《Steam of Britain》Chapter 48: A Super Rescue

The work load was getting pretty heavy at King's Cross, and the engines were getting worked off their wheels. Soon, a preserved diesel was brought in to help out. He was blue, had yellow ends, and had the number D199 on his sides.

He worked hard, and the engines appreciated the help, but not his attitude. "I don't see why you all are still in service," he said, "I have been working on this railway just fine. You all must be getting old. Besides, steam engines spoil a diesel's image." The roundhouse was filled with angry whistles, and Harold said, "OF COURSE WE DO!!!! We show what frauds you are!! If you break down, you care nothing for your train!! You just wail for a fitter! We bring it home on one cylinder!!" "NOTHING," said the diesel, "Ever happens to us." "Yeah, tell that to the engines of Sodor," said Duchess, "they've told me all about you. You broke down on your first day, and was sent away after Henry rescued you!" "A one time thing," said the diesel. "What ever Spamcan," said Duchess. "How rude!" said Spamcan. "You asked for it!" said Daniel, "Now shut up!! And go to sleep!!"

The next day, Evening Star was heading back tender first. Her regulator had failed, and it couldn't be fixed until she arrived back at King's Cross. "I'm a failed engine," she said, "Maybe I should've become museum piece, like I was originally built for." "Nonsense!" said her driver, "It could've happened to anyone!" Evening Star wasn't so sure. She then saw Spamcan sitting at a signal, and she thought, OH great! Just what I need, a diesel to laugh at me!!! Just then, the guard from the break van came and said, "FOR PITY'S SAKE, TAKE SPAMCAN AWAY!! HE'S FAILED, DANIEL IS FILLING IN FOR JOHN ON THE COMMUTER TRAINS, AND ALL HE DOES IS WAIL FOR A FITTER!!" "Oh, not you t-" "SHUT UP!!" said the guard, "Or I'll see to it that you're on the scrap heap!!" Spamcan then shut up.

Evening Star then coupled up to Spamcan, and Daniel rattled by. He was soon having some troubles of his own. He had a new driver, and he was inexperienced. He never listened to advice, and thought they had enough fuel to make it to the next station. But he was very wrong. Soon, Daniel stopped, just at the top of a hill. Evening Star was coming up the line, and the guard from the Commuter Train came running down the hill. "Daniel never had a chance to refuel. His driver is a stupid one alright. We need you to push him to the next station." "Oh dear," said Evening Star, "I don't know if that will work. But I'll give it my all!"

Soon, she was coupled up to the train, and everything was ready. Evening Star heaved, she pushed, and pulled! Her wheels slipped, but soon she had the train moving!! Daniel was very proud of Evening Star! Engines passing by watched in amazement, and cheered Evening Star on! "Go on Star!!" said Steve, "Go on!!" Soon, they reached the next station, and Evening Star was completely out of puff. Daniel was uncoupled, and taken to the fuel pump. Alison, who was nearby, took over the commuter train, and Daniel took over her goods. He pulled Evening Star and Spamcan back to King's Cross. There, the railway board had some choice words for him. "We don't know WHY we decided to have you help here, given your track record on Sodor." Spamcan looked at his buffers. He was then towed away by Rattler, all the way back to York. Soon, Evening Star was the talk for the next year. Soon, a railtour was coming, and Mallard and Silver Link were excited to see the engine.
