《Two Existentialists | S.R.》66

Hello all, sorry again for being gone for so long. This semester in school is legitimately the worst of my life. I have grossly overcommitted myself and I am regretting it. Basically, I wish I had Spencer's brain right about now.

To clear up questions about the last chapter, here's an explanation. I honestly didn't want to write any more trauma but TLDR: Cat escapes prison and goes to shoot Y/N to get back at Spencer (I imagine the scene similar to Savanna's outside the hospital). Anyway, Y/N dives out of the way (Cat didn't actually want to hurt her since she's pregnant, just enough to scare Spencer and hurt him so she used blanks). Y/N ends up going into emergency surgery and having the twins early, but one of them (Annabel) is more premature than her twin brother Lee. That's pretty much it.

You towered over the crib, your finger tightly clasped by a little hand. "Look at her little fingers," you whispered, looking over at Spencer, who held your sleeping son in his arms.

"Ah fingers, medical terminology is phalanges. Did you know phalanges is Greek in origin, denoting a body of Macedonian infantry?" He said with a smile. You rolled your eyes, returning your attention to your daughter.

"It's ok Lee, you'll use this knowledge when you become a doctor one day." Diana said, popping up behind you. You turned and smiled, lifting Annabel and placing her in Diana's arms. "And this little angel will probably be president. Or maybe develop the first hover car. Who knows?"

"Little early for career paths, isn't it mom?" Spencer asked, looking up, his hair falling in his face.

"You were four when you decided on your PhD in mathematics, it's never too early," Diana retorted.

You giggled, watching Spencer scrunch up his face in defeat**. He placed Lee down in his crib and scooped you up. "You're going to get it," he threatened making you laugh even more. He carried you out of the room, leaving Diana with the babies momentarily. She had been doing better and you had convinced her to transfer to a facility closer to D.C. for Spencer's sake. He would never admit it but he missed her.

"Alright, alright, put me down," you retorted, hitting his shoulder. He smiled and placed you down, keeping and arm around your waist. Spencer leaned down to place a kiss on your lips but stopped as he heard the doorbell ring. He pulled away and squeezed your arm before running down the steps.

"Babe?" He called from the door. You frowned,

"Spence?" You asked, reaching the front door. He turned and you saw a blonde girl in the doorway. "JJ? What happened?"

She looked at you and smiled softly. "You've been asked to testify against Cat," she said, handing you a stack of papers. You furrowed your eyebrows, looking at her in confusion before turning your attention to the papers.

"I'll do it," you said, looking up and meeting her eyes.

"Y/N," Spencer protested but you didn't listen.

"I'm doing it S. I need to. I want her to rot in jail for the rest of her life. And I want her to know who put her in there."

"Very well," he muttered, kissing your forehead before disappearing up the stairs.

"Y/N, are you sure?" JJ asked, biting her lip.

"I have to do it. For my babies," you said, making her nod. She understood, she was a mother.

-

"Mrs. Reid, what happened on August 4th?"

You bit your lip, taking a deep breath. "I went in for an appointment with my OB. I was in the parking lot, getting something out of my car and all of a sudden, my car's back window shattered."

"What do you mean shattered?"

"I mean, she," you said, leaning forward and pointing at the girl in the orange jumpsuit, "shot at my car's window. And then, she shot again, and again."

"How are you so sure it was my client?"

"How am I so sure? Who else shoots at a pregnant woman in a hospital parking lot?"

"Let's control our emotions now Mrs. Reid," the man said making you scoff. You turned your head and looked at the judge who pursed her lips and crossed her arms. Even she knew that was not a smart thing to say.

"Ah yes, of course, you are correct. I'm sure you would also be able to control your emotions if someone shot at you and caused you to go into early labor where you had to have emergency surgery. And not only that, but your newborns had to spend time in the NICU and get surgeries that would never be needed otherwise. But of course, I need to control my emotions," you stated, raising an eyebrow.

You looked over at Spencer who had a smirk on his face. You returned to face the attorney and pursed your lips. "And, Mr. Lytton, it's Dr. Y/L/N. I have a doctorate."

The attorney took a step back as the entire jury began whispering. You looked up and locked eyes with the woman who made your blood boil, watching her smile turn into a scowl.

The judge banged the gavel, quieting the room. "Mr. Lytton, do you have any more questions for the witness?"

"No, I suppose it's all settled."

"Alright, the prosecutor is free to cross."

You watched as they stood up, a blank look on their face. "One question, why would Ms. Adams attack you?"

"Frankly, I don't know. We should ask her that, because maybe, just maybe, it'll clear up her insanity."

The prosecutor shook his head, a smile appearing. "Thank you Dr. Y/L/N. We really appreciate your help."

You smiled at him, standing up and walking back to your seat adjacent to Spencer. You sat down and he leaned over, whispering in your ear. "Dr. Y/L/N, I'm so proud of you."

You bit your lip, squeezing his hand. "I'm so thankful to have you," you replied, leaning against him. His thumb lightly grazed your hand, rubbing back and forth soothingly.

-

Three days later you were sitting in the same place, awaiting the jury's decision. You gripped Spencer's hand, your knuckles turning white. He leaned over and kissed the top of your head. The head juror stood up and took a breath. "We have decided the defendant is guilty on all charges," she announced.

"Ms. Catherine Adam's, you are sentenced to life without parole in a level 5 prison," the judge announced, banging the gavel. JJ reached forward and squeezed your shoulder.

You let go of the breath you were holding, standing up as the courtroom began to whisper. You made your way to the front, and reached Cat, a smile on your face as you leaned over the wood barrier.

"Oh look, someone's happy at my demise," she said, scoffing at you.

"You are a wretched woman and you got what you deserved," you stated, crossing your arms.

"You think me in jail will keep you safe?" She taunted as she was taken away. "I got away once, who's to say it won't happen again?"

"You don't scare me. Besides, I have one thing you'll never have," you shouted after her.

"And what is that?" She asked, stopping in her tracks, the guard turning and looking at her in confusion.

"Him," you replied, turning and looking at Spencer who was talking with the rest of the team. "Have fun rotting in prison," you said with a fake smile as you turned and walked away, lacing your fingers with Spencer's.

"Have you gotten your closure?" Spencer asked, pulling you closer.

You leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I'm so happy this is over," you whispered. "Now we can just worry about if Lee will become a doctor or an artist."

Spencer laughed, holding the door open for you as you left the building. "Is it bad I'm leaning towards doctor?"

You shook your head, pulling him down for a kiss. "Nope. Another Dr. Reid. Sounds perfect to me."
