《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 24: Before Everything Changed

My heart started beating faster as I turned down our street, pulling into the driveway. I couldn't wait to see where he was taking us, but knowing him, no matter where it was, I knew everything was going to go.. perfectly.
As I parked the car, I saw him walk out of his front door, bouquet of flowers in hand. A smile escaped my lips, so big my face started to hurt. I didn't think that boys actually got flowers for their dates. I thought that was just something that happened in the movies, just like every other cliche that made girls feel bad about themselves if their dates never lived up to the men of their daydreams.
But deep down, I think that the real reason I had waited so long to finally start dating was because I always had a feeling that once it was finally with him, that this would be my first and last "first date."
He flashed me a wide grin, giving me a gentle wave as he made his way over, tightly clutching the flowers against his chest. I had never seen lavender roses before. Where would someone even get lavender roses?
If anyone could, it was him.
He looked so handsome; his shirt perfectly matching the flowers, making me wonder if he had planned it, which would make him that much more adorable. I always felt like guys never took dates as seriously as girls did. Now I didn't feel silly for dressing up. But I wouldn't have cared what he wore, because nothing compared to the way his eyes lit up as they met mine.
All of the nerves that had built up throughout the day completely melted away as he stood in front of me, giving me a gentle smile, handing me the bouquet.
"You look.. beautiful." He sighed, his smile growing into a toothy grin. My cheeks burned as I looked away, admiring the flowers.
"Thank you." I said, finally looking back up at him. "I.. I should bring these inside before we leave." He nodded, following me as I made my way towards my front door. I reached back, gently taking one of his hands, feeling my heart jump as he intertwined our fingers.
"Here, I got it." He said, reaching out, opening the door for me. I lead him into the kitchen where he took the flowers from my hands and started looking around.

"What are you doing?" I asked, leaning back against the counter.
"Where do you keep your vases?" He asked, opening one of the cabinets.
"Oh, um.. we.. I don't know if we.. have any." I muttered.
No one had ever gotten me flowers before.
He stopped looking, turning back to face me.
"Well.. that's gonna change." He said simply, giving me a gentle smile. He finally grabbed a glass pitcher from above the stove, placing the flowers inside.
"This works for now." He laughed, filling it with water.
"You're funny." He shrugged, moving them around, positioning them perfectly. I couldn't help but wonder if he had done this before.
"I do this for mom all the time." He said, as if reading my mind. "She never wants us to spend our money on her, so we typically pick them from our garden or whatever we can find in the woods, and then we do what we can to make them pretty."
"That's so cute." He smirked back at me, his face getting redder.
"So, are.. you ready to go?" He asked, reaching his hand out for me again. I nodded grabbing ahold, intertwining our fingers as he lead us back out to his car. Making his way around, he opened my door, motioning me inside. I bit down on my lip, trying my best to contain my smile as I held my stare on him, wanting to appreciate these last few minutes before.. everything changed.
"Well, look at you." I heard from behind me as I made my way into the kitchen. I felt my face get hot as I turned around to see mom sitting at the counter, smirking at me from over her coffee cup. "And where are you going all dressed up?"
"I.. um.." I muttered, a smile escaping my lips. She shook her head, her smile growing.
"I know where you're going, Sam already told me." I sighed, going over and grabbing the roses from the counter.
"Of course he did." I laughed, shaking my head.
"I think it's very sweet, honey. We were all wondering when this would finally happen."
"Yeah, yeah.." I joked, avoiding her eyes.
"Do you know when you'll be getting home?" She asked. I shook my head, fixing my hair in the mirror one last time.

"You look fine, don't worry."
"Okay, thank you, Mom." I laughed, rolling my eyes, heading out the door.
My heart jumped as I saw Jaime pulling into her driveway, instantly looking over at me as I made my way down the front steps and across the lawn. I flashed her a wide grin, giving her a gentle wave as she got out of the car.
And in that moment, it felt like my heart had stopped.
She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.
I was instantly brought back to the days when we would play house in my backyard. Me always the dad, and her always the mom as our stuffed animal kids sat around the little playhouse kitchen table. She would make us all plastic dinner after I got home from pretend-work, and she would kiss my cheek before placing the toy food down in front of me, because that's what she saw my parents do when she would come over for dinner. I would always try my best not to react, because Dad never did when Mom would kiss him, but I could never understand how he could remain so calm at a time like that, when the love of his life wanted nothing more than to just be with him.
"You look.. beautiful." I sighed, handing her the bouquet, unable to take my eyes off of her. She was wearing her favorite yellow dress that she saved for special occasions. I knew because she always mentioned how pretty she felt when she wore it, but it didn't matter what she wore.
She was radiant in everything.
She took the flowers, admiring them with a giddy smile, now making me want to plant her acres upon acres of flowers if it meant making her smile like this everyday.
"Thank you." She said softly. "I.. I should bring these inside before we leave." I nodded, following her closely as she made her way towards her front door. She then reached back, gently taking my hand. I felt my body get hot as I timidly intertwined our fingers. She pulled me in closer.
"Here, I got it." I said, reaching out and opening the door for her. She lead me into the kitchen where I took the flowers and started looking around for a vase. The last thing I wanted her to do was give her a job after giving her a gift.
"What are you doing?"
"Where do you keep your vases?" I asked, peeking into one of the cabinets. I couldn't remember the last time I was in Jaime's house. Ever since her mom got sick, she always insisted on coming over instead of having us. I didn't mind, but there was once a time where I knew every inch of their house like it was my own.
I missed those days.
"Oh, um.. we.. I don't know if we.. have any." She muttered, her face dropping. I stopped, looking back at her. She didn't have any vases? But.. I just assumed everyone had vases lying around after receiving-
My stomach dropped.
"Well.. that's gonna change." I said simply, flashing her a smile. She would soon have to dedicate an entire cabinet to all the vases she would have from all the flowers I would get for her from now on.
I finally found a glass pitcher above her stove, placing the flowers inside.
"This works for now." I laughed, filling it with water.
"You're funny." She said, giggling to herself. My heart jumped.
I'd do anything to make her laugh, every day, for the rest of her life.
I moved the flowers around, positioning them as perfectly as I could manage.
"I do this for my mom all the time." I said, not wanting her to think she was just someone else I got flowers for. She was special. She would always be special. "She never wants us to spend our money on her, so we typically pick them from our garden or whatever we can find in the woods, and then we do what we can to make them pretty."
"That's so cute."
"So, are.. you ready to go?" I asked, reaching my hand out for her again. She nodded, grabbing on and intertwined our fingers as I lead us back out to my car. Making my way around, I opened her door, motioning her inside. She looked back up at me, biting down on her lip, giving me a gentle smile. I held my stare on her, wanting to appreciate these last few minutes before everything changed.

As the world grows darker day by day, this unfortunate journey begins ------------ I suppose rectitude dictates that I should state any themes worthy of noting here. First of all, this story is not a sunshiny one in the slightest. Since it is listed under the psychological and mature tag and not the comedy tag, that shouldn't be a surprise. Next, morbidity is a factor and general apathy towards human life. All of these are common themes amongst other writers, so nothing new there. The story also contains consensual, and non-consensual sexual activity, although I have tried to be as tasteful as is possible for someone like myself. Finally, the pace is drawn-out, and the language is magniloquent at times. Not to mention, the chapters are quite lengthy. Don't expect to read this halfheartedly... Other than that, enjoy the story... There's nothing more important than that...
