《The Hybrid》13. Try me

Liam's eyes are a cold blue as he picks me up and carries me over to a booth on the far side of the ballroom. He gently lays me down onto the white leather then places his cold hands on both sides of my face. He looks into my eyes with a frown.

"You drank the ambrosia, didn't you?" His face remains cold.

My vision comes in and out of focus. I sit in the booth trying to regain my composure. Embarrassment flows over me from the scene I just caused.

I can still hear the sauce-covered woman in the distance shrieking.

Liam hears her too. "Now look what you've done," He mutters under his breath as he rolls his eyes before standing up to approach her.

Immediately after Liam is out of view, Russell approaches me. He bends down to my level and shoves a cool glass of water into my hands. I take a small sip and wince at the bitter drink.

"What is it?" I say making a face.

"It'll help." He says as he turns around to make sure Liam isn't looking, "You must've tried one of the special drinks from the bar," he chuckles.

"What the hell is ambrosia anyways?" I scoff as I take another uneasy sip of the tangy water.

"Come on. We should get out of here." Russell ignores my question, reaching his hand out to me.

"Go? Go where?" I allow him to help me to my feet.

"Away from here." He looks back towards Liam once more.

Blood rushes to my head, causing my vision to run dark for a second. I shake my head from side to side to snap myself out of it. I take another big gulp of the water before setting it down on the table.

Russell wraps his hand around mine and pulls me towards the door. I look back and see the devilish vampire talking to the angry lady, not knowing of my escape. She motions to her dress and Liam holds back a smile as he tries to reassure her.

Russell leads me out of the ballroom and down the hallway.

"Where are you taking me?" I finally stop, pulling my hand from his.

"We have to leave this house... after I do something. But It's full of vampires." He states, his eyes searching the halls anxiously. He reaches for my hand again.

"I know that's why I'm here," I state in confusion, "Why are you here?"

He was a rogue, very dangerous at that. Why would he come to a vampire's house? Liam had mentioned that Aubrey was being "dealt with". Maybe he is here to rescue her or something?

But why would a werewolf be handling affairs for a vampire. A pureblooded one at that.

"I have... business to take care of. Speaking of the matter, wait here and I will be back in thirty minutes." He says mysteriously, fixing his collar.

"No way." I stammer. "You just dragged me out of that party to leave me here?"

He starts walking away "I'll be back Alex," He says over his shoulder.

I let out a groan.

I stand in the hallway for a moment. My mind floats back to escape. Where's Tyler? Had he given up on the search for me? Something about escaping with Russell makes me uneasy. He did leave me in the woods. He isn't trustworthy.

I finally decide that I should go back to the party before Liam notices my absence and comes looking for me. Whatever Russell was up to, he didn't want Liam to know he was here.

I slip back into the ballroom and grab a small appetizer from one of the trays. It is a thin cracker with a white spread and some sort of meat on it.

I see Liam in the distance but his back is to me. He has likely noticed that I am no longer in the booth by now. I begin to make my way towards him but slam into another person. A man. He turns to face me and I see his perfect brows furrow together slightly.

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to run into you." I sputter out embarrassed. His expression softens as soon as he sees my cheeks flush.

"That's okay. Where were you headed in such a rush?" He tilts his head to the side. His eyes glitter in the lighting.

He is a tall man with a very chiseled jawline and finely styled blonde hair. He looks as if he was in his mid twenties. His eyes are a deep blue, but they are not as captivating as Liam's.

"Oh no where. I was just. I'm clumsy." I awkwardly answer with a nervous laugh.

"Well if you're not going anywhere, may I have this dance?" He asks, reaching his hand out for me.

"I don't really- I can't- dance." I fumble. He takes my hand anyway and swiftly spins me around.

I spin fast and a gasp escapes my lips at the sudden movements. He then quickly pulls me back to where I am slightly pressed against his large chest. He laces his fingers with mine. His other hand snakes around my body to rest in the small of my back. He leads the dance with fluid movements. We glide across the dancefloor.

"So what brings you to this party, wolf?" He states without missing a beat. My eyes widen as he already can tell that I am not like him. I make a move to pull away but his grip on me tightens.

My heart thumps a little faster.

"Let me go." I pull again but he holds me tightly.

"Not so fast." He says smoothly.

"What do you want?" I question tensely.

"You're here with Liam right?" He questions with a slight smirk.

"Yes. Why?" Why is this information important?

"My dear friend, Liam, spoke of you." He begins wishfully, "He said he had discovered a sort of hybrid, a wolf and a vampire. You." He continues, the glitter in his eyes dances, "A creature of that sort is very valuable. And very powerful at that." He nods his head to my form.

