《Steam of Britain》Chapter 39: Australia

Flying Scotsman is a very famous steam engine. He often pulls the express from King's Cross to Edinburg. He was the first to have gone 100mph on record, pulled the first non-stop express, and even toured America. While he can be puffed up in the smoke box, he can be a kind hearted engine as well, and a wise engine who knows what to do when someone needs to be the big engine.

One day, Mallard was heading back after pulling the Elizabethan. He was enjoying the wind in his face. He then saw Duchess pull up along side him. "Hello Slow Coach," said Duchess, "Wanna race?" "Why? I can beat you easily," said Mallard. "Don't be so sure," said Duchess. The two engines then raced down the line at high speeds. Bertram saw them, and said, "SLOW DOWN!!! THERE ARE WORKMEN REPAIRING THE TRACKS AHEAD!!!" Duchess heard Bertram and applied her breaks, but Mallard didn't hear him. "MALLARD!! THE TRACKS!!!!!" Mallard looked ahead, and applied his brakes!!! But it was too late. The workmen and crew jumped clear, and Mallard came off the rails, and into a pile of dirt. "Are you alright Mallard!?!" asked Duchess. "I think so," said Mallard.

When Harold brought the cranes, Mallard's side was shown, and it wasn't good. His paint was scratched up, his valance and boiler were dented badly, and his coupling rods were snapped. He needed a large overhaul to be repaired.

That night in the sheds, the engines talked about Mallard's accident. The shed master then came in. "Now, as you are aware, Mallard has had an accident. And he will be in the works for two months. Meanwhile, we have received a call from Australia. They wanted Mallard to take place in the Aus Steam Celebration. But due to the accident, he is unavailable." "Oh sir!" said Duchess, "May I take his place?!" "Duchess, you're part of the reason Mallard is even in the works." Duchess then looked down at her buffers. "So, when told this, they then asked for the next engine they thought of: Flying Scotsman." The engines whispered to each other. "What will happen?" asked Max, "What if he gets stranded there like he did in America?" "Don't worry," said the shed master, "Bill McAlpin helped to fund both the shipping and return trips so that there will be no repeats of history." The engines were now excited.

Scotsman looked at the sea, and felt nervous. "Are you okay Scotsman?" asked Alison, as she pulled up along side him. "Yes, it's just......" he paused, "I don't know about this. I've just been so busy here, and it feels like I just got back from America." "if you don't want to go, then don't Scotsman," said Barrow. "No," said Scotsman, "I have done this before, and I will represent Britain for the greater good." Soon, the engines had all said their goodbyes, and Scotsman was sent off to the Australian outback. The engines soon worked harder. Another engine was called to help with the Flying Scotsman for the time being. As for the Elizabethan, Barrow took it. The engine on the Flying Scotsman, was a very unique engine indeed, or rather, engines.
