《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 71: Blinded

As we made our way into the house, I grabbed the pile of mail sitting on the counter and began flipping through, hoping there weren't any more bills we had missed. It was hard enough keeping up with the ones we could.

"You want coffee?" Jake asked, going over to the cabinet.

"Sure." I called out, peeking over at him as he grabbed two mugs, placing them down in front of the coffee maker like he had done this a thousand times.

For a moment, I got lost in the daydream of us coming home together, drinking our coffee in the kitchen, talking about the day until we eventually moseyed up to our bedroom, slowly drifting off asleep as our words slurred into quiet mumbles, and eventually light snores.

I continued flipping through until I got to a white envelope with beautiful dark green calligraphy.

Emily Thompson & Sam Jefferson request the pleasure of your company at their marriage on the twentieth of August at Three O'Clock. Followed by dinner, drinks, and dancing.

Angela Adams and guest

Jaime Adams and guest.

Sam and Emily had been our neighbors for as long as we could remember, the cutest old couple you've ever seen, both having found each other after their first spouses had passed away, but deep down, they always felt like soul mates to me. After all these years, it was so sweet that they were finally getting married.

"What's that?" Jake asked, carefully carrying over both mugs, placing mine down in front of me as he sat across from me at the counter. I slid it over to him, taking a big sip, feeling the warmth slowly travel all the way down.

"That's sweet." He said softly. "And look at that.. you got a plus one." I felt my cheeks burn as he smirked back at me, sliding the invite back over. I knew what he was implying.

"I'm sure you were invited too." I said, avoiding his eyes.

"Oh good, so we'll both be going. What a coincidence. Why don't we just.. go together?" He asked, biting down on his lip to contain his smile. I felt my heart beat faster, the idea of him all dressed up. I'm sure he would look so handsome.

"Like.. as your date?" I asked reluctantly.

"Or I could be your date, however you want to word it." He giggled to himself, taking another sip of his coffee.

"And what would we tell people? When they asked.." I trailed off. He shrugged nonchalantly, though I knew how much this meant to him.

"We could tell them whatever you wanted." He said. "We could just say.. we're together."

"But we're not.. together." I muttered, smirking back at him.

"Jaime.."

"Jake.." I mocked, avoiding his eyes again, taking another sip. My heart jumped as he reached over for my hand.

"Can I ask why?"

"You can ask." I mumbled, peeking back at him. He smiled back at me, shaking his head.

"Okay.. is it because I haven't asked you yet?" I could feel my face getting hot again.

"Partly." He nodded again, his smile growing.

"So, if I were to ask you-"

"What did you do for your other girlfriends?" I asked, trying to somewhat change the subject. He was quiet for a moment, holding his stare on me.

"I.. I never really did.. anything." He finally said. "I never knew that.. people really did that. I always thought that was just.. 'movie' stuff." My stomach dropped, subtly nodding.

"Oh.." He sighed, now intertwining our fingers.

"Jaime, I never did those things because.. I never wanted to for them. Plain and simple. I'm sorry if that sounds bad but.. I didn't. But.. for you-"

"I want 'movie' stuff." I said. He gave me a gentle smile.

"Then you get 'movie' stuff."

"But.. I want you to do it because.. you want to. Not because I asked for it."

"I'd give you anything, Jaime." He said softly, now looking down at our hands, his fingers gently gliding over mine, making my heart race.

"Okay." I sighed. His smile grew as he looked back up at me.

"So.. is that a yes?" I shook my head, giggling to myself. Despite the fact that every moment with him felt like a movie, it still wasn't what I imagined.

"It's a maybe." He nodded, bringing my hand up to his lips, gently kissing it.

"Jaime, can I show you something?" I nodded. He took another sip of his coffee, putting down his cup before getting up.

"Okay, I just.. I gotta go get something. I'll.. I'll meet you in your room."

"O-okay." I managed as he made his way over, pulling me in, gently kissing me on the cheek before heading out the front door. I watched him as he made his way out, shutting the door behind him, wondering what he could possibly have to show me, but I didn't ask questions. I grabbed both of our mugs and head upstairs, curling into bed, placing them down next to me on my end table.

Two cups was a good look.

I didn't have to wait long before he made his way in with his guitar slung behind his back, flashing me a smile as he made his way over, sitting down close to me on the edge of my bed. I moved in further, only wanting to be closer.

"So.. I wrote you something the other night." He admitted, bringing his guitar around and placing it in his lap, giving me a nervous smile. "And.. I know I'm secretive with what I write, especially about you but.. I feel like.. you need to hear it. You've been honest with me and.. I know I need to be more.. vulnerable with you. And it's not easy but.. I know I can be, if you give me some time, just like you need time. And.. I promise to stop pushing you, if you can trust that I've never been more genuine.. than I've been with you."

I couldn't help but smile, unable to break the trance his eyes always held me captive within, though if it were up to me, I'd live within it forever.

"Okay." I whispered, pulling him into a gentle kiss. I felt him gently caress my face, kissing me back harder until his lips curled into a playful grin.

"Alright, let me get through this and then.. there can be plenty more of that." He laughed, his cheeks now burning red. I nodded, sitting back, admiring him as he took a deep breath, holding his stare on me before eventually beginning to play.

I could barely concentrate, knowing I'd have to have him play it for me again, as I got lost in this daydream, replaying our entire lives together up until this moment. Every glance, every touch I might have missed, every chance that neither of us decided to take that could have saved us so many years of wondering, wishing, wanting. If we had only seen what was right in front of us the entire time, this all could have been so easy.

As he finished, I didn't hesitate to move the guitar out of his lap, holding his face in my hands and pulling him into a passionate kiss. I felt him sigh as he held me closer, kissing me back harder. When I finally backed away, he stared up at me with a beaming grin, his eyes in a daze, his cheeks flushed red with affection.

"Jaime, we.. we may not be sure where this is going, but.. I'm just so happy that it's happening. Thank you for showing me how nice it is to.. finally feel so much. I don't mean to push you, I've just.. I've never been this excited about someone before. I feel.. so safe with you."

I could feel my heart melting in my chest, this time knowing that no one else had ever heard these words from him before. I was held captive in a lovesick haze, never wanting to break free from his devoted grasp.

"I L-Word you." I laughed, pulling him into another long kiss, feeling him smile, but refusing to pull away, tangling his fingers in my hair, eventually leaning his forehead against mine.

"I L-Word you, too."
