《Two Existentialists | S.R.》67

I have risen from the dead to write this chapter. Basically, this past semester hit me like a truck and between working 30 hours a week and taking an 18-credit course load and working out every day, I decided to switch career paths and apply to medical school.

Yeah, you read that right. I decided to ditch the PhD idea and apply to medical school and had to study for the godforsaken MCAT (which I took a few weeks ago) and have been working on my application ever since.

Anyway, I know no one cares that much about my personal life being so scrambled it could be eggs. Happy reading!

You shook your head, smiling at your daughter as she ran towards you, tripping over her feet. It was the twins first birthday and Spencer insisted on throwing a making it a big thing. So you threw a huge party in your house, your new house.

You had just moved into a big house, one that was 3 down from David Rossi's. You told Spencer it was ridiculous but he insisted. Said he wanted his kids to have a yard to play in and family nearby. You smiled at the way he phrased it. The BAU was his family, and by proxy, yours. And you were glad he had them.

You had the bare essentials unpacked but nothing else. Between work and cases, you and Spencer were never home. The twins had the sweetest nanny but you weren't about to have her unpack your dishes.

And today, the twins birthday. Spencer had been bothering you for weeks to make it a big thing. You were happy he was so involved but also wanted to strangle him because he was a little too obsessed. But, what marriage doesn't have a little bit of subtle murderous tendencies.

Spencer came outside to where you were fixing the cookie table. You turned and saw your son in his arms, wearing a tiny bow tie, which was Spencer's choice. "Oh look at my handsome boy," you said, opening your arms. Spencer placed Lee into them, kissing your forehead.

"I do clean up pretty nice," he teased.

"Mr. 187, you got jokes?"

Spencer laughed and laced his arms around you, leaning down to your ear. "It's Doctor," he whispered, biting your earlobe before walking away. You watched him go, a mild blush rushing up your cheeks. It had been 4 years since you'd met and he still gave you butterflies.

-

Rossi arrived first, being that he lived 3 doors down. He handed you two envelopes. "Just a little something."

"Don't tell me you bought them a country," you teased.

"That's reserved for their 16th birthday Y/N," he replied, kissing your cheek. "Now, where are those little ones, I missed them."

"Spencer has Lee and I believe Diana or my mom has Annabel. They're in the living room."

Five minutes later, JJ and Will arrived with Henry and Michael. Hotch was right behind them, carrying Jack in on his shoulders. "How are they already one?" JJ asked, shaking her head.

"I can't believe it either."

"Just wait, one day they'll be so big you'll forget they were every that small," Hotch added.

"Thanks Aaron, very reassuring."

"Sorry," he muttered, going to find Spencer.

Emily came through the back door, scaring you. You screamed, almost dropping Annabel as she did. "Emily!"

"I'm so sorry. I didn't realize you were holding this little angel," she apologized. You shook your head, offering her Annabel.

"It's fine, now that my heart rate has surpassed 150, I can skip cardio for the day."

"Brilliant, I'll do it more often," she teased as she went to mingle with everyone else.

Penelope and Morgan were the last to arrive, carrying two ginormous gift bags. You shook your head at her as you wrapped her in a hug. "Stop spoiling my children."

"Never," she muttered, going over to Emily and stealing Annabel from her arms. You smiled, Spencer meeting your eyes and raising his eyebrows at the gifts in your hands.

He walked over to you and snagged them from your hands, placing them in the corner of the living room with the rest of the gifts. "Our kids aren't going to ever be bored are they?" Spencer asked.

"Not if we keep these people around," you joked.

"Hey! You're stuck with us," Morgan called out. Everyone laughed as you joined them, sitting next to Spencer, who wrapped his arm around your waist.

"We wouldn't have it any other way," you said as you pinched Lee's cheek.

You went upstairs as the party died down, looking for the present you had bought a few days ago for Henry. You walked into your closet, reaching up for the box on the shelf. As you were pulling it down, another box came crashing onto the floor. You sighed and leant down to pick everything up.

You rushed to clean up the mess but ended up sitting down, looking at the contents. Spencer appeared behind you, leaning in the doorway. "Pretty girl?"

You turned and smiled at him, a single tear rolling down your left cheek. "Sorry, I got occupied. I'll be down in a minute."

"What's that?" He asked, crouching down next to you, pointing at the paper in your hand.

"Ok, don't laugh, but it's the chopstick wrapper from our second date," you said softly. Spencer grinned, kissing the top of your head.

"Why would I laugh?"

"I don't know, because it's dumb to keep these things?"

"It's not Y/N. What else do you have?" He asked, sitting down behind you. You leaned into his arms, placing the box in your lap.

You smiled, showing him the various things you'd kept as memories over the years. "Here's a remainder of the flowers you got me for our first real date," you said holding up a pressed flower. "Here's the ticket for the trip I took to Detroit to surprise you, and here's the Paris one."

"The first Harry Potter book?" He asked, looking at the small novel.

"From Christmas. And this is the menu from that Indian place," you explained, holding up the paper.

Spencer was quiet, picking at the little memories. "A visitor badge?" He asked again.

"From when you taught me how to shoot a gun."

"You kept all of these things?"

"Of course, it's our story Spence. It's how we fell in love," you whispered. Spencer kissed you softly, pulling away so he was still inches from you.

"Thank you for loving me so much."

You shook your head, standing up and pulling him with you. "You thank me as if it's a chore. Now come on, we have company and I'm sure they have already noticed our absence."

-

You tucked the babies into their cribs, ruffling Lee's hair. You went to turn on the lamp in the corner of the room but the lightbulb sparked and went out.

"Spence?" You called, as you unscrewed the bulb.

"Hmm?" He replied, walking into the room.

"Lightbulb went out, will you help me change it?" you asked, turning and giving him a smile as you held it in your hand.

"It take two to change a lightbulb?" he asked, his features faintly visible in the dim light from the streetlamp just outside.

"Yeah. One to change the light bulb," you whispered, placing your hand on his chest.

Spencer grinned**, looking down at you and caressing your cheek. "and one to observe how it symbolizes an incandescent beacon of subjectivity in a netherworld of cosmic nothingness," he finished, leaning down and placing a kiss on your lips.

And there you stood: two hearts, two souls, two doctors, two existentialists.

- the end

It's done, it's over, I can't believe it. I hope you have enjoyed this story as much as I enjoyed writing it. This truly kept me sane during this pandemic. Thank you again for all the love and laughs and comments and crazy reading list names. I am so happy I made the decision to begin this and cannot began to explain how lucky I was to have so many people enjoy the little bit of creativity I had during this crazy year. I love you all, thanks again.
