《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 103: When You Know

"I don't want to go back." I sighed, reaching over for his hand, intertwining our fingers. He kept his eyes forward, one hand leaning over the wheel.
"Neither do I." He said. "But.. I'm sure your mom can't wait to hear about last night." I felt my face get hot, now unable to contain the smile that escaped my lips.
"Well, we're gonna leave a lot out." I muttered. He peeked over at me, now giggling to himself.
"Yeah, that can stay.. between us."
I couldn't believe it was only a matter of days now before he left. I hated how most days I couldn't even fully enjoy him still being here because I was so worried about how it was going to feel once he was gone.
"You know, considering.. I don't see why you can't.. stay over my house.. if you want." He said softly, his thumb now gently tracing over the top of my hand. I smirked back over at him.
"You really think my mom is just gonna let me sleep over?" He shrugged, smiling back at me.
"She knows we stayed together last night, what makes this any different?"
"It's just.. different."
"I think if you let me talk to her-"
"No, Jake." I laughed, rolling my eyes. I could hear him quietly giggling to himself, his grip on my hand getting tighter.
"I just want as much time with you as I can get." He sighed. "I think she'd understand." She of all people would completely understand. Out of anyone, I wouldn't be surprised if she pushed me to go with them.
"We've still got a few days.." I muttered, looking back out the window. I felt him pull my hand up to his lips, gently kissing the top.
"Well, I want to spend every one with you."
"Me too."
As he pulled up to my house, I could see all of the lights on in his, the rest of his family no doubt just sitting down for dinner. I missed going over there, but now, considering, I knew everything would be different.
He parked the car, quickly getting out and making his way around to the passenger side. I couldn't help but smile, loving how he took care of me, no matter how small the gesture. I got out, reaching for the back seat when he waved me off, motioning back up to my house as he grabbed my bag.
"You're just gonna invite yourself in, huh?" I laughed. He nodded, flashing me a wide grin as he followed me up the front steps.
"We're home!" I called out, feeling my face get red when I realized what I had said, already getting too comfortable looping the both of us together. I was sure she would comment on it.

"Oh! Come on up!" Mom called out from her bedroom. He didn't hesitate to make his way upstairs, stopping at my room first, tossing my bag at the end of my bed. Before he could come back out, I grabbed onto his shirt, pulling him back in, shutting the door behind us.
"What is it?" He laughed, his smile growing as he reached up, gently caressing my face. I couldn't help but smile, pulling him into a quick kiss.
"Now, do not bring up me going with you again." I whispered. "She's going to insist-"
"Then.. what's the problem?" He said happily. I shook my head, trying my best to contain my smile, but it was impossible around him.
"You know what the problem is. I have to be here for her." He sighed, holding his stare of me as his eyes moved down to my lips. I pulled him into another long kiss, taking his hand and bringing him back out into the hallway, leading him down to her room.
Her eyes instantly lit up as she propped herself back up against her pillows, forcing as big of a smile as she could manage. I wondered how she was actually feeling. I would talk to her once he went back home.
"So how was it?" She asked. "Did you guys have fun?"
"It was incredible." Jake said, leaning back against the doorframe. "I've never seen anything like that before."
"That's so nice." She sighed. I could tell she wished she could have gone. My mom loved weddings. She loved any kind of party, really. But it had been years since she had gone to one.
"Me and Jaime's father had such a beautiful wedding.." She said, her voice trailing off. I made my way over, sitting down on her bed as I saw her replaying the night in her mind, her eyes looking off in a daze.
"What did you guys do?" Jake asked, making his way further into the room, now leaning up against the bed. I reached over for his hand, pulling him closer.
"Oh, it was like out of a dream.." She started, going into such detail about the shape of her dress, how delicious their cake was, and how everyone danced until the sun came up. I loved hearing her talk about him with such a light heart, despite knowing just how much she missed him every day.
"So, do you want to get married one day?" She asked, turning to Jake. I felt my body get hot.
"Oh, of course." He said simply, his grip on my hand getting tighter. My heart jumped. "As long as I have my family there, I'll be happy with anything." I saw my mom quickly shoot me a look, giving me her same playful grin.

