《You're the One - Part 1 || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 131: In The Morning

"Will you stop! Just stop! I don't know what you're trying to do, but you're fucking everything up!" I heard out in the hallway. My stomach dropped. I'd know that voice anywhere. I backed away, peeking over Sam's shoulder.
"Did you hear that?" I asked. He shook his head.
"I'm.. I'm sure it's nothing. People are yelling all the time back here." He laughed, pulling me back into another kiss. He was right, but.. I could swear that I heard-
"Who do you think you are, telling Jess that you are I are hanging out? Take a hint, okay! I don't want you! I want her!" He yelled.
I could feel my heart beating faster. That was Jake. And he was yelling.. at Charlotte? I felt my cheeks burn as I pulled away again, looking back over at the door.
"Sam, I think that's-"
"Really, Jess, I'm sure it's nothing." He said sweetly, staring back at me. I bit down on my lip, looking back up at him. Maybe he was right. And besides.. that wasn't my business anymore.
So.. he really wasn't hanging out with Charlotte? He did say he didn't want her. So she was just.. making it all up. I tried my hardest to contain my smile, but quickly shook the thought.
I couldn't get caught up in this again.
Okay.. so he wasn't interested in Charlotte, but that didn't mean that things were different. Chances are things were never going to change, and I just had to accept it. Besides, I literally had someone right in front of me who.. could actually talk to me; who made me feel safe and comfortable and.. loved, without having to worry about he was going to treat me tomorrow. And isn't this everything I've wanted? Everything I've had to beg Jake for..
"You're right." I sighed. His smile grew as his hands moved down to my hips, leaning in closer, kissing me again. I reached up, tangling my fingers in his hair, kissing him back. He winced, slightly pulling away.
"Oh, I'm sorry." I giggled. "Are you sure you're okay?" I asked, gently touching his cheek. He sighed, nodding.
"Yeah, just.. still a little sore."
"Do you need anything?" I asked. He smirked, shrugging back at me.
"Well.." He said, pulling me back into a gentle kiss. I couldn't help but smile, giggling to myself.
"...She deserves someone who can give her everything she wants and.. right now.. I.. I guess that's Sam. She needed me, and I wasn't there. I have to start taking responsibility too, and I am trying, but now she thinks I'm fucking around with you to spite her.."
My heart dropped.
I instantly pulled away, looking back over at the door. Sam stared back at me wide-eyed, his face dropping.
"Sam, I just think I should-"
"Jess.. don't go." He said softly. I felt my cheeks burn as I looked back up at him. My heart was pounding in my chest. I wanted nothing more than to run out after him but..
I knew that I couldn't.
"Okay." I finally said, giving him a gentle smile. He smiled back, taking my hand.
"Come on.. you wanna wait backstage with me?" He asked, motioning towards the door. I bit down on my lip, nodding as he helped me down from the countertop. He wrapped his arm around me, pulling me close, kissing the top of my head and lead me down the hallway towards his side of the stage.

After The Envy finished their set, Sam went over, grabbing his bass, tossing it over his head, and adjusted the strap. I hung back, standing up against the wall as I admired him in his new outfit; light blue jacket with pants to match, bare chest exposed underneath.
They all always looked so handsome on stage.
He caught me staring, smirking over at me.
"What?" He giggled to himself, his cheeks burning red. I shrugged, smiling back at him.
"Nothing." I sighed. "You look good." His smile grew as he looked down at his feet.
"Thank you." He said softly. "So do you." I shook my head, feeling my heart beat faster.
"So.. what's the plan for after the show tonight?" I asked. He shrugged.
"There's a bar down the road we were all thinking about." He said. I nodded.
"Another bar huh?" I laughed.
"Yeah, well.. there's not much else out here. Maybe when we get closer to your town you can show me a good night out." I nodded, reaching out for his jacket, pulling him in closer. He swung his bass behind his back, leaning one hand up against the wall as looked down at me, giving me a subtle smile.
"I'd like that." I said softly, reaching up, gently touching his cheek. He stared back at me with dazed eyes.
"You ready?" Danny said, making his way over. Sam sighed, pushing himself back off the wall, turning to face him.
"Oh, I'm ready." He laughed, swinging his bass back around. Danny peeked over at me, smirking as his eyes moved from mine, back to Sam.
"You've been on our side a lot." He laughed. My cheeks burned.
"Mhm.." I said, smirking back at him. Sam playfully shoved him, rolling his eyes, and then made his way back over to me.
"You'll be over here when I get off, right?" He asked cheerfully. I nodded.
"Of course." I said, my eyes moving back down to his lips. His smile grew as he reached over, holding my face in his hand, pulling me into a gentle kiss.
