《Bite or Howl》Chapter 12

"You're smiley today." I tell her as she slowly approaches me. I watch her walk down the stairs of the cabin house, her hair moving from side to side as she descends on the steps. When she reaches the bottom, she runs forward to me, crashing her body against mine. Her arms circle my neck, holding on to me as if she won't ever let go. "Geez girl." I say in surprise.
She leans forward and plants a kiss on my lips. It's sweet and short but just enough to make my mind shortcut. "I missed you." She pouts. "Darling, I saw you five minutes ago." She laughs in response. Nick closes the door to the cabin and slowly makes his way down, slower than Phoebe, catching on our moment. "I'm glad you finally see us as what we are." I tell her. She looks up at me, confused. "A couple. True mates. Destined to be together." I fill in. She smiles again and leans forward, my nose touching hers. "'I was born to be with you."
When we're in the car, I look out into the distance. Nick fixed up the car so we can finally see outside. I suddenly don't feel so blind anymore. I look over at Phoebe who's looking out her window, watching as the trees we pass quickly move by as the car moves faster. I lean over and lay my hand over her lap. "Are you okay?" I ask her.
She turns her gaze from the window to me. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"After what happened yesterday." I reply, quietly. Her face drops down, revealing an unreadable expression. "I was scared. But you were there. So I'm okay." She explains. "I should've helped you sooner. Before that monster got to you I started to ramble, kicking myself. "Chase, you already helped me. I'm okay, see?" She motions to herself, looking down at her body. I smile and move over, bringing her body closer to mine. Her head lays on my lap as I stroke her hair. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you quicker."
The car stops a few moments later and I hear the click of a door as Nick steps out. He knocks on our door before opening it. "Your highnesses, You're welcome to stay here while I scavenge the area for any intruders. Right now, it should be safe." A few guards from behind him go around, arming the car. "Thank you, Nick." He takes off his black sunglasses and looks down at us before shouting to the guards, "Let's go!" Then shutting the door behind him.
When he leaves, I turn my attention to Phoebe. "I have a lot to talk to you about." I tell her. She moves off my lap and sits up. "What's wrong?"
"Phoebe, there are a lot of things wrong." I smile weakly, tracing my thumb over the back of her hand. "Phoebe, my mother came to me in a vision last night. She promised me that when she passed, she'd visit me in my dreams, but this one, it was a nightmare." I start.
"She warned me that I needed to wed you as soon as possible. There needed to be a king because the vampires must prepare as something terrible would happen. I'm not quite sure what but there is. There's a mole in the castle. An inside. Someone spying on us and giving information to other people, putting us all in danger. I think that's what those people in black cloaks were doing in the white witches clan. They were black witches. And I fear that they will do the same thing they did to them, to us."She shakes her head in disbelief. "Who? And who are they giving the information to? What information?" She asks.

"I don't know, my love. I'm sorry I cannot answer your question right now. I do not know. I just know that we must do as my mother says. The vampire clan needs a king. I need to be crowned king before this terrible thing happens. Then I can make proper instructions." I alert.
She nods in agreement then looks at me dead in the eyes. "Then let's get married tomorrow night."

"I need guards over the border 24/7. When you're changing shifts, make sure there is always someone at the border. The guard on the shift stays and waits for his replacement to meet him at the border. Do not move from your spot, do you understand?" I instruct. They nod their heads in agreement. "You're all dismissed." The guards get up from their seats and head out the door for their next shift. "That's the last batch, how many did we do?" Nick asks me. "There's four batches in total. We've just used up 4 hours of our time. We need to get to work." I sigh.
"Fair enough. Where's the bride to be?" He asks me. "She's with Catherine, running over boring stuff. The royal court will officially meet her tomorrow at the wedding where I'll be crowned. Understood?" He nods. "Alright." I turn around to face him. "I'm sorry to be so strict on you. You're the best omega that ever existed, you know?" I remind him. "Thanks."
"They should have never imprisoned you for a crime you didn't even commit." I whisper.
His face suddenly changes to my statement. "Your highness, that's in the past. I can't do much unless I can relive those 7 years I spent trapped in a jail cell" He shakes his head. "You're innocent and you know that." He smiles but is not convinced. "I will have the hall ready by midnight." And with that, he walks off.
I remember that day. Walking into the hall with Catherine in my hands. We'd been messing around in the garden and I'd caught her, picked her up and dragged her three floors high just to show my mother and aunt how much of a mess she'd become. She was rolling on the floor, picking up all the dirt and staining it on her pink flowery dress my auntie Celia got for her.
But little did I know, my auntie had died.
I ran up the stairs and peeked through the door. "She's dead?" "What do you mean she's dead?" "How could Cecilia die?" My mother's voice cries. My uncle Cassius' voice comes into view. "The doors of hell were opened and she died at the scene." He says, voice stone cold. "Cassius! How could you be so calm about this? Your mate is dead! Our Queen!" My father shouts.
"Do not speak to your king like that or I'll throw you into the dungeon like I did to that scum boy that opened the door in the first place! I should reward him actually. I have inevitable power now." He growls. That day, my aunt Celia had died along with my uncle Cassius. Nicholas Fang was thrown into prison for opening the doors of hell. But in reality, he never did.

