《Steam of Britain》Chapter 41: Mallard's Anniversary

Mallard was being cleaned and polished. He was to pull a railtour in honor of the 50th anniversary of his record in 1938. City of Truro was right next to him, and said, "I'm proud of you," he said, "Even if you're not a GWR engine, you still made steam proud everywhere." Mallard smiled, "Our rivalries are a thing of the past. We now work together, no matter how different we are." Mallard then headed to the station.

At the station, Crovan, Max, and Rattler were arranging many coaches, and people from all over the country and world had come to see Mallard. When he backed down on the coaches, the people cheered for him. "I see that you're gonna take a railtour," said Duchess. "Yes I am!" said Mallard. "Well, how would you like a second tender? Oh wait, that's a box van!" Mallard was not happy to have one of his most embarrassing moments brought back up during his anniversary. Soon, the guard blew his whistle, and Mallard pulled out of the station

Mallard raced down the line, and he went through stations, whistling to everyone he passed. He loved racing down at high speeds. While he couldn't go as fast as his record, he was still going fast down the line. Steve whistled back to him.

He stopped at a signal, and had to let another train pass through first. He saw the diesels smile at him, and honk a hello. At the end of the line, he was surrounded by people with cameras. "It's the world's fastest steam engine!!!" cried one fan. Just then, a large diesel came up, and looked at Mallard. "Pah," he said, "fastest in the world? Can't even go over 130 mph. I practical go 130 on average every day." "Stop it Drake!" said the other diesel, "I know we're friends, but you need to show respect for the steam engines!" "What for?" Just then, a fan threw his drink right on Drake's face. He was soon met with many angry rants from the passengers. "DIRTY DIESELS!!!/UNGRATEFUL S___!/THIS IS WHY PEOPLE PREFER STEAM OVER DIESELS!!!" Soon, Mallard had blown his whistle, and yelled, "QUIET!!!!!" He then looked at the diesel, and said, "You know, you diesels think that you're invincible, but you're not. You may not have many accidents, but that doesn't mean that you'll break down at some point. I've seen too many engines get too big for their buffers, and then have an accident. Just know, you are new, but that doesn't mean you're instantly the best." The guard blew his whistle, and Mallard headed back to King's Cross.

Mallard was resting, when he saw the diesels coming to the platform, and one uncoupled from the coaches. He then rolled up to Mallard, and parked right next to him. Mallard looked at him with a nasty glare, and Drake looked at him with sorrow. "I-----I'm sorry for what I said." Mallard looked at him, and smiled, "It's alright. You know, you remind me of my early days as a prime express engine." "Really?" asked Drake. "Yes, I was snooty, arrogant, and very bossy. It was only through my Doncaster Cousin, Flying Scotsman, who talked some sense into me. I soon learned that just because your fast and strong, you're not the most useful instantly. What really makes an engine really useful is experience. Take Trooper and Bertram for example. They were around before even the LNER, LMS, GWR, and SR were even formed!" "My," said Drake, "If you need someone whose an old sage, then you must go to them." Mallard laughed, "Yes, indeed we do. You know, Bertram was once a prime express engine, and passed his wisdom down to Scotsman, and he passed it to me." "I guess the railways will always pass their wisdom to the next generation," said Drake. The two engines talked long into the day, until it was time for Drake to leave. "Goodbye Mallard. And thank you. Thank you for making the railways what they are today."

In the sheds, Drake and his friend, Sally, were talking with the other high speed diesels. "So, how rusty were the steam engines?" asked one. Drake spoke only kind words of Mallard, and how he helped show him that speed isn't everything. While many were not happy that he's now listening to steam engines, Sally is happy that Mallard had given Drake some sense.
