《Bite or Howl》Chapter 6

"Get guards along the castle's border. If anything comes close, kill it." I give Nick strict instructions to tell the guards. He nods and runs off, getting soldiers from downstairs. I turn back to Phoebe.
"I'm sorry you had to see that." I whisper, taking her hand and bringing her closer to me.
"What was that? We should've helped or done something!"
"I'm sorry, that's just how things are. I'm just glad you're okay." I try to reason, soothing her hair.
"I'm sorry, I should've protected you better." I mumble. "No, it's not your fault. You protected me fine. I'm okay, see?" She pulls back, motioning to herself. "Kinda sucks how your first impression of the castle is this." I tell her, looking out the window. There are armies of guards swarming towards the borders. "It's normally more, you know, peaceful." Her brows furrow and she looks around the castle, slowly spinning as she takes in every feature. "It's okay, I get you." She replies. I smile back at her and take her hand in mine.
I take her towards the hall where I know Catherine would be. "Catherine!" I yell. I could hear the clangs of pots and pans from the other side of the room. "Coming!" I hear her yell. "Don't mind all the noise." I whisper into Phoebe's ear. She laughs back at me. Catherine comes out from behind the wall and her face glows with excitement when she sees Phoebe. "Cath, this is Phoebe." I say, motioning towards her. Catering comes running towards her and engulfing her into a hug. Her pale skinny arms wrap around her small waist, brushing against her exposed skin.
She lifts her up from the floor and I hear a small yelp escape from Phoebe's lips. "I'm excited to finally meet you!" She yells, dropping Phoebe back on the floor. "You're so pretty!" She squeals, squishing her cheeks with the thumb. "Geez Cath, don't kill her the first day you meet her." I joke. She glares back at me but then turns back to Phoebe. "You deserve so much better than that blueberry over there." She whispers not so quietly.
She averts her gaze from Phoebe back to me. "Can I steal her for some time?" She asks. I was actually planning to do something with her. Get to know her a bit more. I actually felt sad that she was being taken away from me. Most mates do, I guess. The separation between your mate and yourself. But I let her anyway. "Get Nick to take her around in an hour. Have fun." I walk closer to Phoebe and plant a kiss on her forehead. "Don't listen to anything this idiot says about me, okay?" She laughs and pulls away from me then walks with Catherine, their laughter to be heard echoing through the halls.

"There are vampires along the borders and others guarding the east side where the attackers might come from." A guard explains to me. I dismiss him with a wave of my hand and let my head sink back down. I lean against the window, my hand balancing against it and giving my body some support. "You're becoming like your father." I hear Nick say behind me. "Thanks for the compliment." I say, though I know it's not. "Imagine having the power to have people do things for you with a wave of their hand? What an amazing life that would be." I hear him jumping down onto the couch. I can almost imagine him laying his legs on the coffee table with a bowl of popcorn in his hands. I turn around and see him in the exact picture I imagined him to be in.
"Want some?" He asks me through a mouth stuffed with popcorn. I ignore his question and sit back beside him. "What were the black witches doing there?" I whisper. I think back to a few hours ago, remembering the scenes that my eyes had observed. I should've done something.
"What could you have done though?" I said that out loud. "Anything. Something." I complain. My powers are capable of doing something. I should've.
"In the end of the day, doing something is just gonna put all of us in danger. You have to think about that too." He tells me. "I know but, I'm capable of doing something. Either way, why would they have attacked? They aren't in a war or anything. There's no reason for them too." I say, baffled. Something just isn't adding up. They would have had to have some sort of source on their side. Someone. A vampire. "The war is between the black and white witches, not us. Let's not add ourselves into this." Nick tells me. I look at him with a horrified look on my face as a thought runs through my head. The war is between the black and white witches. Not us.
"But is it?"
Nick and I walk back to the hall where Catherine and Phoebe are. "Take Phoebe around so she can get to know the place a bit more. I mean, she is gonna be queen one day." I tell Nick. He nods and goes straight into the room. I really do have so much power, don't I?I lean against the wall, listening in on their conversation.

"Here, take some of these muffins." I hear my sister say. "Wow, you bake?" Phoebe's voice. "Yeah, I do love to. Take on, give it to your brother, Felix." I walk into the room where they are. Catherine has a tray of blueberry muffins in her arms, titling it towards Phoebe. I sneak behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist. "Bullshit, you haven't stepped foot in the kitchen for three years." I say. Phoebe laughs while Catherine's face turns red. She laughs it off too. "Nick is gonna take you around, okay?" I tell Phoebe, spinning her around to face me. "Sure." She replies, taking a few muffins from Catherine's tray. "Are you gonna be okay?" I ask her. "I'll be fine, I mean, Nick'll take care of me." She reassures me. 'I'm sorry if the separation hurts you.' I sneak into her head. She laughs. 'It won't.'

"Phoebe's nice." Catherine comments, laying her hair down. She walks towards the window, watching Nick's car leave the castle gates. "She seems like a good queen." She tells me, leaning against the window. "What did you and her talk about?" I ask her. She turns around and walks over to where I'm seated. "How much of a jerk you are." She grins, sticking her tongue out at me.
"You're one bitch of a sister." I joke.
"I heard there was an attack." She says, changing the subject. "What happened out there?"
"The black witches broke through their borders and attacked a group of white witches." I explain.
"That's the third attack this month." She whispers. "I know. That's why we need to be alert." I reply, strictly. "But it's good that Phoebes gonna be queen. You know, it's a bonus for us." She says rather shady. I squint my eyes and quickly look at her, questioning her comment. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"Phoebe's royalty, isn't she? With her, you can take over the werewolf kingdom and gain power over them." She replies, sitting down in front of me as if we're in a formal meeting. "I'm not taking over. I'm going to form an alliance." I declare. Ugh, you're just like mom and dad. All about peace blah blah blah." She complains. I can feel the anger and insult rising up inside me. Stay calm.
"Don't speak such garbage about our parents and your royals." I hiss. "Chase, I don't think you see the point. There's an opportunity right in front of you." She continues. "Catherine. Don't test me." I growl. But she keeps going. "When there's an opportunity, you take it." She yells. "Catherine." I say in a strict and warning tone. "It's not about peace! Power always comes first!" She screams.
I stand up, abruptly, letting the chair fly backwards. My eyes grow hot with anger, the darkness in my body travelling around me, reaching the ends of my fingertips. The room shakes, glass cups from the table float upwards. My body is surrounded with a black and red aura. Catherine stops yelling, gasps and moves back in her chair. "I am your king now! You will listen to me!" I growl at her. The aura on my side shoots sideways, breaking the glass windows in the room. From the corner of my eyes, I can see it escape, firing straight out of the castle and out. I hear her let out a small scream. "Chase-" She says in a rather small voice. Her anger had died down from my figure.
I was scaring her.
I can hear the loud footsteps of guards coming up, checking what was going on. They come through from both sides of the room, staying near the entrance.
"Take her to her room." I instruct, not letting my gaze leave Catherine. My eyes burn in my skull, feeling the heat and rage concealed inside of them. I release my grip on my fists, letting them cool down. I feel my aura slowly seep back inside of me as I calm down. I take one look around me. The glass windows are broken, the mugs and cups that were floating are all shattered on the ground. The curtains fly in the air from the wind entering from the windows.
I turn back to Catherine, guards slowly picking her up from the ground.
I whisper under my breath, "You are excused."
