《Whodunnit? Murder On Mystery Mountain》16 Kiss Of Death

"Cole? Can you hear me?" Brooklyn leaned down to the man laying in front of her. He was lying in a pool of blood in his room, coughing profusely. Sherman was sobbing beside her. "I watched him. He shouldn't have done it!" Beside him, Audrey grabbed his arm and pulled him up. "Calm down. Tell us what happened." The room was full of the staff, the only one missing was Sage who had stormed off and no one had seen her since.
Giles and Calvin were feeling the potentially dead man's pulse. "He has one!" Giles announced. Everyone in the room sighed in relief. Lana leaned down to caress his cheek. "Cole?" She looked at Sherman. "What happened?" Lana couldn't understand why she was being so defensive but she liked Cole and this was horrific. Sherman finally dried his eyes.
"I was watching him. He was in his cabin. I know it's creepy. He was doing something strange. Holding a knife. I assumed he was the killer. He brought the knife to his chest and I couldn't believe it. He was trying to stab himself. I rushed in and tried to stop it but he was already laying a pool of blood. That's when I found you." He looked over at Phillip, Jericho, and Zayne.
Calvin sighed. "Well, there's nothing you could've done." He grabbed his wife's hand. "Go find the first aid kit." Summer was up and running without hesitation. Greer glared at Sherman. "How do we know you didn't make this whole thing up and you actually stabbed him?" Sherman looked up. "Why would I tell you all of this then?" He stared dead in her eye. "Is this your attempt at framing me killer."
The tension in the room was suffocating.

Finally, Giles stood up. "Everyone please get dressed for dinner. We will meet in the Big House. I know this is very distressing but Cole will be just fine." He didn't believe his own words but the game had to continue or the consequences would be dire, he knew that much. There was of course, the matter of the cases needing to be stated. "Before you meet for dinner. You will state your cases of how you think Trinity was murdered. You will do this by standing in front of your mirrors and speaking your mind."

The killer was in hysterics. Each employee at Camp Redwood had stated their cases and each one had a guess who the killer was. Audrey believed the killer was Greer. Greer believed the killer was Sherman. Sherman believed the killer was Ethan. Ethan believed the killer was Sherman. Zayne believed the killer was Sage. Sage believed the killer was Jaclyn. Jaclyn believed the killer was Greer. Summer believed the killer was Phillip. Phillip believed the killer was Sherman. Jericho believed the killer was Brooklyn. Brooklyn believed the killer was Jaclyn. Calvin believed the killer was Ethan.
Cole never got to make his case. He had not recovered and he never would. The killer smirked as they moved into the room where Cole was sleeping. In a matter of minutes, the morphine the killer had slipped into Cole's coffee would take its effects. They had known Cole was going to pull some sort of stunt from that very morning.
The last thing the surfer saw before he clutched his heart in agony, was the killer's smirking face. "It's you!" He tried to choke out their name but as his life slipped away, Cole became weaker and weaker, until his heart stopped. The killer kissed his cheek lightly and strutted out of the room.

The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]
