to pick up the phone Caleb was still yelling my name over and over growling in between each curse word and my name. He sounded frantic.

The pale man pressed the speaker phone button and I could now clearly hear the distress in Caleb's voice.

"Evelyn! What is going on? Answer me for fucks sake!"

"Sorry to break it to you but she's busy at the moment." He taunted smiling down at me.

I could see a trace of blood on his teeth from where he bit the students neck earlier. I whimpered at the sight pulling against his hold on my hair.

"Let me go!" I yelled. The sobs I was trying to hold back coming out once I yelled.

He tightened his grip and turned me around pressing the front of his body to my back. He shoved me up against the buildings wall. The cement of the building scraped my face with the force.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, unless you want that pretty little neck of yours to break." I froze at his words not daring to move an inch.

"I swear to god I'm going to fucking kill you if you lay a hand on her!" Caleb growled on the phone. The sound of wizzing cars on the freeway meant Caleb was speeding from wherever he was.

"Whoops I guess you'll have to try and kill me." He mocked not having a care in the world what this man had to say. "If I were you I wouldn't of given her a Praesidio Casta. Now we'll have to kill her slowly."

Another sob broke free from my throat as I tried to push against the wall. I didn't want to die. He was going to kill me that was his plan all along he was just toying with me.

"Don't you da-" He crushed the phone in his palm tossing it into the grass.

With one swift yank he pulled my hair again making me lean my head back exposing my throat. I knew what he was, there was no doubt he was a Vampire by the way he bit into the guys neck. I shivered as I closed my eyes awaiting my impending doom.

I was gleefully surprised as I heard a bone crunching punch come behind me. My hair was released and I crumbled to sidewalk taking this chance to crawl away.

"Run Evie!" That was Taylor's voice. I whipped around to see her eyes glowing ember, her canines extended and her claws out. She was growling loud as the man regained balance rubbing his face where she had punched.

"You little bitch!" He spat his eyes glowing even brighter with rage.

In the time it took me to blink he had his hands clamped around her neck. Taylor was quick to break free maneuvering her arms under his and forcing them up and out to break free. All at the same time she slashed her claws against his left check leaving three cuts behind. They were eerily similar to the long ones he already had on his face just much smaller.

He hissed like a huge cat aggressive with one thing on its mind, to kill.

He rushed at Taylor tackling her to the ground and pinning her arms to her side. Growling and snapping her teeth at him making him reveal a menacing grin. He bared his fangs and descended down to her neck.

Taylor didn't wait for him to puncture her as her limbs snapped beneath him. Her long blonde hair shortens and spread across her body. Her jeans and sweater shredded to pieces as her face elongated, replaced by dark brow snot and fur.

Standing before me wasn't Taylor... human Taylor... no it was a light furred wolf with a dark brown head and faded black tail.

Her lips were pulled back in a snarl as she lunged at the Vampire with such ferocity. Her jaws snapping around the shoulder of the man bringing him down to his knees. She shook from side to side clamping her jaws even tighter as he yelled and tried to pull away.

He punched her snot making her whine. It was brief however as she leapt onto his back trying to get a bite of his delicate white skin.

Just when I thought she had gotten the right angle he was able to grab a hold of her head. With a grip of steel and strength of a 100 men he swung her around his body and into the wall behind me. I ducked just in time.

Taylor's wolf whimpered as it dropped to the ground. Her body rose and fell as she breathed. She was hurt but not dead, although she should have been with how hard she hit the wall. I rushed over to her but her lips pulled back warning me away. Retracting back from her I heard quick foot steps behind me.

I should have listened to Taylor when she told me to run because the next thing I know I'm throw in the air. Gratefully I didn't hit anything but I tumbled to the ground in a heaping mess.

Taylor took that distraction to her advantage as she got to her feet. She was limping but that didn't stop her from biting into his leg.

There was a snap and I was sure his shin had snapped in half from her bite. The nauseating sound made my stomach churn even more than it already was.

The vampire yelled out in pain but the bite didn't stop him from back handing Taylor head. The hit was hard enough to make her release her bite and she whined again as her head hit the pavement.

"I'm going to enjoy biting your throat out rogue." His voice was low, filled with such distaste.

As he reeled his head back to bit on her neck, to give the last deathly blow, a dark blur rushed behind him. They moved so fast I couldn't see who or what it was. They grabbed the Vampires neck pulling him off of Taylor.

When the man that was holding the Vampire backed into the single street lamp I finally noticed who it was. It was Caleb. His blue eyes were dangerous and livid. He was set on killing this thing and not a single voice, sound, or person was going to stop him.

He pinned the Vampire to the cement wall chocking him with all of his strength. I could see the rippling biceps under his thin black t-shirt. No matter the energy and the relentless amount of attempts the Vampire made it would be no use. He was caught and there was no way for escape from his clutches.

"I told you I'd kill you." I could barely understand what he said because it was mixed with endless growls, but it was clear he was beyond furious.

The vampire hissed still tugging at Caleb's unbreakable hold on his throat. He was panicking knowing what was to come, yet I wasn't ready for it. Nothing could have prepared me for what was to come. The vampires wide and vibrant violet eyes glowed with dread, he was no more ready than I was for what was about to unfold.

In one swift motion Caleb plunged his fist into the vampire's chest making him release a grumble of noises. My breath caught in my throat and my heart sank to the pit of my stomach. It all felt surreal. Just as quick as he punctured his chest he had pulled his hand out. What he held in his palm was what made me finally hurl my birthday cake.

It was a bloody beating heart.
