《A Twist In Time》A Very Sirius Curse

The soft stroking of Tommy's fingers across my forehead was what woke me. I knew it was him without opening my eyes. I could feel it was him.

I didn't know how long he'd been there or how long I'd been asleep but I was content to just lie here with him next to me.

"I'm sorry," I muttered through my sleep-addled mind, not bothering to open my eyes. I didn't want to see the look of disappointment on his face.

"It's not your fault," he replied, leaning down and pressing a kiss to my head. I opened my eyes as he pulled away seeing the saddened look on his face. "Don't blame yourself."

"But if I had been more careful—"

"It's not your fault," he said, cutting me off. "Pol said early miscarriages are common. She said you were so early on in your pregnancy that if we didn't know you were pregnant you would have thought it was a heavy period." He cupped my face in his hands and gave a stern nod. "Don't blame yourself."

"Hmm." I was distracted but couldn't help but agree with what Polly had told him. I knew logically that Nora kicking me probably had nothing to do with my miscarriage. The baby would be so small that it shouldn't have been affected. If I thought about it, I was cramping that morning but thought nothing of it.

"Ada told me about Artie and Danny," Tommy added, interrupting my thoughts.

"They look like Arthur," I mumbled, pushing myself up into a sitting position and gently resting my hands on my stomach.

"I saw them." I had to wonder if he'd known they were Arthur's boys and had seen them scurrying about Small Heath. "In my dream," he added, causing me to raise my eyebrows at him. "They were older but it was them."

"Wait. Are you sure?" I asked, moving closer to him. If what he said was true then he was definitely having dreams of the future. "Have you had dreams like that before?"

"You mean dreams of the future that include two nephews I didn't even know were alive?" He shook his head and fiddled with a cigarette. "No ... well there was one dream about you..."

"I don't need to know about any sex dreams you have of me." I rolled my eyes going to move away from him when he took my hand in his preventing me from moving.

"No, it wasn't that. It was the night at the lake, the one from the cupboard. I dreamt about that when I was in France." He shrugged and let go of my hand, running it through his hair. "I didn't think anything of it until now. Every detail was exactly how it happened."

"I knew you and Polly were sensitive to the magic running through your blood. Perhaps I was right about my theories on squibs and the influence magic has on them," I muttered more of myself as I rose from the bed and started changing.

"Where are you going?"

"Downstairs to Artie and Danny. I promised Artie I'd let him make his decision about staying after dinner."

"Polly's been with them for the last three hours. I don't think she intends for them to leave whether they want that or not," he said, rising from his seat and sorting out the bed.

"They can stay here, right?" I asked him, afraid he'd not want them here. "Until we sort something out with Arthur of course. They can have the bigger bedroom and we can move TJ into it with them. He's getting too big for his cot now."

"They can stay here as long as they need."

When we arrived downstairs, Ada and Newt were arguing about who could make a better mug of hot chocolate and were each making two mugs each to try and impress Artie and Danny.

"What are you doing out of bed?" Polly asked once she noticed us enter the kitchen. She turned her accusing eyes onto Tommy, giving him a stern look. "I told you to keep her in bed."

"I'm fine, Polly, honestly, I need to keep my mind busy," I told her, smiling as I watched the two newest additions try and decide which hot chocolate they wanted to try first.

"Fine, okay," she grumbled, not looking impressed with my decision. "I spoke to Arthur, he didn't even know about them." At the scoff from Ada, Polly gave her usual pointed loo that had everyone shutting up on the receiving end. "He said Laura told him she terminated the pregnancy. She didn't want to see him for about a year after that which we now know was because she kept the baby. She started seeing Arthur on and off throughout the years leading up to the wart when she fell pregnant with Daniel. Arthur didn't know about the boys. Laura lied to him."

"Does he want to be a dad?" I asked, flicking my eyes to the boys and smiling slightly at the way Artie was trying not to let us know he was listening. "Does he want his boys?"

"Arthur's not the type to be a dad," Polly muttered, the anger in her voice. "He's not had the best role model and he doesn't have a fucking clue what he's ever doing, but he wants them."

"He does?" Why did Ada seem so shocked?

We had all seen Arthur with John's kids and he was amazing with TJ. He would be an amazing dad.

"Yes, he does. I've spoken with Arthur and we've both agreed that he's in no state to have the boys living with him, so they'll come to live with me and Finn."

"Pol, they can stay here," I told her, giving Tommy a glance so he would agree with me. "We've spoken about it, and Tommy has agreed to let them stay here."

