《Steam of Britain》Chapter 38: Quarry vs Coal

Archibald the Woodhead Electric Diesel was currently in an argument with Harold. They were arguing over what business mine was more important. "The Quarry!" said Archibald. "The Coal Mine!" said Harold. "Not all engines use coal!" "No, but many people use it around the world!" "Quarry dust is important to creating things like glass!!" Trooper then came in, and rang his bell. "What is going on?!" "Trooper," said Harold, "tell this battery on wheels that the coal mine is the most important mining industry!" Trooper then said, "The Quarry AND Coal Mine are both equally important: They both haul minerals that are needed by society!" Trooper then went off in a huff.

For the rest of the week, the two engines would glare at each other, and throw insults at each other. This was starting to annoy the other engines in the fleet. Around the same time, the miners at both quarry and coal mine started to go on strike. This also started to bring a fuel shortage for the steam engines. Soon, Trooper, Max, Jack, and the diesels were the only engines running. Now a days, there was only a wagon full of coal. The tender engines were bored out of their minds as they sat in the sheds. There were no new stories that they could tell. Archibald often teased Harold for being stuck, only to get an earful from Bertram. Soon, Archibald was stuck shunting in the yards. They quarry workers had stopped working, and the dust and stone was now dried up for now. The coal was still coming, but slowly.

"It's not fair!!" said Archibald, "The quarry has completely stopped working, but some coal workers are working!!" "I don't know," said his driver, "I heard that the last few workers today had just announced that they themselves are going on strike as well." Archibald was happy that soon the coal would stop. But then he remembered that it was needed for the steam engines to work as well.

Harold had been shut up for days. He was still cleaned along with the other engines. Soon, the coal had dried up so much, that the diesels were now worked off their wheels. Scotsman, Arron, and Steve needed new cab windows. But they were low on materials. "So, why can't they just buy new ones from the store?" asked Harold. "Because the cab windows of an engine are usually made of tough quarry dust," said Trooper. "Quarry dust is used for making windows?" "Yes," said Mallard, "it can even be used in some building materials, like bricks, tiles, and even concrete." Harold now felt bad for calling the dust useless.

As for Archibald, he had almost over heated due to all the rushing around the yard. He was now resting in the shade of a shed, and Diesel 10 came up to him. "I heard what happened with you and Harold," he said, "I know how that can be. I would often argue with other diesels about what kind of trains were the most important. I'd say express, others would say freight, but soon, I learned that all trains are essential to the railway. Just like a quarry and coal mine are."

Soon, Norvin came with a huge supply of coal, and the hopper was refilled. He and Rattler helped get the steam engines out of the round house, and under the shoot. The steam engines were soon fired up, and they were producing steam very well. Harold then puffed up to Archibald, and said, "I'm sorry that I said all that stuff about the quarry." "And I'm sorry that I said all the things about the coal mine. It was my fault we argued so much." "No, no, it was my fault, I started the whole thing." "No, it was me who started it. I was being arrogant." "Steamies are not arrogant!!" "I WAS THE ONE WHO FIRST STARTED THE DEBATE, SO I CAUSED IT!!" Soon, the two had started arguing over who started the debate. "Oh boy," said Perry to Jack, "Here we go again."
