《Winter Wonderland》The Schemer of the Scalding Sands: part 13

"Good work, Jade and angelfish" Azul praised. "Did you guys have your 'talk' with Kalim?" he asked.
The Octavinelle and Amaryllis trio had returned to the vacant room and changed into their pajamas for bed before they started this conversation, each giving one another privacy.
"Yes, sir/ yes, Azul" Jade and Y/n nodded. "It was just what you and angelfish had expected. It's likely that Kalim is being magically mind-controlled by someone who is making him do these things" Jade informed them.
"Mind control?!" Yuuna and Grim gasped, flinching at the terrifying power.
"This rings a bell for me..." Yuuna said, sitting up straighter on her bed when she realized the subject was more serious than it seems.
"Is that even possible?" asked Grim.
"You know how Ruggie has magic that manipulates the body? There's also hypnosis magic that takes control of a target's mind" Jade informed. "But it requires a far high degree of skill and magical power than its bodily counterpart. Which means very few magicians are capable of using it"
"Unless your like Angelfish. You gotta have skills and power on par with Azul to even be able to use hypnosis. Hypnosis magic is child's play for Angelfish here" Floyd laughed.
"Fufu. It's true. But Hypnosis is under the category of both dark and black magic. Mortals can either train to learn it for dark magic. But for black magic, you need a human sacrifice to receive dark hypnosis magic, which is even dangerous for mortals" Y/n explained.
"As my angelfish said" Azul nodded in agreement. "But even I could be hard-pressed to control living creatures with their own egos like humans" he added.
"But I don't think anybody in Scarabia is half as good as you, Azul. In fact, no one in the entire school is near Y/n's level" Grim said. "Even their own housewarden Kalim's big signature spell is just a glorified waterspout. And their vice housewarden Jamil was sayin' he got fives across the board outta the ten-level grading scale.

"Now there's a deeper story to that..." Y/n mumbled. "Jamil is not as he seems. He's the type to wear different masks"
"I agree with my angelfish" Azul smiled. "You know what they say- a clever hawk hides its talons"
"So who's mind-controllin' Sea Otter, and why?" Floyd asked, wondering who it could be.
"I'm afraid I couldn't get any answers there" Jade admitted.
"You guys couldn't figure it out? Even with your signature spell, Jade?" Floyd asked in shock.
"It was kinda weird. Even if I was just there to keep a look-out" Y/n admitted.
"Wait wait wait" Grim intervened. "Come to think of it, we've never seen Jade's signature spell. What's it do?" Grim asked.
"Floyd, what have I told you about blurting out the details about my signature spell in the presence of others?" Jade asked, narrowing his eyes at his twin.
"I don't see the harm in disclosing this to Yuuna and Grim, actually" Azul said. "Angelfish already knew about it. Knowing a signature spell's function wouldn't make a magic-bereft human any more susceptible to it than they already are"
"So it's harmless 'cause WE'RE harmless. Great. That makes me feel waaay better. Tch..." Grim huffed.
"Please tell us, Jade-senpai! I'm too curious!" Yuuna begged, having her hands together.
Jade let out a sigh. "Well, if I must. My unique power is one that would make most people guarded around me if they knew what it did. So I'm not a fan of revealing it, but...My signature spell is called Shock the Heart. It can be used once, and only once on a target to make them tell the truth"
"Myah?!" Grim gasped, his eyes widened. "So they wouldn't be able to lie?!"
"Mind you, it can only be used once against a given target" Y/n replied.

