《The Hybrid》2. Run

The bloody smile that the vampire gave me will haunt me for the rest of time.
"Run, Al!" were the alpha's last words before he was tackled to the ground.
So I ran like a coward.
I ran through the forest as the alpha's screams rang in my ears.
"Hello there." A voice from one of the monsters shouted to me.
Those words propelled my legs to run even faster. I have always been faster than the other wolves, but I was no match for a vampire. Biologically speaking, vampires are faster than any creature. They are the natural predators of werewolves.
I pass the border of my pack, the mud squishing between my toes as I begin to breathe heavily. That's right, I forgot my shoes.
Don't let it distract you. Keep running, I think to myself reassuringly.
Whoosh. The sound of wind alerts me that they are catching up faster than I was expecting.
My heart races as I think of what is going to happen when I finally run out of breath. My heart aches at the thought of leaving Addison. Everything in that pack was now up in flames. My entire life was burning. My family, my friends.
A tear drags down my face and I quickly swipe it away. As I look back up to see where I was going, I run directly into a body. It is like when someone slams into a pole in the cartoons. The man didn't move an inch, he just caught me from sliding down to the ground.
I look up to see that he might be the most beautiful creature I have ever seen. He has dark messy hair and pale white skin. He is skinny, but muscular at the same time. His eyes are a kaleidoscope green as his thick eyebrows furrow at the sight of me.
"Slow down there, Love" he chuckles as I freeze in place. His accent is foreign as it fills my ears. My head spins from the impact as I hear the other vampires catch up to me. I stand to my own feet and back away from the man.
I turn around to see that he and I are surrounded by seven devilish fanged creatures.
"She's fast." One says breathing heavily. "For a wolf."
"Well, nice knowing you," Another said, lunging at me. I shrivel in place and squeeze my eyes shut.

"Wait." The man says casually as he raises a hand in the air. The vampire ceases his movements only inches away from me.
"You're not just werewolf are you?" He inquires, looking me over.
I swallow, trembling under his gaze.
"Answer me, Little wolf. This could save your life." He sounds impatient.
"What is it to you?" I spit, raising my posture to hide my fear.
He smirks, placing both hands behind his back. He approaches me with two steps and then lends in closer.
"One of my men said you were fast for a wolf. Is that true?" He tilts his head to the side.
"Definitely." The man nods, still trying to catch his breath.
"And for someone your height, even with the speed of a canine, you should not have caused my man to lose his air." He narrows his eyes. "You are too frail to be of a noble wolf bloodline."
I suck in a shallow breath. What does he want from me?
"What are you then?" He asks again. I look down at the ground and study my bare feet. "Hm?"
I raise my chin, my lip curling, "Maybe your man is just slow for a vampire." I narrow my eyes in return.
"Maybe." He nods, stepping back, "Grab her and let's go." He waves his hand, turning his back to me.
The vampires surround me, pinning my arms behind my back. One of them roughly kicks me in the back of the leg so I fall to my knees.
I bear my fangs and hiss menacing growl.
A devilish cheshire smile covers the man's features as he turns back.
"Now look at those teeth." He claps his hands, bending down to my level. He grabs my chin and forces my eyes to look at him.
"My dad was a vampire..." I say softly. I have no move left to make. Maybe if he knows that I am like him, he will spare my life.
"A hybrid." He purrs out, brushing a piece of my hair out of my face. "I want you to be mine." He whispers, sending chills down my body.
My heart feels as if it is going to jump out of my chest and run away. My wolf growls inside me, warning me of this man. He is obviously a bloodsucker like his hideous companions.

