"What did he want?" Jake called out. I felt my heart beating faster. What did Josh mean.. last time? Another bender? I went back out into the living room, handing Jake his phone.

"Um.. I.. I think you should call him back." I said softly, sitting back down on the couch. He sat up, staring at me wide-eyed.

"W-why? What did he say?"

"It's.. it's Sam." Jake's face dropped, now looking annoyed.

"What about Sam? Why can't he handle it?" I shook my head.

"I.. I just think you should call him back."

He sighed, shaking his head, going back into the kitchen. I sat down on the floor next to Sophie, picking up one of her toys, holding it out to her. She smiled up at me, taking it and holding it close. I couldn't help but smile as she crawled into my lap, leaning her head against my chest, slowly starting to fall asleep as I softly rubbed her back. I felt tears start to come to my eyes again as I leaned down, gently kissing the top of her head.

"No, that was Jess. Josh, what is going on?" I heard from the kitchen. My stomach dropped. I could already tell.. our night was over.

"No, I can't just come back. Addison still isn't home, and Jess and I.. well, why can't you talk to him... then what makes you think I'm gonna be able to do anything about it? If anything, don't you think I would just make it worse?.. No, she is not going anywhere near him, definitely not when he's like this.. No, I already have a reservation for us to.. really? You're gonna rub that in my face now? Well, you sure wasted no time making sure you had something for her.. whatever, we're not talking about this now.. I can't come back.. Josh.." He sighed, and was quiet for a moment. I could hear more muffled yelling coming through the phone.

"Fine.. once Addison gets home.. we'll come back." He said softly. "Yeah, whatever. See you then, just.. make sure he doesn't do anything stupid. We have a show tomorrow. Yeah, alright. Bye." He muttered, tossing his phone away. I held Sophie closer as her head perked up at the sound of it loudly hitting the counter. I could feel her tiny hands tightly clinging onto my shirt, nervously peeking out from over my shoulder.

"Is.. everything okay?" I asked, turning to face him. He relaxed his face as he made his way back into the living room, sitting down across from me. Forcing a smile, he gently messed up Sophie's hair.

"No.." He said softly. "And.. I'm sorry you had to hear that. We.. we have to get head back once Addison gets home. I'm so sorry. I.. I wanted us to have tonight together but-"

"It's okay." I assured him. "We did. I loved our Valentine's Day. I.. I can't wait to see what you have planned for next year." His smile grew as he looked back up at me.

"Next year we'll have to find a sitter." He said, leaning in, gently kissing my cheek. I couldn't help but smile, staring back at him, feeling my heart beat faster.

"Is Sam okay?" I asked, looking back down at Sophie who had maneuvered around, now facing Jake. She reached out for his hands, tightly grabbing one of his fingers. Jake shrugged, looking down at her.

"Jess, I.. we're in a good place, right?" He asked.

"Of course we are.. why?"

"I just don't want this.. to ruin everything again."

"Jake, why would it ru-"

"Because I know how he gets, and I know how he feels, and.. I know how you.. felt? About him? And I'd.. I'd just prefer if.. you didn't talk to him when we got back." I felt my face get hot.

"Oh.. o-okay." I said softly, avoiding his eyes.

"I just don't think it'll help." I nodded.

He leaned over, pulling me close, kissing my forehead.

"But we still have some time before Addison gets home." He reached over for one of Sophie's toys, bringing it over to us. She started laughing, crawling over into Jake's lap.

"You are so good." He said, putting it into her hands. "You make this so easy." She pushed herself up, balancing on his legs, holding his face in her hands. His smile grew as he held his stare on her as she felt around.

"Da.." She said. My heart jumped as I stared back at him wide-eyed.

"W-what did she say?" I asked. He peeked over at me.

"Has she.. ever spoken before?" He whispered.

"I don't think so."

He reached down, gently holding her up to keep her balanced.

"Sophie, what do you want to say?" He asked. She giggled again.

"Da!"

"Jake, I.. I don't think we should push her.. I think Addison would want to-"

"Dada!" She finally yelled, jumping up and down.

My heart sunk.

Jake stared back at me, his face dropping.

"O-oh.. oh no.." He whispered. "What.. what do I do?" He mouthed to me. I shook my head. I had no idea how to handle this. He reluctantly turned back to her, forcing a big smile.

"No, not Dada.. Jake!" He said. "Uncle Jake!"

"Dada!" She yelled again, reaching up, wrapping her arms around his neck, resting her head on his shoulder. He hesitated before holding her close, gently rubbing her back.

And then we heard keys jingling outside, Addison making her way through the front door.

"Well, look at you two." She smiled, shaking her head, quickly sliding her heels off.

"You're home early." Jake said, turning to face her. She rolled her eyes, making her way over to us, plopping down on the couch.

"Yeah, they're not all gems out there." She sighed. "How was your night? Did she behave?" She leaned down, messing up Sophie's hair. Sophie clung to Jake, giggling to herself, hiding her face in his neck.