"Okay, good." He said softly.
"Have a good show." I said, quickly kissing him again before he followed Danny out onto the stage.
During their last song, I quickly ran down towards the front of the stage, snapping as many photos as I could. Their last song was what made the difference; they always changed it up and gave me so many opportunities for different shots. As I turned towards Jake's side, I saw him look down, holding his stare on me. My heart jumped. I waited for him to look away, but he never did. He held his stare on me, eventually giving me a subtle smile. I felt a smile escape my lips, my face getting hot. I snapped out of it, quickly making my way back towards Sam's side of the stage before the lights came up.
"How was that?" Sam yelled out, wrapping his arm around me, pulling me up against his sweaty chest. I laughed, trying to push him away, but it was no use. He held on to me tightly, kissing the top of my head.
"You guys were great." I said. He smirked back at me, scrunching up his face.
"Yeah, but how was I?" He laughed, leaning in, kissing my cheek.
"You were great too, I guess." I sighed, playfully rolling my eyes.
"Thank you." He said mockingly. He lifted his bass above his head, placing it down on its stand. "I'm just gonna get cleaned up, then we can all head out." He said, holding his hand out. I nodded, slipping mine into his, tightly intertwining our fingers.

After they were all done getting changed, we made our way down the sidewalk. Sam wrapped his arm around me, pulling me closer. I felt my heart jump every time Jake turned to talk to Josh, sneaking a peek back at us. I quickly looked down, avoiding his eyes.
As we reached the bar, Jake reached out, grabbing the door, holding it open for everyone. I felt my cheeks burn as I made my way through, peeking over at him. He gave me a gentle smile, motioning inside. I shook my head, giggling to myself, and then felt Sam's grip on me get tighter as he guided me the rest of the way in.
We found our table, Sam sat down next to me, gently pulling my chair towards him. Jake sat across from me, giving me a subtle smile, and then quickly looked back down.
"Shots for the table!" Josh called out, sitting down next to Jake.
"Shots already?" Danny laughed. Sam nodded.
"Shots!" He joined in, waving down the waitress.
"Did someone say shots?" She laughed as she approached us.
"Yeah, shots for everyone." Josh said, smiling up at her.
"Um.. just a water for me." Jake said quietly. She nodded, making her way over to the bar. I peeked up at him.
Weird. He was always the first one with a drink in his hand.
She quickly brought them over, handing them out to everyone. Josh held up his glass, and we all did the same.
"Here's to another great show. And to doing it all over again tomorrow!" He yelled, downing his drink. We all did the same. Jake nodded, holding up his water, taking a sip.
And then the night became a blur.
Before I knew it, there was another round on the table, and after that it was like I never had an empty glass in my hand again. I don't know what came over me, but I couldn't down them fast enough. After what I'm sure was a few hours, I stood up, instantly feeling the floor shifting from underneath me. I quickly grabbed onto my chair to catch my balance. Jake jumped up, reaching his arm out.
"You okay?" He laughed. I nodded, smiling back at him.
"Yeah." I giggled to myself. "I'm fine."
Sam looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot and a tired smile spread across his lips. He had had just as much to drink as I did.
"You okay, baby?" He managed, reaching up, gently touching my cheek.
"Yeah.." I sighed. He had never called me baby before, but I think I liked it.
"Um.. I.. I think I should head back to the bus." I said, looking over towards the door.
"I can take you back." Jake said, getting up. I peeked over at Sam who was now too involved in his conversation to notice.
"Thanks." I said softly, feeling my cheeks burn. He nodded, gently placing his hand on my back, guiding me out the door.
I felt myself start to sway, his hand slowly moving to my waist, holding me up.
"Woah.." He laughed. "Come here." I giggled to myself, feeling my heart beat faster, as I wrapped my arm around him. When we got to the bus, opened the door, carefully guiding me up the steps.
"Are you gonna stay with me?" I mumbled, leaning up against the table. He smiled back at me, biting down on his lip.
"I'm gonna help you get to bed." He laughed, reaching his hand out to guide me into the back room. I held out my hand, doing my best to keep myself up as I finally made it to the bedroom. Plopping down on the bed, I stared back up at him, admiring him as my eyes made my way up and down. He smiled back at me, taking my hand, pulling me to sit up.
"Come on.." He said sweetly. "Lift your arms." I lifted them up as much as I could without losing my balance. He grabbed the bottom of my shirt, pulling it over my head, tossing it over onto the floor. Looking around, he grabbed the first t-shirt he could find, and gently pulled it over my head, helping me slip my arms into the sleeves.
