This person wants to know how to get people to proofread their stories.

Hello there!

It's great that you're looking and thinking of ways to further your career in writing. Our team wishes you good luck with that! I haven't written a story seriously for years now but I do write essays for my classes in university and my lecturers are always stressing on the importance of proofreading your own writing. So here's the things that I usually do to proofread:

1. Use free websites or applications that can proofread your writing.

There are a lot of websites that are free for everyone to use to proofread their work and even if it doesn't work all the time for all parts but the fact that it is free is more than enough. There are actually a lot of proofreading website out there that are actually very great even though it is free. Grammarly is one such app for an example.

2. Read through your writing again after some period of time. Usually, what I do is, after I finished writing a part, I would put it aside and do something else and if I have a lot of time, it can be days before I read it again. By that time, I would usually catch a lot of errors that I might have missed during the first time I had written it and will also improve on things I can add. It's a great way to check up on your work regularly and let's you become a teacher of yourself.

3. Ask for a friend to check it for you.

I'm not a native speaker of English so my English might not be as good as a native speaker but among my friends, I'm among the ones that are good in English so my friends usually would ask for me to proofread their essays. So I would suggest that you do the same. Try to find someone that is willing to help but keep in mind, you should still pay them a little or pay for their dinner some times. However, you have to be upfront to them that you will not be able to pay the big money for it.

4. Search for a proofreader in the writing community. I haven't done this but back when I was still writing on Wattpad, I always stumbled across people that would offer themselves to beta-read or proofread a book. You can try to hit up the forums on Wattpad and search for one on there.

I hope some of these choices could work for you and once again, our team wishes you the best of luck in your writing career! Publishing a book is not easy so I hope you'll be able to persevere through it all and be successful!

Good luck,

The Advice Column Team
