《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 82: Glowing

I tried my hardest not to let the smile escape from my lips as I peeked back at Jake who was already glaring. I reached over, gently rubbing his arm.
"He's just kidding." I giggled. Josh smirked back at him.
"Yeah. Kidding." He said, but I knew that tone.
"Come on." I said, now getting up and reaching for Jake's hand. "I'll help you get ready." He finally broke his glare as he looked back up at me, hesitating for a moment before finally following me out of the dressing room. He stayed quiet until we were across the hall, shutting the door behind us.
"What the hell was that?" He snapped. I felt my face get hot.
"What was what?" He rolled his eyes, going over to the mirror.
"That." He said. "With him."
"I don't know what you're talking about." I muttered, plopping down on the couch.
"Look at you, you look great!" He mocked, running his hands through his hair, glaring back at his reflection. I shook my head, smirking back at him.
"Well.. someone sounds jealous." I laughed. He shot me another look. "Jake, so what, he got a haircut. It looks good. It's a nice change for him, what's the big deal?"
"The big deal is you just couldn't seem to keep your hands off of him, could you?" He muttered.
"Jake.." I sighed, getting up and going over to him. I wrapped my arms around his stomach as I stared back at our reflection. I felt him sigh, finally relaxing his body, his face dropping.
"How do you think I'd look with-"
"Don't you dare." I laughed, leaning up, kissing his cheek. He finally gave me a gentle smile.
"Do you think.. maybe.. I should do more?" He asked softly. I could tell after what Josh said, now he was starting to overthink things, and I hated when he got in his own head.
"I think you look great, but.. I could help you if you want." He turned around, gently grabbing my waist, pulling me up against him.
"How so?" He asked, leaning in, gently kissing my cheek, his lips eventually making their way to mine. I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, kissing him back.
"Well, for one.." I said, backing away, looking him up and down. "This shirt isn't doing you any favors." He smirked back at me, his cheeks burning red.

"W-what do you mean?"
"I mean.. it's just not.. you're a rockstar, you should look like it." His smile grew.
"I'm not a rockstar, Jaime." He giggled to himself.
"Not dressed like that, you're not. I just think.. maybe Josh has the right idea. If you dressed the part, maybe.. everyone else will believe it. And then maybe.. you'll believe it too."
"Well, this is all I have." He said softly. I went over into the wardrobe, flipping through some of the leftover clothes from past acts.
"How about this?" I said, pulling out a cobalt blue velvet blazer. "You always look good in these." He stared at it for a moment, considering.
"How do we even know if-"
"Just try it on." I said, bringing it over, draping it around him.
"Okay but I need a sh-"
"No." I said, admiring him. "No shirt. This is perfect." His smile grew as his cheeks burned.
"Just.. just like this?" I nodded, biting down on my lip, trying not to stare for too long.
"Jaime.." He laughed, reaching out for me. I took his hand, pulling him back over to the mirror.
"See, look at him. Now.. he can come over later." I laughed. He peeked back over at me eagerly.
"Well.. if you like it." He muttered, trying to contain his grin as he turned around, admiring himself.
"I just think.. you want to be bigger than this town, well.. then you have to look like you belong somewhere.. bigger. And I think that.. this is a start." I said, smiling up at him. He sighed, leaning back down into a long kiss.
"Thank you." He whispered. I reached up, holding his face in my hands.
"And now I get to be the rockstar's girlfriend." I giggled, pulling him back into a series of kisses. I felt his lips curl into a smile as he pulled me closer.
"Do you know how long I've wanted you to say that?" He laughed, leaning his forehead against mine.
"Probably not as long as I have."
I turned at the sound of knocking to see Sam standing in the doorway, one hand over his eyes.
"Come in, Sam." I laughed, rolling my eyes. "Nothing is happening." He peeked between his fingers, grinning back, making his way in.
"What, is everyone getting a makeover?" He said, plopping down on the couch. "Why didn't I get the memo?" Jake shrugged, rolling his eyes before looking back in the mirror.

