《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 38: Be Alone

As Josh and I pulled up to the house, I could already hear everyone from the driveway. It sounded like the whole town was there. He put the car in park, turning towards me.
"Did you hear anything yet?" He asked. "From the hospital?" I shook my head, avoiding his eyes.
"Well, sometimes no news is good news, right?" I nodded. He wasn't wrong, especially when it came to her. I just hated also having to worry about her like this on his special night. I could never just fully enjoy.. anything.
"Well, if you do hear anything, just tell me. And we'll both go." I peeked back up, giving him a gentle smile.
"I won't pull you away from your night. You deserve to be celebrated like this." He shrugged.
"I don't want to be here if you're not here, Jaime. I want to be where you are, always." I leaned over, pulling him into a long kiss.
He made it so easy to love him.
"I don't know what I did to deserve you, but.. I'm glad I did it." I laughed, leaning my forehead against his.
"That's funny. I say the same thing."
I looked back over to see more and more people piling into their backyard. Years ago I would have hated this, knowing that at some point he would have to leave me to entertain, but now..
"You ready to head in?" He asked, flashing me an eager grin. I could tell, despite how calm he tried to act, he was so excited. As he should be. I nodded, pulling him into one more kiss, wanting to savor getting to be alone with him for just a few more seconds.
"And you know.." He added, smirking back at me. "If.. you happen to drink too much, it would just be safer if you spent the night. You know, we don't wanna risk anything." I couldn't help but smile, feeling my cheeks burn.
"Right.. cause driving home would be so dangerous." He nodded, giggling to himself.
"Exactly so.. don't feel like you need to hold back. You've got a place to stay. And by place I mean my room. With me." I playfully shook my head, reaching over for my door.

"Hey, wait.." He said, quickly getting out of the car, making his way around to my side.
"I told you, you don't have to-" He leaned down, stealing another quick kiss before taking my hand and helping me out of the car.
"You can fight me on a lot of things, Jaime. But.. I'm gonna take care of you. However I can. So, please just let me. It'll make things a whole lot easier."
"Okay." I sighed, taking his hand as he helped me out, tightly intertwining our fingers and leading us into the backyard.
"What are you having?" He asked, leaning down close. I looked over at the table across the lawn, already able to tell what kind of night this was going to be. "The wine seemed to work last time." I felt my cheeks burn, smirking up at him.
"Wine it is." He winked back at me, grabbing two cups.
Majority of the night was spent following him around as he was congratulated by everyone, talking about how good of a job he did and how they couldn't wait for the next show. I loved getting to experience everyone giving him the recognition he finally deserved.
"Sorry about this." He muttered, giving me an apologetic smile. I shook my head, pulling him into a quick kiss.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. Tonight is about you, and I love getting to be the rockstar's girlfriend."
"Rockstar is generous, Jaime." He laughed. "Very generous."
"I wish you could see yourself how everyone else sees you." He held his stare on me for a moment before reaching over and pulling me into a long kiss.
And in a flash, I was seeing double, the ground now moving beneath my feet. It was so easy to lose track of time with him, and just as easy to lose track of the pours and empty bottles filling up the table, and even easier to finally get wrapped up in being one of "those" couples after years and years of going to their backyard parties, and neither one of us being brave enough to finally make that first move. But this time he didn't wait until the rest of them broke off with their person.
He just decided it was time for us to be alone.

After talking to what felt like everyone at the party, he finally took my hand, leading me back into the house. The instant silence was nice as I closely followed him into the living room, plopping down next to him on the couch. Wrapping one arm around me, he pulled me in close, grabbing one of my legs, and draping it over his. I cuddled closer, our faces now inches apart.
"Jaime, can I.. talk to you about something?" He said softly, brushing the hair out of my face. His eyes were bloodshot and tired, his cheeks flushed red.
"Of course." I said, grabbing onto his shirt, pulling him in closer to me. His eyes moved down to my lips as his fingers lightly traced my chin, eventually finding their way into my hair.
"And.. I want you to be honest." I felt my heart start beating faster.
"Okay."
"Do you.. really think anything could ever happen with the band? I know that.. everyone here is supportive and that's great but.. there just comes a time when-"
"Yes." I said, quickly cutting him off. "I wouldn't want you telling people those songs were about me if you weren't any good, think how that would make me look." I joked. He shook his head, flashing me a toothy grin.
"I'm being serious, Jaime." He laughed, his fingers now gliding up and down my arm.
"So am I. You are one of the most talented people I have ever met, no matter what you do. I know that whatever you commit yourself to, you're going to be amazing. If it wasn't something you enjoyed, I wouldn't be pushing you but.. I wish you could have seen yourself up there tonight. You looked.. so happy." He nodded, his smile growing.
"I was. It was.. one of the happiest moments of my life."
"One of?" I asked. He shrugged, shyly looking away. "What are the others?"
"All different things.." He said softly. "But.. my favorite was.. when you said yes to being my girlfriend." I started to feel tears coming to my eyes, knowing that the wine was really starting to hit.
I reached up, gently holding his face in my hands, pulling him into a passionate kiss. He kissed me back harder, his hand slowly moving up my leg. I could feel my heart beating faster as I tangled my fingers into his hair, now hearing his breath getting heavier as my kisses moved down to his neck, gently making their way up.
Could something finally be happening tonight?
I didn't want to push it, knowing we agreed that he would tell me when he was ready. But I couldn't help but wonder when he started to get like this.
I backed away, noticing his eyelids getting even heavier, his grip on me getting looser. I wasn't keeping track, but I definitely knew he had more to drink than I did.
"Josh.." I whispered, kissing him again. I felt him smile as he stared back at me sleepily. I knew that look. He was going to be out like a light within minutes. So much for anything happening.
"Come on.. I'll take you to bed." I said softly, getting up and taking his hand.
"I'm fine." He groaned, leaning back, his eyes finally closing.
"You'll be much more comfortable if you just went to sleep, come on, I'll help you." I said, trying to pull him up. He groaned again, shaking his head.
"It's best if you just leave him." I heard from behind me. I turned around to see Jake leaning in the doorway, smirking back at me. "I've had to deal with this loads of times. Not worth it to try and move him. Just let him lay where he drops." I sighed, finally letting go.
"We're all still hanging outside, if you want to come back out. He's not gonna be up for hours." He laughed, motioning over to Josh. "No reason your night has to end just because he's a lightweight." I bit down on my lip, peeking back at him, feeling like I should be there for him just in case he did wake up.
"He's not waking up, Jaime. Don't worry. Come on."
I hesitated for a moment, holding my stare on him. He held his hand out, motioning towards the back door. I sighed, trying my best to contain my smile and blushing face as I reached out, taking his hand.
"Okay."