"Thank you." I said softly, holding my stare on him. I felt my heart jump as he looked back into my eyes, giving me a gentle smile. I saw his cheeks burn as my eyes moved down to his lips.
"What pants do you want?" He asked, breaking our stare, looking around the room.
"I don't want 'em." I mumbled, leaning my arms back onto the bed, keeping my eyes locked on him. I heard him giggle as he continued to look, eventually grabbing a pair of shorts from my suitcase.
"How about these?" He asked.
"Fine."
He came back over, grabbing my bottom of my pants, sliding them off and tossing them over into the pile of clothes. I smirked back up at him, reaching out. He laughed, shaking his head, gently sliding my shorts up my legs.
"Now go to sleep." He said softly, motioning towards the head of the bed. I bit down on my lip, holding my stare on him, feeling my heart beat faster. He stared back, his smile growing. I hesitated before eventually forcing myself up, crawling underneath my blankets, sitting back up to face him. He sat down next to me on the edge of the bed.
The room was starting to blur, but all I could focus on was him, how easy it was to get lost in his big, brown eyes, how much I wanted to kiss him again, how badly I wanted him..
"You were amazing tonight." I said softly, reaching up, gently touching his cheek. His smile grew as he gently placing his hand over mine.
"I didn't know you were looking at me." He said. I nodded.
"I'm always looking at you."
"I'm always looking at you, too."
My heart beat faster and faster the more the room seemed to spin. I moved my hand down, gently holding onto his arm to keep my balance.
"But.. you're always amazing." I muttered, my eyes moving back down to his lips. "At everything. It's actually.. kind of annoying." I giggled to myself, starting to sway. He flashed me a toothy smile, laughing.
"Well.. not everything." He said softly. "But I'm trying to be." He fingers gently traced along my cheek, burning where they lingered.
"And.. I loved the song you wrote for me. I'm sorry I didn't say anything." I sighed, reaching one arm up, wrapping it around his neck.
"It's okay." He said, shrugging. "I understand."
I held my stare on him, completely hypnotized.
"You should go to bed, Jess. You'll feel better." He said, gently running his fingers through my hair. I sighed, lying down, feeling my eyes start to close as the room continued to spin. Before he could leave, I reached out, grabbing his hand.
"Can you stay until I fall asleep." I said, forcing my eyes open to look at him again.
"Sure." He whispered, flashing me a smile, swinging his legs over, and lying down next to me. He gently played with my hair as I felt my eyelids get heavier.
"Jake, I.. I hope our kids look like you." I whispered, gently tracing my fingers across his chest. I could feel his heart beating faster.
"Y-you do?" He giggled. I nodded.
"Yeah.." I sighed. "Because.. you're so cute, and.. it makes it.. so hard to get mad at you." I laughed, nuzzling my face in his neck. He was quiet for a moment.
"I'm sorry for every time I made you get mad at me. I swear.. I'll never make you mad again." He said softly, peeking down at me. I pushed myself up to sit and face him again.
"Yes you will.." I managed, swaying. "But.. that's okay, because.. couples fight, right? And.. I only want to fight.. with you." He sat back up, facing me. My heart raced the longer he stared.
"Really?" He whispered. I nodded.
"Really." I sighed, leaning in, gently kissing him on the lips. I felt him sigh, gently kissing me back, reaching out, holding my face in his hands. He then backed away, leaning his forehead against mine.
But I didn't want it to end.
I grabbed onto his shirt, pulling him back in. I could hear my heart pounding in my ears, the room continuing to spin. If I didn't know any better, I would've thought it was just because of him. He backed away again, a wide grin spreading across his lips.
"Jess.." He sighed. "This is all I want but-"
"Me too." I said, clinging onto his shirt.
"I.. I don't want to take advantage of you." He said softly, running his fingers through my hair.
"Jake, you're not, I-" He leaned in, gently kissing my cheek.
"You had a lot to drink, Jess." He giggled to himself, staring back at me with dazed eyes. "And.. that's not how I want to do this. I'm.. I want to be better for you, and.. well, I kinda want you to remember it." He laughed. I nodded, biting down on my lip, staring back at him.
"Okay.." I sighed.
"But.. if you come and kiss me in the morning, then.. I'm all yours."
My heart jumped.
He leaned in, gently kissing my forehead before pushing himself up from the bed.
"Jake.." I said. He stopped.
"Yeah?" He asked, leaning in the doorframe. I bit down on my lip, feeling my whole body get hot.
"I love you." I blurted out. His smile grew into a toothy grin, his cheeks burning bright red.
"I love you more, Jess." He sighed, before turning out the light, and shutting the door behind him.
