《Red Feather (Hawks x Reader)》Sorry about the vibrator. By the way, KFC?

I was in the backroom of Spencer's to find a size up for this chubby cute girl. Yeah. So what she's an XL? It's not like the box for XL's is way out of my reach. Like on top of the shelves.
Goddamn it. Fuck me.
I huffed and dragged a ladder over. I could just tell her that we don't have anymore. I thought about it before climbing. No one would know. No, I work two full-time jobs for a reason. Yeah, it's rough but I like Spencer's and Subway more than I like homelessness, so.
my mind wandered to this morning when- Oh yeah! The second-ranked hero slept at my house.
After giving the sweet girl her XL dragon lingerie, I propped my head up on the desk and waited. Doesn't look like it's going to be a busy day. I mean, it's mostly just middle school and high school kids who shop here, and it's 11 in the morning so they're probably still in school.
I guess I could tune out of reality for a little bit. Hawks let me touch his wings and holy shit they were soft. Perfect too. I loved them. I returned his washed jacket and he offered to return mine too but I told him it was better if he kept it. I don't have wings after all and I'm too lazy to sew those slits back up.
Keigo, with his clothes in hand, took off the sweatshirt I gave him and held it out to return to me. I took it trying not to stare. He started to change into his previously soaked loose jeans, white tee shirt, and signature beige fuzzy jacket.
Oh! Yeah... I cut holes in the jacket. He should just have it.
"So do you always go out drinking or..." He smirked while putting on his shirt.
Not going to lie I stared. A lot. Holy shit. Nice muscles. I wonder how often he works out?
"No, I... I-Uhm. I don't usually", I scribbled on the small paper while trying to hide the fact my eyes still haven't left his torso.
His head poked out from the shirt and I quickly averted my eyes to the ceiling. Fuck I hope he didn't see that.
The look on his face didn't betray his thoughts, but I don't think he saw.I shoved the paper in the pocket of my maimed hoodie.
"Uh- you know what? I just realized that this won't do me much good with the holes in it. Take it as a gift for taking me home. Thanks again by the way, I don't know if I would've made it back here."
His smile remained on his face as he took the jacket. "Thanks, kid. It's a very nice hoodie. I'll hold on to it.Thanks for letting me sleep here. It was kind of cold but I'm glad you snuggled up to me. Such a cutie", he winked.
I let out a nervous chuckle.
He walked into the bathroom to change pants and left the sweat pants on the kitchen counter. Then he walked out to the balcony and took off. It really was a sight to see. His powerful wings beat and I was suddenly extremely jealous of drunk me.
The next few days were filled with waiting. Yep. He's not going to text me. There's no way he would.I pull out my phone and check for any new notifications. the only thing my phone told me was my storage is running low and Amazon wants me to shop.