"You're right, very powerful. So if I were you I would quit messing with me." I hiss, pulling away from him finally. I walk through the crowd and out the door of the ball. I exit into one of the many living rooms. I walk to an open area where there is a large staircase. I climb the staircase and sit on the top step.

I bury my head into my hands. Tonight has been one thing after another. My heart jumps as I think back to the woman in the not-so-white dress. Does that mean I ruined the night? Will Liam hold it over my head? I take in a deep breath.

"You didn't think you could escape me that easily did you?" My attention is drawn to the bottom of the staircase. I frown upon seeing the man standing there with a menacing look in his eyes.

I don't want to be messed with right now.

"Back off." I growl out a warning. My eyes flash an electric blue as my wolf threatens to come out.

"You'll like it with me. My house is much brighter." He muses, scowling at the dark walls around him. He makes a slow ascend up the marble staircase.

"Don't come any closer." I warn from my perch on the top step.

He is a vampire, though. In a flash he is at the top of the staircase. He wraps a large clammy hand around my wrist and pulls me to my feet.

He begins to drag me down the stairs but I am not going so easily.

"Stop!" I claw at his hand in an attempt to free myself. He turns around abruptly, letting me go. I fall down a step onto my ass. The man reaches into his jacket pocket and reveals a syringe filled with a chilly blue liquid. He grabs my elbow, stabbing me in the arm with the needle.

A fiery pain shoots up my arm. I roughly thrust my heel into his knee before the rest of the liquid is injected into me. He tumbles down the stairs with a groan. I rip the half-filled needle out of my arm and chunk it down the stairs.

The man pulls himself back to his feet and wipes a smudge of blood from his nose. My head begins to spin once again as a terrifying look crosses his face.

If he really wants a fight then I'm gonna give him one.

"That little shot I just gave you should knock you out any minute now." He smiles evilly. "It has a special formula that weakens you." He shrugs out of his black jacket and adjusts the sleeves of his button up.

That is when an anger bubbles inside of me. I can feel my wolf pushing to the surface. I was able to fight off the ambrosia, I will fight this too. I grab the railing of the staircase and pull myself to a standing position. He raises a brow as he watches me like a hawk.

"What are you gonna do, wolf?" A challenge.

I push off of the ground and lunge my body towards him. He catches me roughly by the throat and throws me like a ragdoll back to the top of the stairs. I roll back over my neck before knocking into the wall at the top of the platform.

My head begins to throb harder.

"That's it." I groan out. Then I give in to her. I release my wolf into the wild. My bones crack into place and I growl out at him. The deep growl that erupts from my throat echoes in the large room. His eyebrows raise for a moment as his lips part slightly.

"White wolves really are beautiful aren't they." He admires with excitement. He pulls the tie away from his neck and spreads his legs for my next attack.

I lunge for him again, this time I sink my teeth into his throat. He is knocked off of his feet and we both tumble to the bottom of the stairs. He pounds me in the sides with strong fists as we roll together. We hit the bottom with a crash and I am thrown off of him.

My feet are quick to catch the floor as I slide across the stone with a screech.

"What the bloody hell is going on?" Liam roars out in his beautiful accent. I snap my eyes to him. Shock and anger. That is all that is shown on his tense figure. His eyes send daggers towards the man.

"Move back, Liam. I was just showing the mutt her place." The man groans out as he stands to his feet. His neck now slowly pours blood.

"You are not to lay a hand on her." Liam steps in between us, his finger pointed at the man.

"Now Liam, she challenged me." The man says after shooting me a glare.

"I said back off, Ruben." He says a final time. His tone has dropped into more of a warning. Ruben looks back at Liam and I can see a new fear etched into his features.

He gestures to me once again but I decide to take advantage of the distraction. I slip through the door down the hall and pad my way through the hallway. I know exactly where I am going. I leap down the staircase and run until I reach Addison's cell.

I skid to a stop as I reach the large glass case that had been holding her captive. The casing is empty. There is only a ruffle of green blankets left on top of the bed. The door to the cage is wide open.

My heart beats in my ears as a cold shock washes over me. What if she is dead? My breathing becomes labored as I think back to the vampire Liam. He promised me she would go free. Then Ruben attacked me.

My head feels woozy once again. The syringe. Whatever blue liquid was in it is messing with my head and I do not think it is giving the effect he had hoped it would. I don't feel weak. I just feel angry. Angry that I was attacked. Angry that Addison is missing. Angry that the bastard tried to drug me.