"Oh no.. she loves you." Addison laughed, leaning back on the couch. "Good luck leaving." Jake quickly shot me a look, biting down on his lip.

"We actually.. we do have to head out, though." He said softly. "Josh called and-"

"Oh, no.." She sighed, pushing herself back up. "Okay, well.." She got up, going into the kitchen, coming back with the bottle of champagne in hand.

"I meant it, I want you guys to have this. Congratulations. I'm so happy for you." Jake smiled, taking it from her.

"Thank you, Addison." He said, gently placing Sophie in her arms. I then saw her lip start to quiver, her eyes feeling with tears.

"Here we go.." Addison sighed, giggling to herself, holding Sophie close. "Baby, they'll be back, but they have to go home now, and you need a bath."

"Dada!" She screamed, reaching out for Jake. "Dada!"

And then Addison's eyes went wide, staring back at Jake.

"She.. did she.." She stopped. "She's never.." Sophie's cries turned to sobs as she tried to wiggle out of Addison's arms, grabbing towards Jake again.

"Sophie, it's okay, we'll be back to see you but you have to be a big girl, okay?" He said, gently running his fingers through her hair. She held her arms out for him, getting quiet as the tears rolled down her cheek.

"Dada.." She said quietly. He held his stare on her, and I could tell he was trying his hardest to hold back the tears starting to fill his eyes.

It broke my heart.

"We'll see you soon." He said softly, leaning in, gently kissing her forehead. I gave Addison a gentle smile as I followed Jake to the front door, sliding my shoes on.

"Please, come back whenever you want." She sighed, smiling back at us. "You're welcome anytime."

"Thank you." I nodded, looking back at Sophie, gently touching her cheek before following Jake out to the van. He was quiet as he walked over to the passenger's side, opening the door for me. I hopped in, giving him a gentle smile. He stopped, gently running his fingers through my hair, staring back at me with his usual dazed eyes.

"I love you." He sighed, pulling me into a gentle kiss. I held onto his shirt, pulling him in closer.

"And I love you." I said, holding my stare on him. His smile grew as he gently ran his fingers down my cheek, eventually backing away, shutting my door.

He was quiet for most of the drive, eventually reaching over, taking my hand, tightly intertwining our fingers. I gently rubbed the top of his hand with my thumb, keeping my eyes out the front window.

"Are you okay?" He finally asked. I bit down on my lip, nodding.

"Mhm.." I managed, feeling my face get hot. He nodded, keeping his eyes forward.

"Jess, when it's our turn.." He said softly. "I know you are going to be.. an incredible mother. And I can't wait to experience it." I felt my cheeks burn, my heart beating faster as tears came to my eyes.

"No matter what happens.. I'm lucky enough just to have you." I sighed, peeking over at him, his lips curling into a smile. "I am sorry our night had to be cut short though."

I moved my hand over, gently squeezing his leg, holding my stare on him. I could see his smile growing, his cheeks burning as he peeked over at me, biting down on his lip.

"Would be a shame to waste all that wine.. for nothing." He smirked, pulling into the venue parking lot. I watched as he drove past the bus, parking the van on the opposite side of the lot.

My heart jumped as he then turned to me, tangling his fingers in my hair, pulling me into a passionate kiss. I kissed him back harder as he effortlessly lifted me up, bringing me into the backseat. His hands slowly traveling down my body, tightly grasping my hips as I positioned myself in his lap, holding his face in my hands. His lips traveling to my neck, his kisses getting harder as he quickly lifted my shirt over my head, tossing it away. Reaching down, I grabbed the lever, instantly dropping his seat back. He stared up at me wide-eyed, giggling to himself as he tightly grabbed onto me. I couldn't help but laugh, pulling him back into a series of kisses, his lips curling into a smile.

"Promise me we'll still be like this when we have to get our own mini-van." He laughed, catching his breath. He reached up, gently running his fingers down my cheek. I nodded, kissing him again.

"Of course, you'll always be the cool dad." I smirked, unbuttoning his shirt, one by one. He bit down on his lip, staring up at me with lustful eyes, gently tangling his fingers in my hair. I ran my hands up his bare chest, tossing his shirt away. His smile grew as he pulled me back into a passionate kiss, his hands slowly moving down, unbuttoning my jeans, sliding them off, tossing them away.

"It'll be a little harder with carseats everywhere, though." He laughed, leaning his forehead against mine. I shook my head, a smile escaping my lips.

"Why is it always plural with you?" I laughed, my kisses moving from his lips, to his cheek, to his neck. His grip got tighter as he softly moaned in my ear.

"Mmmm.. w-why isn't it plural with you?" He giggled. "You know once we start-" I cut him off, pulling him into another long kiss.

"Shhh.." I smirked. "Just let me enjoy right now." He nodded, kissing me again, his hands slowly moving lower and lower until we both jumped at the sound of the loud banging against the van door.

"Jess!" They shouted, pounding their fist against the window. My heart dropped, my entire body feeling like it was on fire.

I'd know that voice anywhere.

Sam.