"I'm surprised you knew the functions of that, angelfish," Jade said, quite shocked about her knowing his spell. "Once I use one on someone, I can never use it on them again. And if often doesn't work at all on people highly resistant to magic or wary types like Angelfish and Azul"
"True..." Y/n chuckled.
"It works great on guys who're cowerin' in fear or bawlin' like babies, though" Floyd added.
"Heh heh heh" Jade chuckled. "So it does"
"The way they smile scares the daylights outta me" Grim shivered.
"Same..." Yuuna shuddered as well.
"Fufu" Y/n chuckled a bit.
"Anyway, Kalim has always been the type to open up to others" Jade informed. "Thus, my spell worked on him flawlessly."
"Yet even so..." Y/n continued.
Flashback start
"That's it, look in my left eye..." Jade said as Kalim complied.
"...Huh?" Kalim's face then turned blank, as his eyes changed into a foggy color.
Y/n who was watching their interaction used magic to keep a look out of their surroundings. If someone who near, she would tell Jade, so he can stop his spell in time.
"I'm going to ask you some questions, and you will answer them honestly." Jade commanded. "Do you know the name of the student using hypnosis magic on you?"
"I do" Kalim relied in a monotone.
"And what is his name?" asked Jade.
"I..." Kalim started off. "can't say" he answered.
"...what?" Y/n and Jade were surprised but if seemed that Y/n was less surprise than Jade, since she knew what was going to happen.
"I must never tell anyone" Kalim admitted. "I made a promise long ago. So I can't say"
"Hm...I see" Jade nodded. "All right" he then deactivated his unique magic.
"Huh? Wha?" Kalim shook his head, going back to normal. "What was I just-"
"Thank you, Kalim" Jade said in a polite manner. "You're helped clear the air a great deal" Y/n said as well.
"I-I have?" Kalim asked, looking confused. "I don't know what you're talking about, but, uh, I'm glad you're satisfied!"
'Way to look at the bright side of life' Kusanali cheered.
'mhm' Y/n displayed a friendly smile.
"Indeed we are. my friend" Jade smiled.
Flashback End
"...And that's the story" Jade concluded.
"Ha ha ha!" Azul laughed. "Hilarious. Your signature spell was thwarted by Kalim's strength of character"
"As much as I hate to admit it, that is an accurate assessment" Jade sighed in defeat.
"And here I thought Sea Otter would sing like a canary" Floyd pouted. "Just when you think you know a guy!"
"It must have been a promise he keep close to his heart" Y/n said, crossing her arms over her chest. "Such a loyal mortal" she grinned.
"Heh...Yet that same unwavering conviction had laid bare the truth behind the unrest in Scarabia" Azul said, adjusting his glasses. "All that's left now are the finishing touches. It's time to catch the culprit by the tail and pull him out of the sand where he's lurking. I have a plan." Azul stated.
"Frist..."

Runicka: Tournament of Monsters (A GameLit Card Game Fantasy)
The runes are changing, and with it, the game itself changes. Taygion Ardwella finds himself stranded, alone, and on the run from some very determined guards who claim Tay's stolen from them. They're right, but that shouldn't mean Tay has to give back what he took. He's only been in Stormwall for a week and already, he's earning the ire of the most powerful and notorious House that controls the city's underground. And when their scion challenges Tay to a duel of cards, Tay will find himself thrust into a game of sorcery and strategy as he attempts to both find a way out of this mess and find his own way in the world. To do both, he'll need to learn to accept guidance and coaching where it's sorely needed, craft a deck of unimaginable power, and not die whenever his opponents try and cheat him out of a hard-earn victory. But not all is as it seems in the shadows of Stormwall, and if Tay can figure out the importance of what it is he's stolen, he may just have a chance at saving the game of Runicka. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Runicka: Tournament of Monsters is a high fantasy, card game-based adventure novel with enough magic, worldbuilding, and characters to fill a Sanderson series. I would consider it a part of the GameLit subgenre. This series in particular is not an isekai, and will start and end in a high fantasy setting complete with its own lore and backstory. It is a progression fantasy, and I am writing it inspired by all the Yu-Gi-Oh mangas/animes, and all the hours I've invested/wasted (depending on who you ask) playing TCGs like Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a work in progress. In your journey through Stormwall alongside Tay, you'll probably find typos, grammatical errors, and maybe a confusing sentence every once in a while (although I hope to keep these to a minimum). That said, comments and suggestions on where I can improve are not only encouraged but greatly appreciated. And finally, expect new chapters every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**Currently on a small hiatus. I have a bit of a workplace crisis going on. I'm still writing, but I don't have time to polish and publish. Chapters will return on a regular basis soon though!!**
