《Deception (Book #1) ✅》~9: The Cabin~

Caleb pulled into a gravel drive way that finally lead up to a pretty large cabin. There was a lake right next to it, a dock led out a couple yards into the lake. The view was mesmerizing as I gazed out the window. There were snow covered mountain caps just across the lake that reflected on the rippled water.

We really were in the middle of no where.

Caleb parked the car getting out as his phone rang. He disconnected it from the car Bluetooth and proceeded to answer it leaving me alone inside the car.

I glanced at the monitor of the car catching a glimpse of the map just before it shut off.

Yosemite.

We were on the east side of California far from home. I'd be lucky if I'm ever found.

Caleb sounded angry on the phone as he yelled at whoever was on the other end. I was grateful that he had gotten out of the car. After yelling at me earlier I wanted nothing more than to be left alone and but distance between myself and him. The man had temperament issues.

As Caleb continued to talk on the phone I decided to get out of the car. Something about nature always captivated me, probably because it's been awhile since I last was able to enjoy it.

"Hold on, hold on!" I heard Caleb yell to whoever was on the phone. I pitted the person on the other end of line.

"What are you doing? Get back in the car." He demanded his eyes narrowing suspiciously as I turned away from the scenery to face him. He moved around the car to come closer to me, instinctively I stepped back a couple feet.

"I'm not going to run. It's not like I'll find help here," I gestured to the forest and lake. "In the middle of nowhere."

Caleb looked around me before he locked eyes with me again. His ocean blue eyes were even more intense, I swear that I saw them shine brighter for a split second but it must have been the reflection for the lake.

"Just don't go out of my sights." He warned before placing the phone back up to his ear. I nodded my head before I slowly made my way down to the dock.

The water lapped against the wood of the dock. The peaceful noise began to sooth my anxiety as I pulled the jacket I had found, in the duffle bag that Nora had packed for me, tight against my body for warmth. It was chillier up here near the mountains and I wasn't use to it.

I had lost track of time of how long I was there but it was long enough that I sat down to keep myself even warmer. The sun was dropping and so was the temperature, the bone chilling breeze form the mountains wasn't helping either.

The car door closing behind me had me turning around and standing up, watching as Caleb carried our bags inside.

It was unnerving to say the least that my fear of this man was slowly dwindling and I didn't like it. I wanted to be terrified of him still but I was growing more curious than anything but a small doubt about him was still sitting in the pit of my stomach.

You can't trust strangers Evelyn!

Caleb unlocked the door or the cabin on a pin pad throwing the door open and entered. I looked at the lake that was now bathed in a orange and pink hue from the setting sun. Another chilling breeze blow my hair back and my spin shivered from cooling temperature. I hurried my way to the door feeling the warmth from the cabin seep out into the cool wind. I hesitated for a moment but the warmth was too satisfying to resist, so I stepped inside closing the door behind me.

The inside of the cabin was all wood with intricate wood embellishments carved into the wood pillars.

The living room was huge with a fire place and a flat screen TV mounted above it. A leather sectional sofa was across from the the tv with a glass coffee table in front. A stair case was just behind the sofa and I could hear Caleb moving around upstairs.

I ignored the noise, moving deeper into the cabin seeing the granite countertops of the kitchen. Everything looked updated but still held that cabin cozy feel to it. Across from the kitchen was a dinning room much smaller than that of the estate. It held six chairs circling around the oval thick wood table. A red runner laid down the middle as I followed it down I gaped at the floor to ceiling window that allowed you to see the beautiful landscape. I was captivated once again by the snow covered mountains across the lake.

"Have you ever seen nature like this?" His voice broke the silence of the room making me jump. I clutched the jacket tighter to my body.

"No, not really." I replied short and to the point not eager to start a full blown conversation.

"Let me show you around the sight." He said nodding his head to the back door of the cabin that lead to the deck. I pursed my lips unsure and restless with his presence. Did I want to risk going outside with him and possibly be killed and dumped? He would have done that by now on the long stretch of road no cars drove on, I reminded myself. Why would he do it on his property?

I followed him out to the deck. I was surprised he didn't seem bothered by the cold as he stood out there in nothing but his long sleeve shirt. Here I was on the brink of hyperthermia.

"This is Marble Lake." Caleb said pointing to the lake I was admiring earlier. "The mountains just beyond are the Rocky Mountains."

As Caleb continued to show me around he seemed to relax significantly. He sounded and moved around like a normal person unlike his behavior ever since I first saw him. The best way I could put it was that he was looking and acted like he was at ease and at home.

While he showed me around the cabin sight and the surrounding landscape around it, I couldn't help my stomach that made an audible grumble for food.

"Are you hungry?" He quickly asked, a little to eager for my liking. It honestly made me uncomfortable.

Another grumble from my stomach answered his question.

"I'll cook something." He said moving towards the cabin. We were currently out standing on the dock as the sun dipped below the horizon.

"No, I'm okay." I was uncertain of his actions. I was uncomfortable eating anything that he would have made for me. It could be laced with something.

"But you're hungry." His face looked confused. His eyebrows furrowed together as he studied over my shaking body from the cold. I was still shook at the fact he was unfazed by the chilled air.