"You don't think it's.." He stopped himself, no doubt remembering what Josh had said. I know if one thing bothered him, it was feeling like he wasn't enough, so I knew that that was going to sit with him for a while.
"Doesn't he look great?" I asked, turning back to Sam, shooting him a look. He understood, smirking back at me.
"It does look good, Jake." Sam agreed, winking back at me. "So now that we've figured that out.."
"Yeah, alright. I'm coming." He said, motioning for him to leave. Sam rolled his eyes, giving me a smile before heading back out, shutting the door behind him.
"You know, you don't have to sit out there with everyone else anymore." He said, leaning in close. "I'd actually prefer.. if I could see you backstage."
"Oh, I really am a rockstar's girlfriend now." I laughed, pulling him into another long kiss.
"So.. you will?"
"Of course I will."
He guided me down the hallway, squeezing my hand tighter as we made our way into the wings.
"I can't believe how many more people are coming out." I said, peeking up at him. He kept his eyes forward, anxiously swinging our arms.
"Hey.. you okay?" I asked. He went over, grabbing his guitar and lifted it over his head.
"Yeah." He sighed, sounding anything but as he peeked out at the audience.
"You sure?" I reached out for him, gently touching his arm. He snapped out of it, looking back at me, giving me a half smile.
"Things are just.. happening so fast, and.. I don't want to blow it. We're lucky we even got this far, so.. I don't want to waste it by not doing enou-"
"Don't listen to him." I said, reaching up, gently caressing his face. His smile grew as he stared back at me, his eyes moving down to my lips. "You could go out there in anything and they'd love you because you are amazing at what you do, and everything else, it's just extra, okay?" He nodded, pulling me into a gentle kiss.
"I love you." He sighed, staring back at me with dazed eyes, glowing in deep red under the dimmed light backstage. I leaned in, kissing him again.
"And I love you. You look great, and you're gonna sound great, and everything's gonna be.. great." I laughed. He nodded, flashing me a beaming grin.
"Great." He joked. "And.. after the show, maybe we can go back-"
"We'll talk about it after."
"You ready?" Josh asked, making his way backstage. I felt my cheeks burn as he turned to me, giving me an enthusiastic smile. I don't know what had changed, but he was just.. glowing. I had never seen him like this before, but it was amazing just how much a haircut and a change of clothes could change a person for the better. I couldn't stop staring as the gems below his eyes glistened under the lights, constantly bringing my attention back to him.
"Oh, look who's trying now!" Josh said, turning to Jake, looking him up and down. "Looks good."
"It would have been nice if you told someone, maybe we could have all coordinated or something." Jake snapped, his grip on me getting tighter. "We're supposed to look like a ba-"
"Why? You did just fine on your own, though I'm sure you didn't pick that out yourself." My heart jumped as Josh looked over, winking at me. I tried to contain my smile, but it was no use. He leaned in closer to me, trying to talk over the audience that continued to get louder and louder the closer we got to show time.
"The label is throwing us a little get together down at the bar down the road. You wanna come with me?" He said simply. I felt my body get hot, now turning to Jake.
"O-oh, I didn't know that-"
"Oh yeah, I.. Um.. Yeah, I just figured that we could just do something alone.."
"It's for the label, we should all be there, right? And I'd love for you to come." Josh said, now acting like Jake wasn't even there. I turned back to him.
"Jake, if it's for the label.."
"Yeah, it'll be fun." Josh insisted, keeping his eyes locked on me. I don't know what was coming over me, but I just couldn't stop smiling, as if I was.. hypnotized.
"Fine." Jake muttered. "We'll go."
"On in five!" I heard. Josh smiled back at them, giving them a gentle nod before looking back at me, reaching out for my hand.
"Great." He said, gently kissing the top of it. "Then I'll see you there."
