《Cars to Humans》Chapter 10: The Dang Black Box

(Lightning's POV)
"Wait, you dreamed of the place your friend was at?" asked Mr. Spark.
We were sitting in his office and discussing my weird dream from the night before. Mater had woken up earlier and had joined me in this meeting I was having with Mr. Spark.
"Yes sir. It was so weird. When Mater explained where you found him, it sounded exactly like my dream. Word for word. I don't know how or why that happened." I explained.
Mr. Spark nodded. He seemed to be thinking very hard until he spoke. "How did the two of you get transported here?"
I looked confused,"Why does it matter?" I asked.
Mr. Spark continued,"Well, there are different ways to get transported to the human world. You could have been exposed to some nuclear waste, or a portal even. Sometimes people transport here by dreaming. The only one that's a problem is the dang black box."
I perked up,"Black box?"
"Yes. That rotten thing. This small box is a rare case in which it sends people to the human world. They are hard to find nowadays, so I'm sure you two weren't involved with it."
Mater and I shared a panicked glance. Mr. Spark noticed and his eyes went wide. "Oh no...".
"Oh no what? Tell me Mr. Spark!" I yelled.
Mr. Spark looked up and sighed. "Look, here's the deal. I have two important things to tell you, so listen carefully. First, Mater was never injected with the syringe from the HIA. This means you both can get home easily. Second, getting you home easily has now gone down the drain. This is going to take many more tests and fluid samples to ensure you're healthy enough. As for you, Mr. McQueen, the dream you had is a side affect of the box. The box can sometimes give people weird talents, and yours is, basically, seeing into other people's situations through the dream world."

I sighed,"Okay. I guess. What are the tests?"
"Mostly blood samples and checking your internal organs. We will also have to do a couple CAT-scans and MRI'S. If you or your organs are showing any kind of struggle, we have to keep you here longer. Until you are fully healthy, you must stay here."
I nodded. This made sense, but I just wanted to get home. If only we had never gone and investigated that bathroom. None of this would have happened.
After a few more minutes of talking with Mr. Spark, Mater and I headed towards my room. When they found Mater, they put another bed into my room so we could both be together. I wasn't going to risk us getting separated again.
I was walking along until I, accidentally, bumped into Scarlet. She fell and papers flew throughout the hall. I instantly started helping her pick up the papers.
"Oh! Scarlet, I'm so sorry. I wasn't paying attention." I said, apologetically.
"No, I'm sorry. I should have moved out of the way." Scarlet said, stifling a chuckle.
We finished picking up the papers, and I helped her to her feet. She smiled and was about to walk away before I stopped her.
"Scarlet."
"Yes?"
"I just...I wanted to-to say...um...I'm sorry." I finally managed to say.
She looked at me, startled. "For what?"
"For rudely yelling at you yesterday. I'm terribly sorry. It was unnecessary and uncalled for. I'm sorry."
She smiled. "I accept your apology. I'm really surprised. Most men wouldn't have the guts to say sorry to a woman, and I really wasn't expecting you to even apologize. Either way, I'm happy you did. Thank you."
I smiled and she smiled back. "I guess I'll see you later, Scarlet." I said.

She nodded and turned to walk away. Before she made it to the end of the hall, she turned around and said, "Have a nice day....Lightning."
She winked and walked around the corner and out of sight. I could only smile. For once, someone, besides Mater, had actually called me by my name. Not mister nor sir. It felt good.
I walked, happily, to my room and found Mater laying on his bed. He looked up when I entered. I walked to my bed and sat. Mater sat up and seemed to be lost in thought, until he finally spoke. "Now what?"
I shrugged. "I don't know. We have a few tests that need to be done in about an hour. We could wait in here till then. "
Mater nodded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Alright, McQueen, this will only hurt a second."
I was in the medical department of the SIA. I was dressed in a hospital gown and sitting on the medical bed. I was getting a shot to help my organs develop faster. Apparently, when I had my first tests done, the results came back incorrect, so I was still unfit to go home. Mater's organs were also underdeveloped, and he was having tests done in the room next to mine.
After the nurse gave me the final shot, for today, I had to get some X-rays done. They X-rayed ever bone in my body before I could finally leave the medical room.
I was now sitting in the waiting room, waiting patiently for my results. A few minutes went by and, finally, a nurse came out and called my name. I followed her to a medical office, where Mr. Spark was waiting. He smiled as I entered and sat across from him.
"Mr. McQueen, the test results are getting better. Most of your bones are healthy and fit, except for your hip bones and some ribs. Those usually take longer to develop anyways, so your normal on that part. Your blood is good and healthy, and your organs are developing smoothly. Your friend also has very similar results. You two will be good to go in no time."
I sighed a sigh of relief. I would soon be home. Nothing was going to get in my way. Not even the stupid HIA.
Someday, he might even – hatch? “CHEEP!?” Things to Know: -Cheep!? Will release on a minimum weekly schedule. -After a backlog of chapters, posting will slow, but in the interim you can expect a chapter a day up until roughly 25 chapters. -This story at times will potentially carry some heavy moments, but the tone is intended to be lighter overall. -There are invisible game-like elements in this story, but nothing so concrete as a dedicated gamelit novel. -I personally have some issues with anxiety, so I may or may not interact with the community a lot. I'll try if anyone has questions, but I can't guarantee that it'll be consistent. -MC is a non-human lead, and will never actually become human. Romance will potentially happen between side-characters, but not with the MC. -MC IS NOT THE ONLY VIEW POINT. I have to put that out there because people sometimes hate alternate PoV's in a story. None of them will be filler, and they'll be there only to give a little bit more nuance and meaning to the world that the MC has stepped in, or is about to be imminently important. I'll try to keep them down, but this also helps to prevent me from burning out getting trapped in one view. -Most of all, I hope that this story is enjoyable to you, and that you have a great time reading it! -Written by Michael Adams, Cowritten/Edited by Summer Kent
