《Steam of Britain》Chapter 35: Flying Scotsman's Trucks

Trucks are essential to the railways. They carry all sorts of goods. There are open top trucks that carry things like coal, stone, and quarry dust.

Some are used for liquids, like milk, oil, and water.

Others are for holding special boxed items, like crates, and can even be refrigerated for frozen items.

And some that hold things that can't be covered and need to be put on a flat surface.

The engines really don't entirely like trucks, but know that they are essentially to the railway. One day, Flying Scotsman was called to help Henry, Evening Star, Donald, Douglas, Arron, Steve, Barrow and Alison with heavy goods. "Disgraceful!!" he said, "one of Sir Nigel Gresley's finest locomotives designs pulling a goods train!!" "Well, you can't always get coaches," said Thomas. Scotsman just scoffed, "Well, I just don't think that A1's like myself should not pull dirty goods trains!"

Soon, Flying Scotsman had a train of coal trucks, with some lumber, and oil tankers. He soon headed off to Brendom Bay. All the way there, Scotsman had a frown on his face, and muttered under his breath. The other engines all laughed at him. "If he's related to Gordon, do you think he's miserable?" asked Perry to Duck. "Yes indeed," said Duck.

Soon, Scotsman was out in the open country side, and he soon smiled. He and Gordon would never admit it, but they secretly liked pulling trucks. It got them away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, and into the peaceful countrysides. The trucks actually liked the two big engines as well. They knew that they would only get bumped if they misbehaved.

Scotsman's first goods train was a coal train during WWII. He went down it, but he soon started to admire the scenery he saw as he went down the line. He even talked with the trucks a few times during the run. It was then that he started to like goods trains in secret.

He soon arrived at Brendom Bay, and he put on an angry face. He saw Edward there, and he asked, "Did you enjoy the run?" "No," snapped Scotsman, "these things just held me back!" He then winked at the trucks when Edward went to shunt them away. On the way home, he said, "It was actually very nice. I do love getting away from passengers who complain about being late." His driver and fireman laughed, "We knew you'd have some grudge against them!" So, he puffed back to Tidmouth, and he was happy to have had a good run.
