《You're the One - Part 1 || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 168: Baby

When I got off stage, I could see Sadie hanging around in the wings, looking through her camera. I felt a smile escape my lips until she picked her head up to face me, flashing me a big smile, waving me down. I gave her a gentle wave, going over.
"Hey! You were great!" She said cheerfully. I nodded, forcing a smile.
"Thanks, did you.. get any good shots?" I asked. She nodded, looking back through her camera again.
"I think so, yeah. But.. I'll be able to see better later." I nodded, placing my bass down on the rack. I could feel her eyes on me as I began to make my way backstage. Finally, I stopped, turning to face her.
"Are you.. gonna meet back up with them?" I asked, motioning backstage. I assumed she would just be with The Envy for the most part of the night, just considering that Jess never really hung around anywhere we weren't. Then again, she never really had a reason to.
"Oh, um.. well.. Charlotte said they like to be alone after their set. So.. she said she'd come and find me once they were ready to leave." She said softly, her cheeks burning. I sighed, holding my stare on her for a moment.
"Do you.. I don't know.. wanna.. come hang out with us until they're ready?" I asked reluctantly. Her smile grew into a wide grin as she hopped up, nodding back at me.
"Oh, yeah! That would be great!" She said, now following me through the wings. I quickly made my way to the first dressing room before I ran into anyone else.
"So.. here's one of our dressing rooms." I laughed. "Not very exciting."
"Oh, how cool!" She said, placing her camera bag down, looking around. I shrugged, my smile growing.
"It's okay, I guess." She sat down on the couch, staring up at me with her same enthusiastic smile spread across her lips.
"This is all so exciting." She said softly. I went over, sitting down next to her.
"It is." I agreed. "But sometimes.. I don't know.. you miss the consistency of home." She nodded, turning to face me.
"Well, all I know is the consistency of home." She giggled to herself. "So.. this is still exciting to me." I nodded, remembering what it was like our first time on tour. I still loved it, but.. I missed this sense of excitement that she still had. For her sake, I hope she never lost it.
And then my head perked up as I heard footsteps making their way down the hall, finally turning into the doorway of the dressing room. My heart dropped when I saw Jess standing there, hand in hand with Jake, her eyes quickly shooting over.
"Jess!" I heard from next to me, my cheeks burning red. Jess quickly looked over at Jake, and then back to me. I could feel my heart beating faster and faster, unsure of how to react, eventually forcing a subtle smile.
"H-hi.." Jess eventually said. "Sorry, um.. do I know you?"

My mind went completely blank as her eyes met mine again.
"Jess, this is.. um.. uh-"
"I'm Sadie!" She said ecstatically, holding her hand out. "I'm The Envy's new photographer!"
Sadie. That's right.
I instantly saw Jess' face drop, her jaw clenching. I knew that would piss her off, and I was really hoping Sadie would've kept her mouth shut about it. But.. there was no avoiding it.
"Oh." Jess said simply. "Nice to meet you."
"I'm a huge fan of yours." Sadie gushed. "Your work is.. beautiful. You're actually the reason I got into this, so I hope one day I can be as good as you. I don't know, maybe working with you could help me! I'd love to learn from you, if you have anything you could teach me, I'd love to know."
I then saw Jess nod, biting down on her lip to hold in her smile as she peeked over at me. I felt my face get hot, smirking back at her, shaking my head, rolling my eyes. I knew what she was thinking. Sadie was the kind of girl we had always talked about, if only she knew that I was just being nice.
I missed being able to talk to her about anything. A few weeks ago, her and I would have ran off together, laughing about how much Sadie fangirled over her, all the while drinking too much and sitting way closer than people who were "just friends" should. I missed the gentle touch of her fingers gliding up and down my arm, her hand softly laid upon my leg while we sat in my bunk, her head resting on my shoulder as we watched the world outside fly by all the while we existed within a daydream of our own.
Now I knew that was just one more thing she would share with Jake.
It was unbearable how much I envied him.
"Um.. yeah, maybe. We'll see." She said in her fake-enthusiastic voice. I knew it well, just another thing we made fun of together. "But.. thank you, that really means a lot. Did.. did they send you over here?" She asked. Sadie quickly shook her head.
"Oh, no. Sam and I met before the show and he invited me and.. we've just been talking. Tonight is my first night. I'm really excited to see what life is like on the road." Jess nodded, peeking back over at me. My cheeks burned again, my body getting hot. I couldn't help but smile as she smirked back at me, no doubt judging me now. I knew what she was thinking. That Sadie was just another one of those girls that meant nothing. I flashed her wide-eyes my smile growing. Her cheeks burned red as she bit down on her lip, shaking her head.
I always loved how with just a look, it was like we could read each other's minds. I've never had this with anyone before, and chances are.. I never would again.
"Yeah, well.. it can be fun." She laughed, bringing her attention back to Sadie.
"And you must be Jake. I was able to catch a little bit of your set. You're great." She said, holding her hand out to him now. Jake's smile grew as he reached out, gently shaking her hand.