Polly looked conflicted. I knew she thought it was her place to look after the family, but she didn't need to. She had a job and the last thing she needed was two young boys to look after.

"Look," Tommy started, tapping his cigarette on the dish in the centre of the table. "They can be under your direct care, Pol, but our house is open for them if they ever want to stay here with us."

"You've got more work coming up too with the recent wins in the races, you don't need the pressure of two little rascals added to that," I said, giving Arthur's boys a teasing smile. "I'm going to take a couple of weeks off from nursing to sort my head out and I would appreciate the company."

I didn't intend to guilt trip Polly into it, but my words had seemed to done that, reminding her of the baby I had lost a couple of hours ago.

"Alright, they can stay here throughout the day but I'll collect them after dinner so they can come home with me."

"Okay, that's amazing, but now we need to plan how we're going to introduce them to Arthur."

The next day started about the same as the previous day.

I woke up feeling like something bad was going to happen.

Tommy had already left for the day and I could hear TJ playing in his new room, muttering to himself as he clanged toys together.

Climbing out of bed, I slipped on my silk dressing gown and padded down the hall, looking in at TJ as he played with some bricks and little toy horses Tommy had gotten him.

"He's been up for about an hour," Ada muttered from where she was sorting through the little nursery, shifting some of TJ's old clothes into boxes. "Tommy asked me to clean out this room so you didn't have to dwell on it."

"I was only a couple of weeks pregnant Ada, looking at TJ's baby clothes isn't going to upset me," I told her, moving to help her. I paused as I looked into the crib and saw the cute dragon teddy Newt had gotten for TJ after meeting him. "We're all going to be happy one day, Ada."

She gave me a small frown as I left her and went back to my room to change. I needed to start this day with a positive attitude and not dwell on the depression I felt yesterday.

Once I was dressed, I headed downstairs where it seemed I was to be bombarded by Newt and Phineas. I rolled my eyes as they both jumped in their seats, trying to act as normal as possible.

"Why are you here?" I asked, turning to glare at them both, my arms crossed over my chest.

"I live here?" Newt said but it sounded more like a question. In his defence it was sort of true. Over the years, Newt had sort of moved into the house, having his own extended room off the parlour, but between his hours and travelling for work, it was hard to know if he truly lived here.

"And what's your excuse?" I asked Phin, curious to the look on his face as he suddenly burst into tears. "Okay?" I shared a look with Newt, who looked equally concerned for our elder adoptive brother.

"I'm sorry," Phin cried, rubbing at his eyes as he glanced at me and then at Newt. "Ada mentioned your miscarriage." He stifled some more sobs and I became utterly confused by his reaction.

"Everything is going to be okay, Phin," I told him, reaching over and placing a hand on his shoulder. I glanced at Newt and gave him a look to ask if he knew what was wrong with Phin.

"Eleanora's been cursed by my brother," Phin admitted, looking up from his hands and giving up a devastated look. "She's got months to live."

"What? Isn't there something we can do?" Eleanora was an amazing woman and she didn't deserve a cursed life which would result in death. "Phineas, there must be something we can do."

"I've looked into it and I even spoke to your healer friend, Longbottom or something, she said that Elea doesn't have long. It could be months but the curse is draining her quickly and it could only be a matter of weeks."

"Why would your brother do this? Don't answer that, I know why. Can I just ask which brother it was that cursed her?"

While it was alright to put the blame on Phineas' brother, he did in fact have three and I needed to know which one it was that cursed Elea. I just wanted to know which one of my great-grandfather's cursed my brother's wife.

"It was Sirius, that no good rotten dirt bag," Phineas hissed, his hands slamming on the table, making both me and Newt jump. "I'm going to kill him!"

"I don't think that's rational thinking, Phin. Look you're angry, you have the right to be, but perhaps put that anger into finding a cure for Elea, even if it's only going to give her an extra few months or years, at least it's something." I knew he wouldn't be happy with what I'd said but he needed to do something that wouldn't end up with him in Azkaban. He needed to be there for his great-nephew Sirius when he left the Black family in the 70s. "Look, I'm good at potions and spell work. Find me as much information as you can and I'll see if I can find a way to reverse the curse."

"Yeah?" He looked so hopeful that I almost felt pity for him.

"Phin, I said I'll have a look. I can't make any promises that I can help Elea. I'm not a master of the Dark Arts."

"Thank you, Romy, anything is helpful!" he shouted before apparating out of the house.

"I don't think I helped him," I muttered, glancing at Newt for reassurance. He gave a shrug while flicking through a book of curses I hadn't seen him get while I was talking to Phineas.
