Katsuki was always close to his father. He and his father were close for many reasons. One being because they both were victims of Mitsuki's wrath. She wasn't always a bad mother.. or that is what Katsuki likes to believe.. his little shred of hope. She was an alcoholic who promised to get better and never did. One day Masaru had enough of watching Mitsuki hurt Katsuki by her actions, so Masaru and Katsuki decided no longer associating with her would be the best for both of them. This led to them being there for eachother as a single dad and growing son.
Katsuki's early childhood is something he either can't remember or tries to forget, so Masaru tried his hardest to make up for all the years of tears and pain that happened. And it was them two against the world.
Then UA.
Katsuki was off to change the world. Save those who are less than lucky. While there he makes some of the best friends somebody could ever ask for. Why does Masaru know this? Because Katsuki comes from school happy as can be talking about his friends. Despite the angry kid most would associate Katsuki with, he did act differently depending on who he spoke to.
And once dorms became a thing, Katsuki was distraught. The choice to stay home or have a dorm. To stay with the old man or his friends. In the end he chose his friends and slowly stopped visiting. Katsuki had always slightly disliked Masaru, even if they were close and had the strongest father son bond to exist Katsuki did blame Masaru for staying with his mother for so long, for forgiving her for certain things and not leaving sooner. Which was completely understandable, somtimes people do stupid things, to Masaru and Katsuki though, this was more than stupid. This did cause a few fights between then two, and one of the reasons Katsuki chose the dorms as they had a fight that day about Mitsuki as she had messaged Katsuki. Mitsuki had sold her phone during a drunken frenzy, so she had to get a new one and Katsuki does not believe that she would have remembered his number.

Now Katsuki won't answer his phone, no more visits... probably never crossed his mind that his father even exists. Which is okay, whatever makes Katsuki happy, Masaru is okay with it.
Only bad thing is Masaru had fallen ill recently, and due to his fear of doctors, ignored it until it got so bad he had to be hospitalized. Masaru tried to contact Katsuki as much as possible but he was able to even reach three rings before hearing the beep. It got so bad that Masaru didn't even have the strength to pick up the phone to try to contact Katsuki.
Once that began happening the hospital stepped in, gave him his due date as if he was good about to expire... and when that date got close a phone call was made by the hospital. Note, Masaru had not spoken to Katsuki in years. No contact at all.. and as much as it pained Masaru, he wanted Katsuki to thrive without his failures he likes to call parents dragging him behind.
When the phone call was made Katsuki had picked up, and as much as Masaru wanted to take that phone and say, "I'm sorry." One last time, he was unable. He wasn't really aware what happened after that, was his son coming or not he wasn't sure.. but Masaru is okay dying knowing his son is happy.
Masaru's head was pounding and his body ached, and he waited. For what can be up for interpretation. Somebody did come, a couple of them.
They introduced themselves and Katsuki's friends. Turns out Katsuki was pretty far from where Masaru was hospitalized so he got his friends to go as they were able to reach it faster as he tried to make it there as fast as possible.
Masaru was happy to hear that his son still cared even if he had every reason to not. Apparently his son sobbed over the phone, Masaru isn't sure what the hospital told Katsuki but it must have been some terrible news to get his son to cry.

KatsukiMs were nice, they introduced themselves and Kaminari Denki, Sero Hanta, Kirishima Eijiro and finally, Ashido Mina. They seemed like a great group, ones who would protect Katsuki, be there for him for things that Mitsuki and Masaru fell short of. That's how Masaru felt.
Masaru enjoyed his last bit of time getting to know his son's best friends who will be companions for as long as possible as they claim. Now even if Katsuki was not able to reach the hospital in time, Masaru just wanted Katsuki to know that he was sorry.