"When do you think you'd want-"
"Mom." I snapped, quickly cutting her off, knowing where she was going with that. She giggled to herself, rolling her eyes. I was thankful that Jake laughed it off, peeking down at me.
"Well, I think I've still got some time.. but.. as far as knowing.." He started, his voice trailing off. "You know when you know, I don't think.. timelines exist like that. But.. I'd want to be able to give.. her.. anything she wanted, and.. I can't really do that just yet so.. I wouldn't mind waiting."
He then peeked over at me, his smile growing.
"What about you?" I could tell my face was on fire, my words already getting caught in my throat.
"I.. I mean.. like you said.. when you know.. you know."
"But I'm sure with you guys going on tour, you're not really thinking about that right now." She chimed in. I felt him shrug.
"That's only a few months." He said simply. "But.. I could only hope that she'd still be here waiting for me when I got back."
"That kind of life.. would also be a lot to ask of someone." She said, now looking at me. He nodded.
"I know. It's.. it's not fair to unload on anyone if it's not their dream, and I know that. And.. if they ever decided.. it wasn't for them.. well, I would understand. I hope it would never come to that, because.. I'd spend every day, all day thinking about them, but.. if that turns out to be something they couldn't handle.. I'd have to respect that." I looked back up at him, feeling like we weren't just talking in general anymore. Mom noticed.
"Well, I don't want to take up anymore of your night, thanks for coming to see me. I'm so glad you guys had fun. I wish I could have been there."
"You were missed." Jake said, flashing her a wide grin. "Hopefully you can come out with us again soon." She nodded.
"That would be nice. Let's hope." Jake hesitated for a moment, peeking over at me before getting up.
"So, if you guys didn't have any plans tonight, of course you're invited too, Mrs. Adams, but.. if you're okay with it, I was wondering.. if you'd mind if Jaime came over for dinner. My mom made a huge spread and-"
"Oh, of course, Jaime you go." She said happily. "I can make myself something, that's fine. I'm.. very limited on what I can eat, anyway. You go have fun. I'll be here." I felt my heart beating faster, praying he didn't bring up me staying over, as badly as I wanted to.
I quickly shot him a look, motioning out into the hallway. He nodded, giggling to myself.
"I'll meet you downstairs." He said. "It was so good to see you."
"You too, Jake. Please tell your family I said hello."
"Of course."
I waited until I heard him make his way down the hall.
"Mom, I don't have to-"
"Go, Jaime." She said.
"I.. I can make you-"
"Go." She insisted. I sighed, sitting down on the edge of her bed again.
"Isn't he leaving soon?" She asked. I nodded, avoiding her eyes.
"Then go. Please."
"Okay." I sighed. "Thank you." Her smile grew.
"And.. if.. it gets a little too late.." She said. I felt my heart beating faster.
"What?"
"Well, I'd hate for you to have to make the trip back home, you might as well just.. stay there. Especially if you guys are drinking, I wouldn't want anything to happen." She said softly, winking at me. I couldn't contain my smile as I went over, leaning in and pulling her into a tight hug.
"Thank you." I whispered.
"Please enjoy your time with him, honey, for as long as you can." I nodded, squeezing her tighter.
If anyone could understand how this felt, it was her.
I was so lucky.
"Have fun!" She called out as I made my way out, shutting the door behind me. Turning the corner, I could see him waiting at the bottom of the stairs, turning around at the sound of my feet coming down the steps. My heart jumped at the sight of his wide grin.
"Everything okay?" He asked. I nodded, taking his hand and leading him outside, shutting the door behind us before pulling him into a passionate kiss. He didn't hesitate to reach up, holding my face in his hands, kissing me back harder.
"I could handle it." I sighed, staring back up at him. "All of it, I could handle it.. for you. I'd.. I'd always be here waiting for you." He held his stare on me for a moment, his lips eventually curling into a giddy grin as he pulled me into a long, tender kiss.
"When you know.. you know."

Overseer
From the nothingness I appeared. Bodiless, voiceless, ageless, I have only thoughts and emotions to guide me. My one connection to the world lies in the hearts of a small colony of lizards, just on the cusp of maturing. I reach out to them without hands, inspiring them to be more than what they are, shaping their bodies from visions of lost memories. But where do the memories come from? I am always left with more questions than answers. In my lonely shapeless existence the lizards cannot hear my words, and they cannot feel my touch, and I must wonder, do I even really exist? --- Called emotional, abstract, and beautiful by readers, this story is an observational account of a disembodied entity that has the power to influence and change a race of mildly intelligent lizard creatures. Memories of a previous life often serve as inspiration, but also generate questions as to whom the entity might have been before it became an Overseer.