The paper I stuffed in my- Keigo's jacket? It was a piece of paper with my number on it.
You're so impulsive oh my god I hope it fell out of the pocket so he doesn't see. But also please text me.
I once again put my phone in my pocket. Whatever. another voice interrupts my internal bitching.
"(Y/n) I need you to refill some of the... Uh... Toys." My coworker's voice rang from the other side of the shop. Megan is cool I guess but she gets in my business.
"You saw that they need to be done, you refill them."
She whined, "It's embarrassing. Please? I'll buy you Wretzles Pretzels?"
"But I was just back there. Wait Wretzles Pretzels? Fine. Which ones need to be replaced?"
"Bullet, unicorn vibrators, and the nipple clamps", she sang cheerfully, avoiding work.
Cringing, I headed into the backroom to grab the toys. I grabbed the reaching stick because I know for a fact that the bullet is placed higher than I could reach. Using my back to open the door with the lewd objects in my hands, I turned around and as soon as I looked up, I almost dropped everything when I saw who walked in.
You're fucking joking.
I took a deep sigh and closed my eyes hoping that when I opened them, it was just me going crazy. Not that I saw who I think I saw. When I opened them, I had no such luck. So I did what I thought would be best and hurried to the shelves to try to get rid of the things before having to go greet a certain winged person that just walked into an isle opposite of me.
It was practically a survival game, the way I was putting these things away. I was working as fast as my arms would let me put away 4 bullets, 3 unicorn vibrators, and 3 nipple clamps.
"The timing with this guy is just great", I mumble with clenched teeth, "Why didn't you just text?"
"Huh. I didn't know you would be so mad."
I jolted and whirled around, dropping one of the unicorns. We both looked down at it and back up before having a silence. Thankfully we both started laughing.
"Damn kid, didn't know you were into this kind of shit", he teased.
You would not believe how easy it was to put stuff in racks when you're not panicking as much. i was already caught.
"Oh hush. It's my job", I said as I put the remaining objects on the shelf, "Wait. How did you know I was here? How'd you get in here without getting recognized?"
He chuckled and handed me the vibe that was on the ground. I flushed and put it away. "Well kid, believe it or not, I do hero work for a living. Which means I have very good deductive skills. This also means that when your lanyard got stuck on the buttons of my jacket while you were checking out my wings, I saw that you worked at Spencer's and this is the only one that takes less than an hour to get to."
"Oh yeah. Sorry about that", I tried to relax but it was such an awkward moment.
He flicked my forehead with a grin, "Stop being so tense around me it makes me look shifty."
"Sorry-"
"Stop"
"Bu-"
"No need to be sorry. Oh! You know what", he pulled a small piece of paper out of his pocket, " I need you to help me out with something sweetheart."

