《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 80: His

"So.. what made you pick some place so fancy?" I heard from Jake's room. My heart sunk. I would know that voice anywhere. Jaime was here.

I knew the two of them had been seeing each other, but that didn't make having to hear it any easier. I still would never understand how we got here. Her and I were in love, we always had been, we were finally happy together, or so I thought, until he decided to take it upon himself to swoop in and steal her away.

Despite everything, I know that no one can steal anyone from anybody. She had to have felt some type of way about him too for it to be.. so easy for her to leave, but.. I just thought that.. what we had was special. After everything we shared..

"Cause.." I heard. "Tonight is special." I couldn't bare to listen to this anymore. As happy as I was that he was finally treating a girl like this, why did it have to be my Jaime? And.. why was tonight so special? What was happening tonight?

"What makes tonight so special?" She asked. I rolled my chair over closer to the wall, listening carefully despite how much I didn't want to know.

"Because.." He said. "I've never taken you out on a nice date before."

Knowing Jake, perhaps that was really all it was. He was never one for big, romantic dates. Most of the time he'd never even consider them dates, just casual "hangouts" where they'd eventually wander up to his bedroom. None of his ex girlfriends ever got the true dating experience with him.

But now Jaime did.

And I couldn't tell if that was worse.

I rolled my chair back over to my desk, having heard enough. She was supposed to be with me, and the sooner she realized it, the better. Because no matter how long it took, unfortunately, I knew that I would always be here waiting for her.

Pulling out my notebook, I flipped back to one of the older songs I had been working on, one of the ones for her.

Won't you tell her that you love her?

And you'll hug her

Most every day

Don't you try to push or shove her

Find another

Or she'll walk away

All I ever wanted was for Jaime to be happy, no matter what that meant, because she deserved it, more than anyone. I just wished that it could have been with me. And for the longest time, I really thought it could be.

"You know, all this sneaking around is getting exhausting." Jake laughed. "Hopefully you can give me a break soon." My stomach dropped. What did that mean? I knew that it was basically her idea for them to sneak around so.. was she thinking about them.. being public now?

I wished I could have gone back to not knowing anything at all.

As I heard Jake's car pull back up to the house, I quickly hopped up, peeking out my window. He made his way around the car, opening the door and helping Jaime out. She grabbed his hand holding on tight, looking up at him with those same eyes that were once reserved for only me.

"What are you doing?" I heard from behind me. Quickly turning around I saw Sam leaning in my doorway, eventually making his way over.

"Are you spying on them?" He asked. I sighed, shaking my head.

"I'm not spying, I'm just-"

"You're spying." He laughed.

"I just.. want to make sure that-"

"Nothing happens?" He asked. I bit down on my lip, holding my stare on them, not wanting to admit that he was right.

"So.." Jake said, leaning in close to her. "I.. I had so much fun tonight." Sam eventually made his way over, now listening in too.

"Me too." She said, reaching out for his shirt, pulling him in closer to her.

"But considering.. this is supposed to be like.. a first date, I'm not gonna beg to spend the night with you." He laughed, running his fingers through her hair.

"You wouldn't have to beg." She said. My heart sunk, hating how I was now wondering how far they had actually gone, or if that was still something that was just reserved for me.

"Jaime, I'm trying to do a thing here." He laughed. "But you're making it impossible." As much as it killed me, it was hard not to enjoy seeing him so.. happy. I just wish it could have been with.. literally anyone else. Considering, he could have anyone else.

"Well, I don't want you to go." She said. I felt Sam nudge me.

"Hey, maybe you shouldn't be listening." He said softly. I shook my head, keeping my eyes locked on them.

"But then it'll give you the opportunity to miss me." He giggled, leaning in closer to her. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him into a passionate kiss.

And that's when I had seen enough.

"I don't know why you torture yourself." Sam sighed, leaning up against my desk. I spun my chair around, leaning my head back.

"I'm.. I'm not torturing myself, I just-"

"You know he's not doing this to hurt you, right? He.. he can't help how he feels, or rather.. how he's always felt."

"But.. I'm gonna let you go in." Jake said. I turned around, looking back down at them. He really wasn't going to stay over? "And I'll.. see you tomorrow?" She nodded.

"Yeah.."

"Okay."

"You sure you don't want to stay?" She asked, her grip getting tighter on him. What I would give for her to hold me like that one more time.

"Jaime, I'm trying to be a gentlemen." He laughed, leaning into another long kiss. I don't think I had ever heard him laugh like this before. There was no denying that he had it bad. And I hated it.

"But what if.. I don't want you to be?" She asked. My heart dropped. The idea of her.. wanting him like that, it made me sick.

"Jaime, I.. I think you're just drunk." He laughed, kissing her again before backing away. "I had a great night, and.. I can't wait to take you out again, okay?" Well, at least he wasn't taking advantage of her.

She nodded, leaning back against her door, holding her stare on him. I had seen that stare before, it was the same stare she had given me right before we-

"I can't leave until I've seen you go inside so I know you got home safe." He smirked. She rolled her eyes, finally grabbing her keys and letting herself in. He waited until she shut her door before skipping back down the steps, happily spinning around, practically running back to the house.

When we heard the front door open, we stayed quiet, listening in as he quickly ran up the stairs, going into his bedroom before running back down and heading back outside, slamming the door behind him.

Where was he going?

Was he actually staying over?

"No way.." Sam laughed, peeking back out the window. "He's really going to-"

"Going to what?" I asked, looking outside again to see him now standing under Jaime's window with his boom box, pressing play before holding it over his head. I heard Sam giggling to himself, shaking his head.

"Oh, he's in way too deep now."

As much as I hated it, I couldn't help but smile, knowing just how much Jaime would love it. All she ever wanted were moments straight out of the movies, and he was finally giving them to her.

I was happy for her.

It didn't take long for her to make her way over to her window, staring down at him with tears in her eyes. It was so magical, to see her in this lovestruck glow, as badly as I wished it was for me.

"You didn't think I was really just going to leave you after a night like this, did you?" He asked. She wiped her eyes, shaking her head.

"I really hoped not."

"Jaime, I swear the only tears I will ever make you cry ever again will always be happy ones. You deserve nothing but the best, and I will do whatever it takes to give that to you.. if you'll let me." She nodded again.

"I know you wanted to wait but.. with what time we have left, I just.. every second I'm not yours is just.. a second wasted, so.. I have something to ask you."

My stomach dropped.

I was going to be sick.

"And.. what's that?" She asked, wiping her eyes again.

"Jaime, will you be my girlfriend?"

And there it was. After all these years of never having asked any of the girls he's "dated," Jaime was the first one who got to experience him.. like this. Just another first they would get to experience together.

She quickly ran out of her room, practically sprinting out of her front door, now in her pajamas and bare feet, jumping into his arms, wrapping hers tightly around his neck, pulling him into a passionate kiss.

She looked.. so happy.

"Those are happy tears, right?" He asked. She nodded, giggling to herself. I really hoped he meant it, because if I ever had to see her cry over him the way she did the other night, I don't think I could handle it.

"Yes." She finally sighed, as I felt my heart break in two. "I'll be your girlfriend."

And just like that.. she was his.