I try to center my emotions. I need to find Addison. But that concern is just replaced by a burning rage to bite Ruben's throat open. I let out a low growl as I stalk my way back up the stairs.

I reach the clearing where the boys continue to argue. I immediately lunge into the air towards Ruben. I knock him off of his feet and snap my teeth at him.

In a second, I am thrown off of him by Liam's strong arms. I ram into the wall with a yelp before sliding to the floor.

"Control your dog, Liam." Ruben spits, brushing off his shirt.

I growl again as I pace a small circle around him. He looks nervous at my ferocity. This man was going to kidnap me. He was going to take me away.

"Alexandra, stop." I hear Liam command. His words only edge me on. I howl and put all of my attention on Ruben.

Ruben's eyes fill with a bloody red color as he finally reveals his long yellow fangs. "Back off, wolf." He hisses with venom. He raises his long leg and shoves my chest back several feet.

I snap my jaw at him again. In a flash, Liam stands between the two of us with his hands out towards me.

"Now, little wolf, why don't you calm down a bit before you do any real damage to the man." He chuckles, trying to calm me. This has the opposite effect on me. Now I am faced with my true demons.

Liam is the one who kidnapped me. He took my best friend hostage. He threatened to kill her.

I adjust my position, ready to pounce.

"What the hell did you give her?" Liam shoots a look at Ruben. Ruben's eyes drift to the half filled syringe of blue liquid that lays on the floor a few feet away.

"It was a simple drug to calm the girl, not make her want to murder the town!" He defends himself anxiously. This pleases me.

Liam turns back to me, concern in his eyes as he studied my wolf's expression. Werewolves can be dangerous to vampires. If we decide, we can sink a venom into their skin with one bite.

"Come on, don't look at me like that, love." He smiles calmingly. "Just shift back into your beautiful human self and we can talk about this."

I snarl at that statement. He doesn't care about me. I leap towards Liam only for him to grab me in the air. He holds my body close to his chest where I cannot move. I bite his shoulder as hard as I can. I hear the fabric of his jacket slice open as my fangs make contact with flesh. I feel his body tense underneath me as he lets out a grunt.

"Now sweetheart, now's not the time or place for you to be biting me." He jokes lightly, his grip tightening.

Liam then grabs my snout and pulls my face towards his. I look into his navy blue eyes that seem to swirl with black smoke.

"Change back." His eyes darken for a moment. Mind control. You know what? His mind games are getting really old. My anger is so strong that I can avoid his abilities. I struggle against him. I let out another low rumble as I kick my back legs. He keeps his grip firm.

His face hardens. "Do not make me ask again." His tone drops. "Change back." He raises his voice.

This time it works. I shift back into my now-naked human form. He sets me down and quickly pulls off his jacket. He drapes it over me to conceal my body.

Anger quickly melts into other emotions as I start to sob into his chest. His strong arms hold me closely as he hushes me. He runs his fingers gently through my hair.

He uses a hand to lift my chin so that our eyes meet. "It's okay." He breathes out with a sensitive tone.

"You should snap her neck for that!" Ruben snarls with a finger pointed in my direction. "She almost killed me and you're hugging her?" He narrows his eyes at me.

Liam snaps his head towards Ruben in an instant, "You injected her with a syringe. What were you going to do with her?" I feel his bicep tighten.

Ruben is silent for a moment.

"Do I need to ask again?" Liam questions coldly.

"You want to know? I was going to take your mutt and sell her to the highest bidder." He yells.

Liam releases his grip on me and stands to his feet. He takes a slow step towards Ruben, his head cocking to the side dangerously.

"You were what?" He whispers out in a deathly tone.

"You heard me." Ruben shoves his hands into the pockets of his slacks. He puffs out his chest and stands his ground. In an instant, Liam moves his arms and snaps Ruben's neck.

I let out a deep gasp as I watch Ruben's body fall to the ground in horror. His head is cocked to the side and his eyes remain open but lifeless.

"Don't worry sweetheart, he's not dead. Yet." He spares me a wink. "Now, let's get you some proper clothing, unless you want to stay like that for my amusement," he smirks.

I feel my cheeks heat up. My thoughts then return to my missing best friend. My eyebrows furrow as I turn back to Liam.

"What is it, love?" He notices my look.

"Where's Addison?" I ask.

Maybe he moved her for the party, knowing I would seek her out. Now is not the time to be unreasonable.

"In her cell... why?" Liam studies me for a moment.

My heart drops.