"I belong to no one" I grow and shove myself away from the men holding me.
His face drops, his features going emotionless as if I have just slapped him in the face.
"She's a feisty little wolf isn't she, Liam." One laughed.
His name is Liam. He seemed stronger than the other Vampires and he smelled of good, expensive cologne. Maybe he is their leader.
Liam chuckled. "Indeed she is. We can fix that though." He takes another step towards me and I take one back. Another step and I go to take a step back but realize there is a tree behind me. He takes another step which puts him only inches away from me. My heart throbs.
"Now are you going to come with me nicely or am I going to have to drag you with me?" He asks softly. His voice is almost soothing. Something about him makes me want to disobey every instinct I have and go with him. But werewolves and vampires don't mix.
"Go to hell." I push against him. He smirks, accepting the challenge.
"Very well then, looks like I'm going to have to drag you. This will be fun." His velvety voice rings in my ears.
"I said. I'm not going anywhere." My wolf grows angry at his stubbornness and I can feel her trying to claw her way out of me.
"Oh did I make the Little Wolf angry?" He looks at me evilly. He sounds as if this was some twisted game to him. He is enjoying this.
I am ready to pounce on him and sink my teeth into his face. I swing my arm to punch him but he blocks it swiftly and throws me to the ground.
I drag myself to my feet, my eyes flashing an electric blue as I boil in anger from this man.
"Come on then!" He yells into the chilled air. "Where's your wolf, huh?" He circles around me. His provoking methods are annoying.
That was it. I jumped to my feet and punched him in the side. There was hardly an effect.
"Was that supposed to hurt?" He smirked as if this was a game to him.
I release a final growl as my wolf tears its way through. If he wants to meet my wolf, he can go right ahead. Snowy white hair erupts from my skin and my bones crack into place. My fangs extend and I stand on all fours as my transformation is complete.
Liam's eyes bulge as he sees my true form. He then smiles his wicked smile and gets ready to fight.
I lunge for the bastard, knocking him to the ground. Satisfaction courses through my veins as I finally make a dent in this wall of a man.
His other minions rush towards me all attacking me at once. I snap my jaw, sinking my teeth into the arm of one of the vampires. He screeches in pain and rips his arm away. I spit the flesh and get tackled to the ground.
A large body pins down my figure as my head hits the ground. I whip my head around to take another snap at my captor, but he beats me to it. Sharp teeth sink into my fur causing my wolf to howl in agony.
I kick my legs, scratching and biting onto anything within my reach, but the vampires tower over me.
They scratched me and a few bit chunks of my fur out. My fur had gone from a snowy white, to a bloody reddish color.
I finally stop fighting all of the vampires as my energy quickly depletes. So much blood. I laid down. Maybe just a minute of rest.
Liam finally enters my view, his hands behind his back as his face spreads with a menacing smile.
"What's wrong little wolf? No more energy?" He smirks. Then his head snaps to the side and his eyebrows furrow. There is a rustling out of my view.
I hear fighting behind me. Liam is tackled to the ground by a large dark figure. A jet black wolf with glowing red eyes. He was beautiful with his gleaming coat and strong legs.
The black wolf punches on the vampires around Liam, sinking his fangs into them.
"We shall meet again." Liam nods towards me before vanishing into the darkness.
I just laid there on the cold ground. The black wolf approached me finally, his glowing eyes peering into mine. His scent fills my nose and I immediately feel comfort.
That is, until everything went black.

Conquest of Avalon
Revenge. The Kingdom of Avalon swept across the Empire of the Fox a generation past, conquering the heartlands and leaving the broken remnants to stew in the island duchy of Guerron. This isn't a story of Good versus Evil, of kindly kings doing their best to lift all subjects, or of unvarnished heroes doing battle against evil. Instead, this story is about power: who has it, who wants it, and what people will do to obtain it. It is about the violence inherent in the imperial project and how even the most well-intentioned rulers and conquerors are, still, engaging in systemic violence against those conquered and defeated. Our three point-of-view characters are a peasant turned fire wizard, an excitable duelist with more enthusiasm than sense, and a scheming mage-priestess bent on reclaiming her family's birthright and waging war on the foreign oppressors who rule her home... no matter the cost in blood or treasure.
