The Uchiha clan was one of the most feared clans during the pre-village era. It was constantly at war with the Senju Clan. Near the end of the era, Madara Uchiha and Izuna Uchiha were born. Both awakened their Mangekyo Sharingan. Madara grew to lead the clan. But Madara soon began growing blind. Tobi claims that Izuna gave his eyes to Madara, while Itachi said that Madara took it by force. Either way, Madara implanted Izuna's eyes and gained the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan.
But soon after, The Senju offered peace with the Uchiha, and the opportunity to found a village, Konohagakure. Madara was reluctant to do so, but the other members pressured him into accepting. However, when Hashirama Senju was named the first Hokage, Madara left the village. He returned to destroy it and was confronted by Hashirama. The place of their battle became known as The Valley of the End. Madara lost the fight and was presumed dead. However, Madara survived took Hashirama's DNA, and later gained the Rinnegan.
The second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, ensured that the Uchiha would never have a place of power in the village politics again by establishing them as the police force. Then, during the Fourth's reign, Tobi attacked the village with Kurama, claiming to be Madara Uchiha. The Third became suspicious that the Uchiha were planning a coup and forced the once-proud clan into a small corner of the village. This led to much distrust between the Uchiha and the village.

Soon, the fears turned real, and the Uchiha, led by Fugaku Uchiha planned a coup d'etat. While the Third tried to negotiate, time ran out, and Itachi Uchiha, to save the life of Sasuke Uchiha and prevent a civil war, eliminated the Uchiha in a single night with the aid of Tobi. He did not, however, kill Sasuke.
