《Bite or Howl》Chapter 22

"Mommy, what's happening?" Catherine and I look out the window, eager to see the chaos outside. Catherine grunts and moves back, dragging the table with her hands and pulling it under the window. She dusts her hands on her dress then climbs onto the table, making her twice as tall as she normally is. Now my eyesight is just on her shoulder when I look over to her. There was a loud bombing sound that awoke us from our sleep, disturbing our peaceful slumber against our sheets and dragging us to the nearest window. Our mother's footsteps slowly come closer as she paces to find us. The night sky that was once midnight black has been lit up with fireworks. Red and orange flares being shot up into the sky with loud booming sounds.
"Mommy, there are fireworks!" Catherine exclaims, looking back at our mother that had appeared beside us. She points out into the sky and smiles eagerly. My mother makes a confused face then takes another step forward, locating herself behind us to get a view of the so called fireworks that's being held at 2 in the morning. But when her gaze meets them, her face is the absolute opposite of Catherine's.
I hear her mutter something then bringing her hands to her mouth. "Oh gosh." She mumbles. I had never seen my mother so shocked before. She'd always been such a beautiful woman with long locks that were stained a dark brown. Her skin was so pale and smooth but when she cried, it grew a tint of pink and her eyes screamed red underneath her white skin. "Come now, go back to bed." She stutters, picking up Catherine and dragging me along with her. She holds Catherine up by her right hand and holds mine with her left.
After that day, I remember waking up to shouting every morning. Pots clanging and making a huge noisy clatter. My mother would always scream and beg for mercy. But I never knew what from. My father had been out most of the time, fighting alongside my uncle. But when he'd come home, he'd go straight to bed. Tired and exhausted. But now from the fight. The fact he knew he was doing something wrong yet still being tied up to do it.
I never knew that my father had killed millions of innocent people alongside my uncle Cassius. It broke me when I found out. I always wanted to make him proud. My mother always told me, "I'm proud of you, my son." But the one person I really wanted to hear it from never said it. Nor did I ever see him until he'd taken over the kingdom. After my father had ruled, my mother's smile had slowly started to appear on her face again. Her skin had turned pale and her eyes were no longer red. She was happy. But my father never told me he was proud of me.

"I need extra people going around and collecting every single person in the city. No one is to be left behind, do I make myself clear?" The guards in front of me nod. I dismiss them with my hand and they start marching towards the exit that leads them to the north side of Mount Verona. "I need men around the castle as well. Someone had been killed and I need you all to run errands everywhere." I instruct the next group of people. They nod and walk out, splitting into groups as they roam the castle. Goddamnit, I think to myself. I could be saving so much time if I weren't doing this. It wasn't my job to go around instructing guards. It was Nick's.

But now wasn't the time to think about Nick or his commitments. Right now, I needed to get to the borders. I walk over to the front of the castle, anticipating what I would face in the next hour once the creatures arrive. The black witches are powerful, they don't bear the mercy us vampires do. But in a time of war, I doubt anyone ever does.
But as I neared the tall metal front doors of the castle, I halted in my tracks. The red carpet underneath me that rolled from the door to the front stairs was cold underneath my shoe's sole. I could feel the uneasiness of the vibe around me. Something in my gut told me to turn back but I knew better than to fleet from danger. So I stepped closer. The door was in eye's reach but I couldn't see clearly to make out what was making me feel so eerie. So I continued to come closer.
I was in a few metres range from the door and it was fully visible. A figure stood in front of the door while leaning against it, its right foot bent upwards so its shoe's sole was placed flat against the door. The figure held a coin in its hand, flipping it upwards. Its head tilted up as its eyes followed the coin spinning in mid-air before catching it with its hand. "It's funny how the entire city is being guarded with billions of men while the castle doors are right open. Inviting a werewolf like me to come waltzing in." He says with a hint of harshness in his tone. Felix.
"What's up, brother in-law?" He snickers. I grit back my teeth and slowly take steps back, my arm lingering behind me and reaching for something to grasp on. Felix catches on to my actions and laughs slowly. "Don't try anything, sneaky." He says in his iconic deep voice. So husky yet filled with such threat and rage. "No one can come to your rescue." He states, hinting to the atmosphere. I look around, taking in the room around us. The large hall we stand in has a huge bubble around it. Almost transparent yet semi-visible. It hovers around us, barely touching the high ceiling and making its way down to the ground, blocking any way for escape. "What have you done?" I ask him. He takes a step forward, pushing himself off of the door by the momentum his foot gives. "Black witches are such great people to befriend."
I bite the inside of my mouth in anger, sucking in my cheeks and laying my tongue on my palate. I can feel the anger burning inside of me, slowly burning into my eyes and making them rage. "Aw, Chase is getting mad I see?" Felix coos. I shake my head slowly. "What do you want, Felix?" I ask through gritted teeth. Felix chuckles and lets out a small laugh. "What can someone do to get a small conversation with you? Gosh." He jokes. But I don't let another word come out of him. Because I lunge forward and push him to the ground. He follows and falls down on his back. His face is shocked by my actions. Both my legs circle him, keeping him down. He grins and looks up at me. "Kind of funny how you can really push me down just like they do in the movies. I used to think they wer-"

