《Her Beast》Chapter 13: Always the baby

Blurred lights passed us as Sebastian's truck passed through the bright city. Zoey kept her eyes trained out the window.

The car was filled with uncomfortable silence; you could cut it with a knife. Zoey was the hardest time communicating with Sebastian, and she wasn't sure why.

"So, um, where are we going?" she asked, realizing this would have been a good thing to ask early on in the night.

"We're going to meet some of my friends."

Zoey nodded as she wrapped her arms tightly against herself.

She wasn't sure how much time passed, but eventually, they pulled into a familiar parking spot. Bright neon words shone pink light down on the cars. Night lights club.

Zoey inwardly groaned. She hated this place.

"What are we doing here?"

"Well, for one, it's the only place that will let in underage drinkers. And two, you ask too many questions."

Did I? she seemed to recall only asking him two. But A particular Beast would agree with him on that one.

Zoey followed him inside, and the bouncer did indeed ignore her age as he did last time. The place was unbelievably loud and smelled like sweat and alcohol.

Zoey was able to take a better look around this time as last time, she was in too much pain to be aware of her surroundings. The place was extensive with two floors. The second floor had balconies that looked down at the people dancing. It also had minimal lighting besides the bar and a few tables with brighter lighting.

Zoey felt out of place as she looked at the other women here. They strode around confidently like they owned the place. She hoped, with time, she would be more like that.

Zoey followed Sebastian to a table where three other men and a woman sat.

"Seb! We've waited forever for you, man. What took you so long?" One of the men asked. He looked the friendliest out of the group with his playful smile. While the others looked annoyed.

"Sorry, Jay, I was with Adam."

The group looked over to Zoey once they noticed she was with Sebastian.

"Oh, this is Zoey. She's Adam's sister."

Zoey waved at them, but she tucked her hand back to her side when no one made a reaction.

"Right, you're the unaccomplished sister."

Zoey's jaw dropped right open at Jay's comments. She didn't realize Adam talked about her in that way.

"It's alright, though. Nothing to be ashamed of. You're still young." She set him a thankful smile.

Sebastian had Zoey sit down next to Jay as it seemed the others weren't too keen on her being there. He left, letting them know he'd be back. Zoey was eager to follow him as she didn't want to be left alone with strangers. Even though he was still a stranger to her.

"How do you all know Adam?"

As expected, Jay was the only one who responded.

"We all work with him."

Zoey nodded, but truth be told, she had no idea where Adam worked. She knew it was some company in the city, but that was it. She didn't really care to find out until now.

"How old are all of you?"

Zoey was curious if all the people Adam spent his time with were young, like Sebastian.

"Well, Daniel is twenty-eight," Jay replied, pointing to the man sitting on the edge. He wore all black, and his expression was as dark as his clothing.

"Scarlett is twenty-six." Zoey looked over to the only woman in the group. She had light, silky hair and dark eyes with thick lashes. She wore a tight blue dress which Zoey thought didn't exactly match her personality. Her features were emotionless but seemed to be on the brink of turning into a frown.

"Carter is twenty-seven. He and Scarlett are married." The other man was honestly huge. He barely fit in his seat as his bulging muscles took up most of the room. Zoey didn't look at him too long in fear he would react to it.

"And the greatest of all, me. I'm twenty-five. And Sebastian is the runt of the group, being he's twenty-three."

They all seemed to be spread out in age, but they were way older than Zoey.

"How old are you, kitten?"

Zoey fidgeted with her fingers as Jay moved uncomfortably close. Her body tensed as he placed his hand on hers.

"N-nineteen." She cursed the stutter that slipped out. A mischievous smile spread across his lips.

Luckily before he could say anything else, Sebastian set a tray of drinks down on the table. The group immediately grabbed theirs and began gulping the alcohol down like starved animals.

"I got these ones for you, Zoey."

He set two shot glasses in front of her. "Thank you, but I don't drink."

"Come on, Zoey, live a little. Anyway, Adam told me I need to make sure you're having a good time."