I frowned, "What is it?"
"Now listen: this is top secret and very important."
My eyes widened a bit and I nodded.
He carefully unfolded the paper and turned it to me, point into a specific set of numbers on a paper.
"I think you were too busy staring at me change to write straight, but is this an eight or a six?"
I immediately looked from his eyes to the paper. It was the paper with my number on it. This wasn't a face blush, no. This went from my face to my neck.
"Ah-hah. Uhm i-its the- it's my number. It's a six though...Yeah", I shifted foot to foot, flustered.
Way to go (y/n).
He took out a pen and scribbled out the incomprehensible inkblot of a six to write a more legible one under it. Then pulled out his phone to, I can only guess, to put the number in.
"Hey, uh", I started. He looked up, "Can we please forget about this? I mean-" I cut myself off with a nervous chuckle, "please?"
"You were just doing your job. Unless... Could it be that you are into this stuff? Why are you acting so guilty hm?"
I swallowed hard.
"I- well..."
He stepped closer and I couldn't make my mouth or thoughts function so I did myself a favor and didn't say a word so I wouldn't say something stupid.
"No answer? Was I right?"
So apparently no words wasn't the right way to go but I still couldn't say anything. My face went pink at his inquiry.
He chuckled. "I'm sorry for teasing you, it's just-", he laughed a bit harder into his hand, "Oh it's so much fun." He tapped a little more on his phone and made a call and held up a finger to tell me to wait. My phone buzzed.
I raised a finger and pulled it out to look at the caller ID. Not a recognized number. He looked at me and said, "Huh. Be careful. Might be some creep."
I smirked and answered.
"Hello? "
He turned around and I heard a voice on the other end. "Hello? A cute girl gave me her number and I'm bored. So... Dinner?"
"Bored? Wow, what a charmer."
"Eh, I like to think so. Dinner or no?"
"Hm. Hard to tell. There's this really handsome customer. Might go with him."
"Oh? I bet I could take him."
"I don't know, man. He's pretty well built."
He broke character, "Oh you would know, wouldn't you?"
I hung up. "Oh, hush you're the one who just stripped down right then and there."
"Ouch. She hung up on me. If only I told her that I wanted to meet her at the KFC near here. Real shame."
He turned around. His head was slightly inclined but I could see the glint in his eyes.
"Yeah, Sucks", I responded, "KFC?"
"I'd love to. Around seven?"
I saw Megan walking up behind Keigo.
Ahhh shit.
"Hey (y/n)? Can you cover fo- Are you Hawks?"
He swiftly turned around to see who it was and saw her Hawks shirt. He smiled at her and said, "Yep! That's me. Wanna snag a picture cutie?"
She madly blushed and stuttered out a "Really? I'd love to!"
Cutie? Hm.
She handed him her phone so he could take the picture, but before he did he said, "I'll take the pic but you gotta let me sneak out. Deal? I don't want the world to know I'm here."
She nodded her head and hugged him to get in close while he snapped it. I couldn't help to notice that when he wrapped an arm around her waist, he left her hand off of her, palms open. After he left to go fight villains I looked over at Megan who was bubbly after the encounter.
"Oh my God he was in the store and he put his arm around me! Look!"
She shoved her phone to my face and I mustered the best smile I could, "Dude that's so cool. I should've grabbed a picture too."
"He's so hot-oh my god."
"So you need me to cover for you", i asked, changing the subject
"Oh! Yeah just for a second, I have a stomach ache and I might throw up."
"Gross. Go, I'll cover."
A few hours later I left work. And by a few hours I mean it's six o'clock. Nine hours of work. Need that overtime cash.
I opened my door and collapsed on my couch. I look over to the microwave and it's 6:30.
Get your ass up and get ready.
He called Megan 'cutie'. It doesn't bother me but do you think that maybe he just.. Ya know... is a womanizer? What if he just throws me out once he gets bored or finds someone prettier?
The thought bothered me a bit but I can't say I didn't think of it as soon as he asked me out. He's the number two hero. We met because I was too drunk to function and he saw me with my runny makeup and puffy face. And then there's the fact that he said he's bored while asking me out. And his eyes. Impossible to read and locked to the world. He let me see for a second. The loneliness. The vacant hurt. Like he was burning but was used to the pain? Then he shut me out again. Was it a warning? An invitation? A cry for help?
He also came to find me though. He went out of his way to come to see me then asked me on a date. He could've ignored it all. If he didn't want to see me he wouldn't have. You know what? Fuck it. I'm going to look my damn best and I'm going to rock this fucking date. Worst case scenario? I go on a date with the man I drool over. There's no losing here.
Talking myself up was the easy part. 15 minutes later I was sitting in the mall parking lot. It was five till so I started nervously speed walking to the KFC. when opening the doors, I didn't see paparazzi or fan girls,Or red wings. I took a deep breath and sat in a booth.
For thirty minutes.
At 7:45 I walked out. He wasn't coming. I could barely see the keyhole for my car through the tears as I tried uselessly to wipe them away. I didn't think of the scenario where he just wouldn't show up. stood up again 2 days in a row. My phone buzzed and I looked at my phone with blind anger.
A single message from an unsaved number.
I brought chicken wings home but they're damaged.
The hell?

Shadows in the Dawn Mist
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - Winner November 2020 When a young woman is lured back to her homeland for the opportunity of a life time, she must face old fears. But never would she think that facing up to her past would change everything. Is History written by the victors, or by someone or something else...? *** I started writing this a few years ago and eventually fell out of love with it. I never finished it and my newer books are being written in different writing style, and genre with a more planned process. I decided to revisit it for the writathon and found that it wasn't as hopeless as I'd come to think. Hopefully, I've improved as a writer since them so the consistency may vary. Its been good to revisit and analyse my writing which I feel used to have some clunky and obvious dialogue which I'm trying to fix. This will always be my first novel and I hope, with a little exposure, I may come to like it again. Thanks for reading!

Author’s disclaimer: Hey there this is my first novel so any criticism will be well taken though beware I’m a million-year-old monster who has cultivated the way of the sword to the peak. The daily life of a cultivation judge will be true to its name so it will be heavily on the slice of life lane with a bit of action here and there.Meaning we will see the life of Yang Qing when he clocks in and out. Hopefully, it will be one of those novels you read if you need to relax or are in a slacker mood like one of those otakus who listen to the noises of cicadas in the summer famously used in most animes. And it is in the slacker spirit that chapter release will be on Wednesday,Thursday and Friday. Sank yuuu Cover art by Conny Schneider on Unsplash
