《mamma mia | jeremy jordan》30. the part

Ana somehow made it through the workday with a hang over and less than 4 hours of sleep. By the end of it, she was ready to fall into bed and sleep the entire weekend away. She was going in the right direction with this idea, too, but she had been sleeping for only three hours when her phone began ringing.

She opened her bleary eyes and searched around for the device, which was somehow still sitting in the back pocket of her gray slacks. Ana read the name on the screen and sighed.

"Hello?" She tried to make her scratchy throat sound less than annoyed, but she couldn't help it.

"Hey," Ben cheerfully spoke from the other end. "Were you napping?"

"Uh," Ana rubbed at her eyes and pulled herself up to lean against her headboard, "yeah. But it's okay, I was just waking up."

Ben hummed in response, "That's good... What are your plans for this weekend?"

"Sleeping."

Ben chuckled, a loud sound that made Ana pull the phone away from her ear. "So, if I invited you to take a train to Pittsburgh overnight and meet up with my brother in the city, you would say no?"

Ana furrowed her eyebrows, wondering if she would be up to such a feat. "I don't know, Ben. I've had a very stressful two weeks at work and i was hoping to just relax this weekend. Could we do it next Saturday?"

She heard him scoff, but clear his throat to cover it up, "I understand. Tomorrow is actually his birthday, so I'm still going to go up to see him. We can, of course, go next weekend if you really want to."

"It's up to you."

A long silence rolled under the crackling noise in Ana's ear until Ben finally said, "Okay. I'll probably get home early Monday morning, so we can't do anything Sunday. Maybe we could get dinner on Monday?"

"Uh, we'll have to see because I have a photo shoot scheduled for 2 o'clock and it seems like it's going to be a long one," Ana was beginning to wake up more as the conversation went on, so she stood up and to take off her work clothes.

She was wrapping a bath towel around her body when Ben said, "Yeah, okay. Just call me when you want to see me again."

Ana opened her mouth to ask what he meant by what he said, but Ben hung up on her. She was too tired and stressed to deal with what would probably be an argument if she messaged him, so turned on Do Not Disturb, shuffled her music, and began filling up the bathtub.

Ana poured herself a large glass of water and set it on the ground beside the bathtub. When it was high enough, she dropped in a bath bomb and dipped her body into it.

Ana soaked in the tub for a while, long enough for her fingers to prune up, and then she stood and, while the water was draining, she did her usual routine.

There were goosebumps covering Ana's skin when she completely shut off the shower. She quickly wrapped her hair up in a towel and tied her robe around her waist.

Ana didn't know where Laura was: she barely remembered anything they had talked about last night, but there was a possibility that she had said she was going on a date. So, Ana kept her music playing as she walked around the apartment in her bathrobe.

Neither of them had had much time to do much of any chores for the past month, so the apartment wasn't in the absolute best shape. It wasn't a disgusting mess, but there were definitely a few dust bunnies behind the couch. So, Ana busted out the broom and mop and deep cleaned the floors.

Afterwards, when the floors dried, Ana put away the few dishes sitting in the sink. She wiped down the counters, folded back up the blanket she had used last night, cleaned out the coffee machine. Ana even looked through the fridge and threw out any expired foods.

When she was done, Ana plopped down onto the living room couch, crossed her legs on the coffee table, and put on a random movie from Netflix. Once again, her eyelids began shuttering close like the blinds of a window, steady and slow, and then all at once.

However, similar to earlier, she was interrupted- this time, by a knock on her door. Ana groaned, pouting like a child as she walked towards it. She peeped through the looking glass, having to stand on her toes to see, and saw Jeremy wringing his hands on her door step.

"Jer?" Ana softly spoke as she opened her door. She was worried because, based on the way he had been standing, he looked as if he were distraught about something or the other.

However, Jeremy grinned when Ana came into sight and he immediately stepped forward into her apartment. He shut the door behind him as Ana steadied herself on her feet.

"What's going on? What happened?" She questioned, tugging on the sleeve of her robe with anxiousness.

"I got it," he replied simply.

Ana furrowed her eyebrows, attempting to put together puzzle pieces in her mind which had frayed edges. "Got what? Typhoid? The yellow fever? Give me some context here, Jer."

"I got the part."

Of course. The part. The role he'd been talking about for a few weeks now. A supporting character in a new television show called Supergirl.

A character named Winn Schott.

"You got it!" Her eyes slowly widened with surprise as it all made sense in her mind. "Oh, my gosh, Jer!"

Ana threw her arms around Jeremy, rocking him side to side in a furiously excited manner. He laughed loudly in her ear, a sound filled with such relief and pride that Ana's eyes welled with tears.

She pulled away from the hug, but placed her hands on his shoulders. "I'm so damn proud of you, Jeremy! I knew you could do it!"

"It's all thanks to you," he sheepishly replied, holding gently to her waist.

"No, it's because of you," Ana insisted.

Jeremy shook his head, "You pulled me out of some of the darkest days of my entire life. And you barely even knew me! You barely knew my last name, let alone my habits and drinking problems! Yet, when you found me, knee deep in debt and sadness, you forced me to start changing for the better."

The tops of Ana's cheekbones tinted pink at his response, but she still brushed off the words with, "Well, they say you can't change a single person on your own. That person has to want to do it for themselves."

"I didn't do it for myself," he shrugged, lips pursed in a rueful air, "not at first."

Muddled, Ana's expression was narrow, "Who did you do it for?"

"I did it for you."

Jeremy's body seemed to move forward and this bemused Ana. Suddenly, she noticed his puckered lips and eyelids that shut over his sockets. Her pupils dilated to a dangerous size and Ana jumped out of his way.

Jeremy stumbled into the ghosted air of where Ana was standing and caught himself on the door frame that led to the kitchen.

"What are you doing?" Ana hugged herself in an attempt to hold all of her feelings inside of her butterfly-infested stomach.

Jeremy rectified his position with a huff, "Uh, I don't even know what I was doing there, just a moment ago. I guess I tripped on, on a, on a loose floorboard or- yes, a loose floorboard tilted forward under my foot and I fell. And when I fall I purse my lips because it helps me concentrate on not-"

"Jeremy," Ana interrupted, "I have a boyfriend. You know that. You know him, Ben, your best friend."

"Yeah," Jeremy blotted his forehead with his palm, "Yeah, I know. I'm sorry, Ana, I just got caught up in the moment there."

Ana dipped her head in an understanding way, "It's okay. Just don't let it happen again. I know I'm all attractive and stuff, but I'm currently involved with someone."

A few minutes later, after they exchanged some not-so-awkward conversation starters that ended in short responses, Ana escorted Jeremy out the door.

Before she closed it completely, she confidently told him, "Wait until I'm single again to kiss me, okay?"

"Wha-"
