《Taking My Heart (Completed)》2. Fur Babies

No sooner than I open the door to my clinic all types of sounds hit my ears. Barks, meows, growls and whines let it be known of each and every one of their discontent with having to be staying here with me in the clinic.

The poor fur babies I feel the most sorry for it the families that will board them here just so they can go on vacation.

There has been two occasions where a family dropped off their beloved pet just to never come pick them up after boarding them here with my clinic. Which is where I took in both of my babies I keep with me all the time.

A sweet husky, who I call Oreo.

Then my lovable gray cat, I call Fluffier.

This has been my life for the last year and a half. After pushing myself to go and pass all my classes with the highest scores possible. High school felt to easy and I needed to make a purpose for my life, so I worked hard and graduated earlier and got in college before I was eighteen. I received my veterinarian degree and license by the time I was twenty-five.

Normally I stay the night here in the clinic with all the animals that have to stay within the kennels because it doesn't feel right for them to alone. Last night though my little sister Lola stayed with them. She just got out of high school not to long ago. Lola has a passion for animals just like I do, and she wanted to work for me.

Oreo and Fluffier stays with me when I am here too, but they get to roam the clinic freely. Neither one of them go out the door unless I let them out in the fence section to do their business out there. Both of my fur little ones are glued to me and won't roam, something they both have done since I kept them and shown love.

"Morning, sis." I smile at Lola.

"Morning. Want some coffee?"

"I wouldn't say no. How was everything last night?"

Lola smiles. "All of them were angels last night. The tempature on the german sheperd has stayed stable through the night as well."

"That is great. Sounds like he will be able to go home today." I nod.

"I will call the owners by noon." Lola hands my coffee over.

"Thanks."

The back door opens once again and Oreo prances over to get his morning pettings.

"Hey guys." Jovi smirks and pets Oreo, who is not giving him a choice.

Lola and I both bid him a good morning. Lola blushes and walks to the front desk area. I giggle lightly at her because it is cute how my little sister still has a crush on Jovi.

Her little crush has been going on for years. Nothing will ever happen from it and it is not because Jovi is a playboy or thinks she isn't cute. It will not happen because Jovi prefers the company of his own gender.

Jovi is also the only guy I have any actual conversations with and have close to me. We have been friends since we were young teens in middle school. He knows every single thing that has happened in mine and Lola's life for the last fourteen years.

I walk over to the schedule calendar and see that I am set up for vaccines this morning. First thing is to check on the all the ones we have in the kennels and see who may be ready to go home from the surgeries or illness.

"Do you have them this morning?" Jovi walks over.

"Oh yeah, just checking these guys out."

"The patients in kennels twelve and nine should be ready to go home today also. Those were the spays I done yesterday." Jovi looks at some papers.

"Sounds great. I will check them out for you and give the papers to Lola to call the owners for pick up." I nod.

"Thanks. I will get the vaccines ready for us today." Jovi walks out of the kennel area.

Jovi is also a vet along with me. He works here and between the three of us makes up everyone here in the clinic. The only reason I had the money to start this up was from holding two jobs while going through college. Still it was no easy feat to get to this point in the least, but it also helps the town needed a vet clinic and I keep the prices reasonable too.

Right as I walk to the front to hand Lola the papers, I can see Jovi getting his first appointment.

"I will get these owners called. Oh, this is the mail that came in late last night." Lola hands me some letters.

I take them and walk to the back where not only is mine and Jovi's desks are, but the kitchen area along with the one cot left here to sleep on. The letters are from owners thanking us for watching their baby and then one is a thanks on how we cared for theirs during illness. I staple them on the wall with all the other letters and a smile spreads over my face. These simple letters bring joy to me because I love tending to all the fur pets and their owners took just a small moment to thank us.

With a deep breath, I walk back to the front and call in the first patient I have for the day.

Even if most of the animals today will hate me, at least they are going to stay healthy. I pull out a treat to win their hearts over to where I can examine them before I give them their vaccines.

Days like today is when Oreo and Fluffier both will hide under the cot. It seems like they know the needles are out and want no part in it whatsoever.

Lola locks up the clinic's front door when the last animal is seen for the day.

"I got the ones in the kennels tonight." I smile to Jovi and Lola.

"Okay, sis." Lola hugs me before leaving.

Jovi sticks around and eyes me.

"What?" I look back at him with a raised eyebrow.

"You seriously need to get out more." He sighs.

"I am good right here and where I am in life." I sass.

"Samantha, not all men are what you perceive them to be." Jovi gives me a knowing look.

"I know that. You're not, but your not on the market either." I tease.

Jovi has been going steady with a local and they have fallen hard for each other. Nights he doesn't stay here his is rather busy.

Jovi chuckles and shakes his head.

"You know how I feel after what happened Jovi. I am just not ready to open my heart up because I can't become like I have seen others become with a broken heart on top of things that happened." I shrug.

Jovi hugs me tight all of a sudden before he lets go and grabs his shoulder bag. "Love will hit you when you least expect it, Samantha. It is a day I am waiting for it to happen for you. As your friend I want what is best for you and want to see you happy."

"I am happy Jovi." I smile.

Jovi nods. "True but I am waiting for you to meet the right one, who can change your views on love."
