《Keeping His Secret》We were never friends.

Somewhere after Noah's story I fell asleep, lying down on some cushions in the back of the library. The sound of a phone alarm woke me up and really sleepily I stretched out my limbs.

"What time is it?" I whispered.

"It's five." Noah replied, standing up and fixing the cushions back in place. "Come on." He held his hand out to me and only now I noticed his hoodie was thrown over me like a blanket and he was wearing a T-shirt that showed his scar traveled the whole way up his arm. I took hold of his hand and allowed him to pull me to my feet.

"Thanks." I said shyly as I handed him his hoodie back. He slipped it on immediately and I threw the cushions back to their original place.

"Emily?" Noah called softly. She tossed and turned in her sleep. "Em, we gotta get moving." He informed her gently. She sat up and rubbed her eyes. Her blonde hair stuck up messily around her face but she smiled kindly at me as soon as she spotted me.

"You stayed." She muttered in disbelief, throwing her arms around my waist and squeezing me tightly.

"Grab your doll Em, let's go." Noah said. I didn't miss the way he looked at me. He lacked confidence in me completely.

He brought us to the canteen and started cooking eggs, sausages and toast in the school kitchen. It felt weird, being here but he knew where everything was kept and how everything worked like he had done this before. Emily sat playing with her doll on one of the dining tables and through the windows we could see the first hint of daylight.

"I'm not so sure about you." He admitted as he looked longingly at Emily through the kitchen serving window. He rolled the sausages around on the grill making sure each side was golden in colour.

"We hardly know each other." I pointed out. "Trust is earned, I know you were forced into telling me the truth but in time you'll see that I'm not a threat to you or Emily."

He dished the food up on three plates and grabbed some cutlery from a tray. He handed me one and then carried two over to where Emily was sitting.

"I have had my trust misplaced before, you know?" He whispered as we got closer to Emily.

"Your girlfriend." I confirmed with a nod.

"Shh." He frowned as we took our seat at the table. "Here you go, eat up Em." She smiled warmly at her breakfast and then started eating. It was delicious, Noah was an even better cook than my mom but then again my mom had staff make our meals for years before she attempted to cook for herself.

After we finished he rinsed our plates clean and held Emily's hand to the bathrooms. Automatically he followed her into the girls bathroom and she stood looking into the mirror with Noah standing behind her. Rehearsed like a routine.

"This is the girls bathroom." I pointed out, they both looked at me through the reflective glass, disbelief and amusement on their faces.

"I steal things, I break in and enter, I'm involved in fraud but you have a problem with me being in the girls bathroom?" Emily giggled to herself and I just smiled back realising how stupid I sounded.

Noah took a hair brush out of his back pocket and started gathering up Emily's hair awkwardly. He looked like he had no clue what he was doing. He scooped it all back into a low pony and tied the hair tie, giving himself a swift nod for getting the job done.

"Can I do it?" I asked them both. Emily looked at me through the mirror but Noah actually turned to face me with surprise written all over his face.

"Yes please Mia." Emily pulled on the bobble and yanked it out. She pushed Noah aside and he looked a little confused and hurt which made me feel bad.

"Who is your favorite Disney princess?" I asked her.

"Elsa." She replied instantaneously, she didn't need to think about it. I smiled at her response and then very gently I brushed her hair and french braided it to the side just like Elsa. Noah watched on from the sidelines with interest, trying to work out the method my hands were using but I don't think he could quite keep up.

"Wow, Mia! I look so pretty." She beamed back at herself in the mirror and Noah's eyebrows frowned.

"You always look pretty." I ran my finger down her braid and swished the bottom.

"Teeth Emily." Noah said, sounding a little cold. I stood back and watched as he helped her brush her teeth, giving them a clean himself first and then handing her the toothbrush so she could finish the job off. He handed her clothes and she took herself into one of the bathroom stalls only returning when she was fully dressed.

Noah dumped her pajamas in his locker and took out a bag, he handed her a sheet of paper and told her it was her homework. We walked to one of the classrooms together and climbed out of the window. I wasn't sure if this was the moment I should have left but I didn't. I continued walking with them both, Emily holding my hand, skipping beside me and telling me all about her friends and her teachers. I listened and I laughed along with her but the whole time I was conscious of how quiet Noah was being.

"Can you pick me up tonight Mia?" Emily sweetly asked. I awkwardly looked at Noah. He sighed discretely and then knelt down to her level.

"Mia is very busy, she isn't like us. Her family have money so she has a home, besides her boyfriend wouldn't be happy with her hanging out with us every night. This was a one time deal Em." My brow furrowed at him but I bit my tongue, not releasing what was on my mind. His prejudice upset me, his words hurt.

"Oh." She said sadly, as if even at five years old she understood that money was an invisible line that automatically made people worlds apart.

We pulled up at the elementary school and Emily ran over to her friends straight away, waving goodbye to us at the door. We watched her for a few minutes. She flicked her hair around showing it off proudly and then disappeared into the building leaving Noah and I completely alone.

"I'm sorry for overstepping with the hair thing." I uttered nervously. Noah ran his fingers through his brown strands, messing it up in the cutest way.

"She can't get attached to you." He replied impassively. His tone threw me off, I felt like he was mad at me. "You're not always going to be there." He added.

I nodded my head reluctantly, what more could I say? He clearly thought so little of me.

"Listen, I gotta go to work. If you see me around school later you can't talk to me. I don't want anyone connecting the dots. From now on, just go about your business and I will go about mine."

"We can't be friends?" I asked feeling a little disappointed. I was keeping the biggest secret of his life but he couldn't even give me friendship.

"We were never friends Mia. I can't have people thinking you're close to me. They'll start asking you things, creating gossip everywhere. I need to keep people as far away from the truth as possible and you're part of that truth now."

"Fine." I spat out furiously and started walking away from him quickly. I half expected him to grab me back and apologize but he didn't.

He just let me walk away.
