《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 37: Too Soon

They were amazing.
Even better than I could have hoped.
I could instantly tell who was here from the label by the way Jake kept avoiding eye contact with the front row, flashing me a smile here and there throughout the show. It was smart of him not to tell the rest of the guys. I don't think I've seen Josh have that much fun in a long time, I couldn't stop smiling the entire time.
Looking around, I couldn't see Cait or her friends anywhere. I assumed she decided to leave in the middle when she realized Jake was playing the best show of his life. It felt like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. If nothing happened after this, then who knows what they were looking for.
He was incredible.
They all were.
"Alright, our last song of the night is pretty special because.. the girl who inspired it is here with us tonight. I won't point her out and embarrass her but.. she knows who she is." Josh said, quickly peeking over at me. My heart jumped, now unable to contain my smile. "Thank you all for coming out tonight, and thank you for letting us get to do this. We hope you had a great time."
And then he started to sing, and it felt like we were the only two in the room, instantly bringing me back to their old couch in their garage, getting to hear them play it for the first time. I tried my best to hold back my tears as I felt their mom wrap her arm around me. I peeked up at her, wiping my eyes to see her already smiling down at me.
She is a lady, comes from all around
So many places, but she's homeward bound
And now she walks kinda funny
I think she knows
Day by day by day
Our love grows
She's a lantern in the night
She's outta sight
He was so beautiful up there, like he belonged there. It would be a shame for him to give it all up before he even got the chance to see how amazing he really was. I hoped he'd change his mind on his own after tonight, record deal or not.

As they finished, the room erupted into a boisterous cheers, little by little every row standing up to applaud them until finally the man in the front put down his notepad and joined them, smiling for the first time all night.
That had to be a great sign.
They took their bows, waving out one more time before making their way backstage, Josh trailing behind. He scanned the crowd one last time before his eyes stopped on me, his smile growing into a toothy grin, as he blew me a kiss. My heart jumped. I blew him one back, continuing to cheer until he disappeared into the wings.
"I'm gonna go meet up with them." I said, trying my best to yell over the continued applause. I pushed my way through the crowd, all seemingly with the same idea as me. As I got to the doors, there was security outside, keeping people away.
"Hi, I just need to-"
"No one's allowed backstage. Wait outside." He snapped. I peeked past him, trying to catch someone's attention. It didn't take long for Jake to notice, quickly making his way over to the door.
"She's with us." He snapped, shooting him a look. He took my hand and guided me in, smirking back at me with excited eyes when we were finally out of view from everyone in the lobby.
"That was.. insane! Oh my god!" I yelled, pulling him into a tight hug. He nodded, holding onto me tightly until I let go, now leaning back against the wall. He was still sweaty from the show, his face red, still catching his breath.
"I.. I can't believe.. all of this." He laughed, motioning back towards the door.
"Jake, you were incredible. There is no way he's not going to sign you. That was.." He bit down on his lip, giggling to himself.
"Thank you, Jaime."
"Did you tell them yet? Have you heard anything? When do you know?" I asked, feeling like I was more excited than him now.
"I'm not really sure." He said. "I've.. I've never done this. I really don't know how it works but.. he seemed to like it, right? Did you see him?"

