《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 27: You

We stayed with her for as long as we could before they eventually came in to kick us out.
"I'm sorry.." Her nurse said, looking over at me apologetically. "But visiting hours are over." I nodded, leaning down and pulling her into as much of a hug as she could manage while being hooked up to what seemed like every machine possible.
"I'm so happy you had a great night." She whispered, squeezing me tight. "I'm so sorry I ruined it." I shook my head, giggling to myself.
"You didn't ruin anything. I'm happy I could share it with you." She nodded, now looking over at Josh who leaned in for a hug too. I noticed her whisper something into his ear. He nodded.
"Well, enjoy what's left of your night." She finally said. "I'll talk to you tomorrow. They should know in the morning how I'm healing and when I'll be able to come home."
"Okay." I said, now lingering in the doorway. Every time I left one of her rooms, I was never sure if it would be the last time; I savored every second. "Goodnight, Mom."
"Goodnight, Sweetie." She said cheerfully. "And goodnight to you too, Josh." He smiled, giving her a gentle wave.
"Goodnight, Mrs. Adams."
I instantly grabbed his hand, tightly intertwining our fingers as we made our way down the hall in silence. He eventually wrapped his arm around me, pulling me in and kissing the top of my head.
As he opened the passenger's side door, I hopped in, turning back around to face him. He leaned up against the car, staring back at me before eventually reaching over, gently touching my cheek.
"Thank you for being here." I said softly, avoiding his eyes.
"I told you, I'm always going to be here." I nodded, feeling my heart beat faster.
"I really am sorry-"
"Don't be sorry, Jaime. I'm just happy that everything's okay." He said simply, giving me a gentle smile. I nodded again, reaching back up for him, grabbing onto his shirt and pulling him into a gentle kiss.
"You ready to head home?" He sighed, leaning his forehead against mine. I eventually nodded, letting go of him as he made his way around to the driver's side. I reached over for his hand again as we drove the rest of the way home in silence.

As he pulled up to the front of the house, I felt my heart start to beat faster, my hands now sweating. He peeked over at me, giving me a timid smile.
"Can I.. walk you to your door?" He asked. I nodded, feeling my cheeks burn. He hopped out of the car, quickly making his way over to my side, opening my door for me.
"I told you, you don't have to-"
"Yes, I do. Now come on." He laughed, holding my hand again, gently swinging our arms as he slowly lead me up the the door, obviously taking his time. I didn't mind.
I reached into my bag, grabbing my keys when I felt his hands on my waist, pulling me in closer.
"Is this the moment you wanted?" I asked, giggling to myself. He nodded, his eyes moving down to my lips.
"Yes.." He sighed. "If.. if that's okay?" I couldn't help but smile, wrapping my arms around him and pulling him into a passionate kiss. He instantly gripped me tighter, pulling me up against him as he kissed me back, his hands slowly moving up to my neck, and into my hair. I thought my heart was going to burst when he finally moved away, leaning his forehead against mine. He stared back at me with eyes that could make me melt right into the floor, eyes that were made just for me.
How badly I wanted him to stay with me again. After falling asleep next to the one you.. liked this much, it felt impossible to sleep alone ever again. But.. it was only our first date, and I didn't want to push anything. Unless he asked..
He lightly caressed my cheek, leaning in for one more gentle kiss before backing away.
"Goodnight, Jaime." He finally sighed. I nodded, unlocking my door before leaning in again for another.
"Goodnight, Josh." I hesitated for a moment, holding my stare on him before finally forcing myself to go inside, peeking back at him one last time before shutting the door behind me. I waited until I heard his footsteps making their way back down the sidewalk before I quickly ran up the stairs, trying to contain my giddy squeals of excitement.
I bit down on my lip, trying to contain my beaming smile, but it was no use. I shoved my hands into my pockets, practically skipping down the sidewalk back to our house. Tonight was perfect. Despite having to be in the hospital, I know that deep down Jaime was excited to get to share everything with her mom after knowing she was going to be okay.

I couldn't imagine what Jaime went through on a daily basis, not knowing what to expect every morning when you woke up, and I prayed I'd never have to find out, but from here on out, she would never have to go through it alone. I was hers and she was mine and.. I had no intention of that ever changing.
I quietly made my way into the kitchen, now aware of just how late it was. I had lost track of time hours ago; I never kept tabs when I was with Jaime, all I knew is I never wanted the night to end.
"Well, you're home late." I heard from behind me. I jumped, my body going cold as I saw Jake sitting at the counter.
"Oh.. it's just you." I sighed, leaning up against the stove. "Y-yeah, um, while we were out, Jaime's mom was rushed into surgery so.. I took her to see her after she got out and we just stayed there until they kicked us out."
"How's Jaime? Is she okay?" He asked, his face dropping.
"She's okay, her moms okay, we're gonna find out in the morning what happens next." He nodded, avoiding my eyes.
"Well, sorry your night was cut off.." He muttered. "Guess there's always nex-"
"She said yes." I blurted out, unable to contain my smile. "Before everything happened, we walked through the park and I brought her down to the gazebo by the water and.. I just.. asked her." He stared back at me, his face not changing. Not even a smile.
"O-oh.." He finally sighed. "Well.. t-that's.. that's great. I'm.. I'm happy for you." I nodded, holding my stare on him.
Interesting considering he looked anything but.
"Thanks. But.. I'm gonna head to bed. I gotta be up early tomorrow in case she needs a ride to the hospital."
"Can't she drive?" He asked. I shrugged, another smile escaping my lips.
"She can, but.. I'm her boyfriend now, so I should be doing these things for her." I said, leaving it at that.
For some reason he wasn't happy for me, but I wasn't going to let that ruin my night. I had been dreaming about this day my entire life, and I wasn't going to let anyone ruin it. I had been there for him through every new relationships for years, the least he could do was be there for me when I finally got the girl of my dreams.
I skipped up the stairs to my room to see the light still on in hers. Plopping down in my chair, I rolled over to my window to see her already sitting at hers, giving me a gentle wave. I flashed her a wide grin, waving back when I felt my phone start to vibrate. Looking down, I saw her name pop up on the screen.
"You?" I mouthed to her, holding it up. She nodded as I saw the phone up to her ear.
"Funny seeing you here." I laughed.
"I was just thinking the same thing."
"So, how was your night? You're up late. Must have been pretty good."
"Oh, it was amazing. I went out with the cutest boy, he was so sweet, I can't wait to see him again."
"Well, I'm sure he feels the same way about you." I sighed. My face was starting to hurt from smiling so big.
"You really think so?" She asked, now leaning up against the window sill. I rolled closer.
"I know so."
"It's just a shame that.. he had to go home. I already miss him. I kinda wish that.. he was here with me now." She said, her smile growing. My heart jumped. She wanted me to come back?
"Jaime, I'm sure he would love nothing more than to be with you again. If you wanted him to."
"I really want him to." She said softly, now sounding more serious. "I.. I hate being alone in my house. It's hard enough with-"
"I'll be right there."

Why is it so ? Unfortunately, his true story is one that is untold to people and is deformed as a fiction to scare little children after his death, despite everything, he was not completely forgotten.