I walk out of the castle and into the garden outside. It's bitter cold. The moon shines bright over the sky along with all the stars. Phoebe. It's funny now that I think of it. How I'm the midnight sky and she's there, lighting me up with her stars. I smile at the thought of her. She's so brave. I'd swooped her up into my arms and taken her away from her castle, telling her that she was the future queen of the clan that murdered her family. And now she's willing to marry me under the cost of my kind. That's my girl.
I walk around the borders of our territory, kicking the rocks in my way as I go. There are guards back near the forest, guarding the area while I walk on the outskirts, my mind racing. The small stone in front of me rolls as the tip of my shoe kicks it, sending it a metre away and stopping until I kick it again. Over and over. My eyes stay fixated on it as my mind is somewhere else.
'What's coming?' 'I'm not ready.' 'I can't participate in a war.' 'I'm not even king yet.'
"Heads up." A dark voice appears out of nowhere, alerting me from my thoughts. My foot stops tormenting the stone in front of me and I look up, my eyes meeting with the owner of the unfamiliar voice.
He's a guy. He's not that tall nor is he short. He has white blonde hair like Nick but he is a lot lighter, platinum and icy. It hangs down to his eyes and covers them slightly. They're dark and round like Phoebe's too. Wait, this guy's face reflects Phoebes. Exactly. I could sense his aura. His scent. He wasn't from here. He was a werewolf.
"What are you doing on our borders?" I growl. He smirks and leans back against the tree behind him. "And how did you find this location?" A werewolf can't know where the vampire coven was located. "Oh please, it's only fair I know where you are. I mean, you come to ours." He grins. Shit. "Who are you and what do you want?" I ask sternly. "I have guards protecting every area here. One call and I'll be sure to arrest you." I threaten. He lets out a chuckle and flips the coin in his hand, lifting his leg up and resting it on the tree.
"Oh, I don't want anything." He replies, tossing the coin up into the air. The moonlight shines on his hair and makes him look eerie. "I know about you and Phoebe." He says, eyes fixated on the coin turning in the air. "I don't approve of you." He spits."That is no way to talk to your future queen." I grit through my teeth. He only laughs and shakes his head, putting the coin back into his pocket. "Oh but, that's no way to talk to your future brother-in-law, is it now?" My body freezes in its spot, realisation hitting me like a truck.
"Ah. Now I see the clocks turning in your eyes! I see you've heard of me." He comments. "What are you doing here?" I ask him, confused. He pushes himself off the tree and steps forward running his fingers through his hair and shaking his head. "You're wrong there. I don't want anything." He replies.
"Take Phoebe after tomorrow. I just thought I might pop in and say hi to the man that's gonna steal her away from me, that's all." He walks towards me, hands in his pockets as he struts forward, stopping just in front of me where the border stops. "Is that all?" I step back, furthering the distance between us. He thinks for a moment, then replies. "No." My vision clogs again and I fall to the ground. My head feels like the blood inside of me is running up to it, crashing onto my brain. "So weak. I don't understand how you could be king." I hear him say before I shut my eyes and lean back in pain.
When they open, I can't see the icy snow that covered the ground anymore. Nor could I see the forests. I sat up, the pain in my head slowly backing down. I look around me, trying to figure out where the hell I was. Grey brick walls. Wolf paintings. Small dark room. In the corner, Felix stands there with blood red eyes. His mouth moves ever so slightly, whispering something. His gaze is fixated to the other side of the room. So I follow it.
Phoebe sits in the very corner, opposite of Felix. She's sitting up, using her palms to push herself further and further away and closer towards the wall. Her eyes are filled with fear and dread.
"Please. Don't do this, babe." I hear her whisper as her back hits the wall. Babe?
I look over to where her eyes are on. There, crawling closer towards her is a hideous and terrifying creature. Blood red eyes. Sharp canines seeping out of his mouth. Blood dripping down from them in hunger. He pounces forward towards her. I turn back, not letting the scene scar my eyes.
One single scream. Phoebe's scream. That was me. I was going to kill Phoebe.
When I return to my senses, Felix stands over me, crouching down to my level as I was still laying on the ground, gasping for air. He snickers and moves back, playing with his coin again."What the hell was that?" I growl.
He looks down at me before whispering, "Let the wars begin."