"Yeah, I saw you avoiding him all night." I laughed. He smirked back at me, his smile growing.
"Was it that obvious?"
"Only a little." My cheeks burned as he held his stare on me, his eyes in a daze once again. I don't know what it was, but when he looked at me like that, I just-
"Jaime!" I heard from down the hall. I turned to see Josh quickly making his way over, wrapping me into a tight hug, spinning me around. "How'd you like the show?" I couldn't help but reach up, pulling him into a passionate kiss.
"You're.. incredible." I sighed. He flashed me a toothy grin.
"You really think so? I.. I hope you didn't mind me telling everyone-"
"I loved it." I pulled him into another kiss, gently running my fingers through his hair. "I always hoped that one was about me."
Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Jake push himself back off from the wall.
"I'll see you guys back at the house.." He muttered, avoiding our eyes as he pushed pass. What was his deal? Just a few seconds ago he was-
"I didn't want to make you uncomfortable, I just.. I want the whole world to know that.. I'm all yours." He really did make me feel like the luckiest girl in the world. This was what people dreamed about and here I was, getting to live it, and with him. It all felt like a dream and it was only a matter of time before I woke up, but I preyed that I never did.
"Does this change your mind about.. everything?" I asked reluctantly, now wrapping my arms around his neck. He smirked back at me, pulling me in closer.
"It might." He sighed, playfully rolling his eyes. "That was fun. And.. you're right. I don't have to pick one or the other yet. There's still time to enjoy both."
"And write me more songs." I laughed, pulling him into another kiss. I could feel him smile as he kissed me back. He then leaned in, whispering softly into my ear.
"Jaime, I will be writing songs for you for as long as I live."
I stared back up at him as he nervously stared back, biting down on his lip, his cheeks burning so red, I couldn't tell if he was blushing or still worked up from the show.
"Jaime, I lo-"
"There's the superstar!" Sam shouted, quickly making his way down the hall. "I've never seen you like that! Where the hell did that come from?" He pulled Josh away from me, bringing him into a headlock as he messed up his hair. Josh pulled away, running his fingers through it as he flashed me an apologetic look. Sam then turned to me, flashing me a wide grin as he propped his hands up onto his hips.
"You're coming back to the house right? Huge get together to celebrate." I nodded, forcing a smile, having a feeling that Sam has just intruded on one of the biggest moments I had been waiting for my entire life. He couldn't tell the difference.
"Awesome! Have you seen Jake anywhere? He just disappeared after we got off."
"Uh.. yeah, he just left, down the hall." I said, motioning towards the door. He nodded, flashing me another smile before following after him.
I heard Josh sigh as he came back over, taking my hand again.
"What were you saying?" I asked eagerly, just wanting him to spit it out at this point, but how stupid I would feel if I was wrong. I knew it was soon but.. for us it felt anything but. I knew how I felt, and.. especially after tonight, I had suspicions that.. he felt the same way too. Maybe?
When you've gone your whole life loving someone, too soon couldn't come soon enough.
"I, um.." He started, finally looking back at me. "I was just.. gonna ask if you were gonna come back with us tonight, but.. well, Sam, and.. so.. okay. Let me just get changed and then we can head out, alright?" I sighed, my face dropping.
"Okay." I muttered, trying to force a smile. He leaned in, gently kissing my cheek before quickly making his way back to his dressing room.

Deeper Darker

Ancient cities, abandoned starships, temples and fortified bunkers all contain artefacts and devices far in advance of what humans have been able to produce. Technology that feels more akin to magic, so powerful it can allow a single person to dominate a star system. But these relics of another time have been left well-defended and behind bewildering and impenetrable security measures. There are those who are compatible with the alien technology, who can augment themselves to face the evermore extreme protocols in the depths of the alien ruins, and by doing so attain greater power. And there are those who just want to sell what they find to the highest bidder. The rewards are high, but you have to be prepared to go further and risk more to discover the greatest secrets of a civilisation that vanished long before the first human walked upright. Secrets that could irrevocably change humanity’s future, or end it.
8 456Meek
After failing as an apprentice cooper and a town guard, Eli finds his place at the Rockbridge archives. Sure, he's the oldest 'junior scribe,' but he likes the job. And he's good at it, too. Then he completes an apparently-insignificant project, and the brutal reaction shocks him--with consequences that eventually shake the world. Eli gains powers. Rare and inhuman abilities. He progresses slowly, steadily, and not without setbacks. He changes, too. Is he a hero, a villain, a human, a monster? Depends who you ask. Meek is an epic fantasy with elements of progression. The basic magic is simple: five Paths, each with a different powerset. However, complexity arises from combinations, and the protagonist wields a magic all his own. Meek is set in the Valley, the only (as far as anyone knows) human empire that survived a Final Battle against a terrible foe. The Valley is warded against infiltration, but the enemy learned how to warp human souls, to foment discord within. However, another soul is also ... changed. Perhaps even 'warped.' And that soul is starting on a long (long, long) path that might, one day, prove that the Final Battle wasn't so final after all.