"Why did you bring me here? You said you were going to show me." I reminded him trying to pry any information about why I was taken.

Caleb took a step closer leaving just a foot or two of distance between us.

"Can you tell me your name first?" He asked his voice just a hair above a whisper.

"No." I replied dropping my gaze from his own intense stare. Why was he so obsessed with knowing my name?

"If you tell me your name I'll promise to explain everything." He told me a sense of solemnity in his tone.

I was trying to wrap my mind around why he care to know my name. Was he trying to put a name to his body that he was about to kill and dump like his previous trophies? I subconsciously facepalmed at my stupid remark. Or was it that far off from the possible truth?

Relax, Evelyn you're going overboard right now. You know he would have killed you already... but would he have? Maybe he isn't finished with me. My stomach nearly feel to my feet at the thought.

"What's wrong?" Caleb asked. He must have seen my caution grow with every second as I was stuck in my head overthinking. "If you still think I'm going to hurt you I hope you've realized by now that I'm not. I just want to know your name, so I don't keep calling you.... well... you."

I looked up at him, behind him the forest now grew eerie with the darkness. There was no moon and the night was even darker than I thought possible.

"Please," He begged. His blue eyes shined blue for a split second again mesmerizing me for a moment. He wasn't carrying himself with dominance or intimidation anymore. He was being calm and collected.

Biting my lip I finally spoke up.

"Evelyn. My name is Evelyn." I finally uttered feeling such regret when I finally spoke.

A small smile showed on his face and I wasn't sure to smile back or be creeped out at his demeanor as he grew more and more happy. He extended his hand out to me. I looked at it and then back to his face. What he crazy? I wasn't taking his hand.

"I'll just follow you." I told him dismissing his extended hand. He frowned but nodded turning around and stepping into the forest toward the side of the cabin.

It was dense and difficult to move through. Caleb moved through the brush with ease as I was nearly slapping myself in the face with every branch I pushed.

Suddenly Caleb stopped, I nearly walked into his back from the sudden stop. He didn't say anything as he stiffened.

"Everything... okay?" I asked. I was becoming anxious again and I was sure he could hear it in my voice as I spoke.

"Yes," He muttered. He took a few steps forward and turned his head side to side as if checking that no one was near. I wasn't sure why he was checking as I was pretty sure we were the only two people for miles.

Caleb turned to face me and he sighed relaxing his shoulders. He rolled his neck from side to side and it was making my anxiety climb even higher. I was beginning to second guess asking him to show me anything?

"What I am about to show you is something that very few... humans have ever seen." The way he emphasized humans was unsettling and I was beginning to think that his man was mentally ill.

Before I could say anything there was a snapping noise and I jumped thinking it was an animal near by. It was not an animal. Oh, how I wished it were an animal, a normal animal.

My eyes grew widen as I watched the man in front of me morph into an animal with thick dense sand blonde fur. Surely I was drugged to hallucinate such a beast as this. This had to be a figment of my imagination as I watched as a snout and glowing blue eyes replaced the once sharp features of Caleb.

The beast was a wolf, a massive wolf that stood at least five foot. I gulped taking a step back as I watched it come forward a few steps. The snaps of twigs sounded underneath its huge paws.

Run.

That was all that I could think of as I moved quickly through the forest. I stumbled over fallen logs and dense branches hearing the distinct paws behind me digging into the dirt. That exact sound was the only thing that kept me moving no matter how many times I scrapped and cut myself on the branches and bark of the forest.

My heart was pounding so hard against my chest as I tried to push myself to move faster and longer. If I made it back to the cabin I could lock it out. Whatever the hell it was.

I finally broke out of the forest and saw the yellow glow of the lights inside the cabin. A small amount of relief washed over me but it was soon gone as I heard a growl from behind me. I let out a choked sob as I ran on the gravel of the drive way hoping to reach the entrance before the wolf lunged at me.

As if hearing my thoughts he jumped in front of the front door making me skid on my heels. I quickly changed my direction heading towards the back of the cabin. I could barely see clearly as tears were brimming my eyes making my vision blur. The darkness of the night wasn't helping either as there was hardly any light for me to navigate around the cabin.

Coming around the back of the house the wolf leapt over the banister of the deck keeping me from entering the back door. He bared his teeth growling again as he moved towards me.

I backed away keeping my eyes securely on his every move. The sand color of his fur was catching any little light that the cabin was shinning making him glow in the night. As beautiful as he looked he was a monstrous size for an animal. I was backing away closer and closer to the lake.

What I had just witness couldn't possibly be true these were things straight out of a movie. This is real world stuff not a scene in Vampire Diaries. What I just saw should not have been able to happen, so how is this possible?

I was soon running out of space to go as my heel dipped slightly over the edge of the dock.

"Shit!" I crocked out feeling trapped. I couldn't swim and there was no where else to go. "Just kill me already." I snapped wanting my life to just be over with. I couldn't take the waiting anymore.

The wolf sat down and stared at me waiting patiently for me to make a move. What was happening? Was he waiting for me to move? Did he want to play with his food before he killed it? How sickening the thought made me.

I looked down at the lapping water. If he was going to torture me until I died than I would rather end my life on my own terms.

So I jumped... off the dock.