"Thank you, nice to meet you." He said simply. She nodded, quickly pulling her hand away.
Smart girl.
"I'm excited to get to know everyone." She said softly, her eyes darting back and forth between the both of them.
"Yeah, well.. we don't want to intrude on you guys." Jess said, giving Sadie a gentle smile as she started pulling Jake towards the door.
"Yeah, don't wanna bother the newly weds." I mumbled. My heart dropped as Jess' eyes shot back over to me, her face burning red. It had slipped out; I don't know what came over me. Sadie's eyes quickly shot back over to Jess, quickly looking down at her hand.
"OH! Are you two engaged? How exciting! Congratulations!" Jess hesitated for a moment, holding her glare on me before finally turning back to Sadie, forcing another fake smile.
"Y-yeah. Thank you. But.. we're kinda keeping it a secret with just.. family right now." She muttered.
"Oh, yeah, sure, no problem. Your secret is safe with me, don't worry!" Sadie nodded. I had a feeling it really would be, I don't think she'd ever risk getting on Jess' bad side.
"Thank you. Maybe we'll see you around." Jess said softly, her eyes angrily shooting over at me one last time before pulling Jake out of the room. Sadie waited for a moment before coming back over, sitting down next to me again.
"She's really nice." She beamed, staring up at me. "You're so lucky, she's gonna be your sister-in-law! I can't wait to get married one day, oh, I'm sure their wedding will be beautiful." My stomach dropped as I leaned back, running my hands through my hair. The last thing I wanted to do was talk about this.
"Yeah.. I'm sure it will be."
The room was still pitch back when I opened my eyes. Reaching around, I eventually felt my phone, sliding it out from underneath my pillow.
3:00 AM.
I placed it on my end table, now sitting up, letting my eyes adjust to the darkness. Looking over, I saw Jake still fast asleep, curled up, his body facing towards me. I couldn't help but smile, lying back down, maneuvering myself under his arm, nuzzling my face into his neck. I eventually heard him sigh, his grip on me getting tighter, pulling me up against him.
I could tell he was awake now.
"Hey.." I whispered, gently kissing up his neck. I heard him giggle as his hands gently traced up and down my back.
"Hi.." He sighed, pressing his lips against my forehead. "What are you doing up?" I shrugged, my kisses getting harder as they moved up to his cheek. I felt him smile, his hand slowly moving up to my neck, pulling me into a tired kiss. My heart jumped as I tangled my fingers in his hair, kissing him back.
"What's gotten into you?" He laughed, staring back at me with tired eyes.
"What do you mean?" I giggled, climbing on top of him, covering his face in a series of gentle kisses. He sighed, rubbing his nose against mine.
"Well, since I have you up.." He whispered, now propping himself up against the pillows, holding me close. "I was wondering if you wanted to visit Addison and Sophie with me.. we're gonna be out by them next week." I bit down on my lip, staring up at him, trying to contain my excited smile.
"Are you trying to trick me into the baby talk again?" I smirked. He nuzzled his face into my neck again, his drowsy laughter making my heart beat faster. He tangled his fingers in my hair again, gently massaging my head.
"I don't think I have to trick you anymore, I think you want it just as badly as I do.. like you're not trying to use me for it right now." He smirked. My cheeks burned bright red, my body feeling hot.
"I am not!" I laughed, playfully shoving him. He flashed me a wide grin, pulling me back up against him. "Well, I don't know.." I finally sighed, peeking back up at him. "I guess.. I have been thinking about it too." He stared back at me with dazed eyes, his lips gently grazing my neck as his hand moved onto my stomach.
"You would be so cute pregnant." He giggled. "Come here.."
He then wrapped his arm around me, pulling me back down next to him.
"Baby, I promise, I will rock your world again in the morning, but only if you let me sleep."
"Baby?" I asked, my smile growing. "Since when am I 'Baby?'"
"Since I've always wanted to call you that but now that I'm half asleep, I'm finally brave enough to try it out." He laughed, pulling me into another long kiss. I sighed, my lips curling into a smile.
I wouldn't question him on it again. I loved it.
"And what do you mean you're gonna rock my world again?" I laughed, backing away. "When was the last time?" He rolled his eyes, pulling me back into another series of kisses.
"Oh, don't act like you don't know when. I still have the scratches on my back to prove it." He sighed, pulling me back into another kiss. He was right. My lips moved down to his neck, my kisses getting harder as his grip got tighter.
"Jess.." He sighed, his hands slowly moving down to my hips.
"If you're gonna call me 'Baby,' then what do I call you?"
"You can call me whatever you want." He laughed. "Just as long as you always call me."
I rolled my eyes, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him into another passionate kiss.
"Jess.." He sighed again, backing away, leaning his forehead against mine.
"Are you saying no?" I asked, moving away. His smile grew as he shook his head, pulling me back in.
"Absolutely not." He laughed. "But Baby, if you want me that bad, you're gonna have to be on top."