Zoey glanced over to the group, her ears turning red with their eyes on her. She didn't want them to think she was the innocent little teenager they saw her as, so she took the shots. The alcohol burned her throat and twisted her face from the taste.

Jay suddenly stood up from the table, looking down at Zoey.

"Do you want to dance?" He asked, sticking his hand out for her to take.

"Oh, I don't know-" He grabbed her hand and pulled her to the dance floor before she could even react.

"Be nice, Jay!"

"I'm always nice!" Jay shouted back at Sebastian.

Zoey was already feeling anxiousness crawl up her neck. Her heart was hammering in her chest.

Jay pulled her close to him and started swaying his body to the music.

"I don't know how to dance," she admitted as he danced in front of me.

"I'll show you."

He grabbed her hips and helped her sway to the music. She tried to loosen up, but all she could hear was you look ridiculous in the back of her head.

Jay led her back to the bar and ordered them more drinks. Zoey didn't feel like drinking anymore, but he had already paid, and she didn't want him to think ill of her.

Zoey downed more of the drinks and started to feel light-headed, and her face felt hot. Jay led her back to the dance floor. This time he pulled her hips to his front. She could fill his hands travel over her body, but her head was so fuzzy she couldn't think to stop him. Instead, she felt her own body move against his own. His lips found the back of her neck and began to kiss down to where her neck met her shoulder. Her nose dragged up and wrinkled as distasteful shivers ran down her spine. Still, she couldn't get her body to move away.

He pulled her dress from her neck but stopped the movement of his lips once he came across her healing bite mark.

"What is this?" He whispered, his hot breath unpleasantly hitting the healing skin. He seemed to be talking more to himself rather than Zoey. He suddenly whipped her around to face him. His playful smile was gone, and his eyes stared deep into her soul.

"Who marked you?"

Zoey squinted her eyes, trying to make sense of his words. Jay roughly grabbed her wrist. His fingers dug painfully into her skin as he pulled her to where Sebastian was dancing with some girl.

Jay whispered something to him. Sebastian's body instantly tensed, and his wide eyes snapped to Zoey's. "Shit!"

He pushed the girl from him and headed towards the club's exit, Jay and Zoey following close behind him. She furrowed her eyes brows at their actions. What was going on?

Jay shoved her roughly against Sebastian's red truck. She yelped as her elbow hit against the metal.

"Who marked you?!" He growled. She gasped, not expecting this side from him. She had only seen his playful, energetic side, but it was replaced with pure raw anger.

"Jay, calm down. Can't you see she's upset?" She didn't realize the hot tears falling down her cheeks until he said something.

"Zoey, I just want to know, and then you can go. Who marked you?"

"I don't know what you mean?"

"Lies!" Jay shouted; his eyes burned in a fiery rage. Zoey whimpered, looking at his eyes that seemed to have a faint glow.

"Jay! Stop." Sebastian eyed her cowering, shaky form. "You really don't know what we're talking about, do you?"

Zoey shook her head. She didn't understand why they reacted like that to seeing the Beasts bite.

Sebastian ran his finger over the slightly exposed bite. She yanked her shoulder away from him as disgust filled her insides. She didn't like people touching it.

He didn't seem surprised by her actions. Actually, he seemed like he expected it.

"Who gave you that?" she placed her hand over it, blocking it from their view. Something told her she shouldn't tell these men the truth.

"I-I don't know. I woke up one morning with this on my neck. I passed out at a friend's house, so I assumed her dog must have done it."

Neither of them made a reaction which made her wonder if they believed her story or not.

"Does Adam know?"

"No, I didn't feel it was that big of a deal to let him know."

"Well, you should probably let him know, so it doesn't get infected."

A look of puzzlement crossed her face. She was so lost. Why did Jay lose it over a small bite, especially when they were worried it would get infected?

"Well, I better get Zoey home."

Sebastian opened the door for her, and she climbed in with great relief. She was finally able to leave.

"But-"

"No, Jay, not tonight."