But I don't let him finish. I punch him right in the face. My fist hits him right around the eye socket area, so my knuckles mostly hit bone. It hurts me more than it has the right to, mainly because I'm the one starting this mess. His head tilts to the right where I'd hit it but it doesn't knock any teeth out or make him spit out blood. Which is honestly, disappointing.
I get off of him and stand up, looking down at him. I expect him to be grunting in pain but he only smirks again, bringing himself up on his elbows. He sits up, his crisp white shirt crumpled. "That's seriously all you've got?" He snickers smugly. The rage inside me only burns harder and the black aura that's kept inside of me slowly seeps out, surrounding me. He starts to get up but I don't let him do so. I leap forward once again, bringing both my hands on his collar. His eyebrows scrunch together. "Alright then. No talking coming from you but hey, that's okay. Let's fight instead." His free hand hits me straight in the stomach. I stumble back but manage to stay on top of him. I swear, it felt like he'd cut right through me and broke through my spinal cord. But I don't let him see that.
His back arches and his bones snap straight. For a moment I get scared, thinking he's about to explode in my face. Then the same scene from the dinner happened; his skin started to grow thick as it was slowly being covered in snow white fur. His canines started to show, his teeth sharp and white. It shocked me on how sharp they were, one bite and you'd be ripped apart. His nose comes outwards, barely touching mine and his ears shoot up, edges just as sharp as his teeth. His eyes grow larger into dark black orbs and his claws come through from his hands and they rip into my shirt, and slowly seep into my skin. They dig deep into my chest and I can feel the burn of them. He then plays along with the pain he's giving me, twirling his claws inside of me and making me sting in agony. I squint my face as the pain slowly thickens, the blood staining my white shirt and Felix's fur. His hands keep clawing onto every part of my body, ripping my thighs and arms.
His hits and scratches only make my anger rise. My adrenaline builds up in my body and I can practically hear the warning tick tocks of my brain telling me I'm a bomb about to explode. I keep my hands on his collar, one hand slipping out every now and again to get a few punches out of him. But then my rage takes over me. I feel my burning aura change from black to red. A dark crimson colored dust surrounds me that burns my skin. It lingers on Felix and I can see him struggle. I look up and see the tall door just in front of me and I slowly start to get an idea. With a small smirk, my grip tightens around his collar in a choking position. I hear him gag against it while my other hand leaves his body and stays beside me. "Buckle up." I whisper into his ear.
My body shoots forward at an unbearing speed going straight forward and Felix hits head first onto the metal door. He howls in pain while my triumph brings a smirk on my face. But I was only getting started. With the metal door against his head, I get up onto my knees, bringing the grip on his neck along with me. His breathing pitches and I can see the struggle in his eyes. Slowly, I hover upwards, bringing myself up into the air and dragging him along with me. His head drags against the metal door as he slowly weakens.
With one last bit of his energy, he slowly shifts back into his original form, his fur seeps into his skin and his face deforms back to his human one. I keep banging his head against the door, my mercy no longer existent. The blood from his head stains his blonde hair and crimson liquid drizzles down one of his nostrils. He grows weaker by the second but I feel him slowly fighting back. His hands grip onto my shirt while his eyes slowly grow weak.
I let go of his collar and dropped him on the floor. Taking a step back, I admired the physical pain I'd caused him. With remaining power, I lunge forward for a final hit. I leap into him with all my strength but he raises his hand, stopping me. I push harder, the aura around me growing a thick red and pushing itself to break the shield Felix had made for himself. It grows smaller until I'm almost on top of him. I almost break it before Felix suddenly stops.
He brings his mouth close to my ear and whispers, "Do you hear that?" His eyes are drowsy and his breathing is slowing. He's tired and in pain. I looked at him, my eyebrows scrunched in confusion. Felix lets out one more small chuckle. So weak and silent, it can barely be heard. Then, leaning against the door, he slowly started to pull himself up. But as he did so, the cuts and scratches that I'd given him slowly started to heal and his energy started to grow back. It was as if he were untouched.
He laughs down at me before saying in his husky, dark voice, "It's the sound of our dear sisters screaming in my dungeon."
