《RANK》Chapter 1

Nya wasn't normally a nervous being, but the presence of Alpha Vince was overpowering. She had heard many things about him, but nothing could prepare her for what it was like to be the center of his attention. She didn't know he was going to interview her personally. None of the others from the pack were. They would have said something she was sure. She adjusts herself in her seat and swallows.
His large muscular frame lowered itself in the seat across the rectangular marble desk in front of her. His honey-brown eyes hooded from his furrowed brows held focus on the red folder in his hands with her name and rank on it. Nya Iris Till Rank 4.
Her eyes divert to his tattoo-covered forearms trying to make out the well-defined artwork when the sudden ticking of his neatly trimmed jaw catches her attention. Of course, he's mad. He's the most powerful of all the alphas, with the strongest, most lethal of all packs, and the weak was sitting before him.
"Nya..." her name rumbles through his throat.
The sound made her feel like she was tasting a dark rum spiced chocolate and that if she ate enough, it would intoxicate her.
"Sit up straight."
"Yes sir." She aligns her back and settles her palms over the hem of her denim shorts. She could see the distaste in his eyes when his gaze shifted on her. He believed all in her rank belonged with the humans. He refused to allow Ranks 3 and 4 remotely close to his pack grounds, let alone in it. Except, for now, that is.
Her pack was invaded by the Rogues and their alpha murdered. They fled and spent the last eleven days evading them. The Dark's were the only pack strong enough to protect them.
"13%"
"Excuse me?"
"You're only 13% wolf." He leans back confidently, leaving the folder on the desk and rubbing his square chin with ease. "What can you do for this pack if I let you stay?"
Her lips parted. Sure she knew her wolf gene was low, but not that low.
Bright and early this morning her entire pack was sent to the clinic. Their blood was taken but she didn't put two and two together until now. "I..." she begins and ends up taking a breath instead. She curls hair behind her ears and bites her lips. Abnormal was the only way to describe how she was feeling. Normally she was always sorta numb, but Alpha Vince was different.
She heard about his strict attitude, and commanding aura, she kinda blew it off but experiencing it was something entirely different.
"Let me rephrase my question." He tries again and with an impatient tone. "In an emergency, when the pack needs to be defended... What can you do with the 13% of wolf gene that resides in you? Can you help?"
She thinks, and after a beat responds with. "I can gather the children and if we plan an escape route..."

*Knock Knock knock* He slams his knuckles onto the desk causing her to flinch for a second which was also abnormal for her. "It's 3 a.m. You open your door and it's a warring pack. What escape route? Whose children can you protect?"
She was speechless, which wasn't different for her. Her brain processed and analyzed before a word came out; sometimes nothing would come out.
Suddenly, she felt a sneeze coming, but it wasn't a sneeze at all. It's the feeling she got when one of the biggest problems in her life occurred. Her glowing eyes. A glitch she likes to call it. It was the only thing about her that was wolf-like. Sometimes in the most inopportune times, like when around humans, her eyes would glow a golden color. Like now in front of the alpha of all alphas. She had no control over it, and no one could tell her why it was happening to her, other than her mixed with human blood being a factor of course.
The sound of a short circuit buzzes in her ear and her eyes light up.
His left brow quirks up. "What the hell is this?"
She immediately bows her head and squeezes her eyes shut. "I can't control it."
After a few seconds, she heard the buzzing sound again and knew that it was safe to open her eyes.
His discomfort was clear. He pinched the bridge of his nose and dragged his fingers through his short black hair. A laugh was next, not a haha I'm having fun laugh, but a, is this actually fucking happening laugh.
"I'm sorry."
He releases a breath. "Don't bother."
"Yes sir." She stands. "I'll just go now." She notices he begins rubbing his temple like she was giving him a headache. She had to get out of there. She turns for the door in a hurry and tried to jet out the door as fast as her feet would let her, only to reach for the door handle and be stopped.
Alpha Vince's firm body was suddenly pressed against her back, his hot breath blew against the skin of her neck and his callus palm covered her hand on the door. "Did I say you could leave?"
She gasps when he harshly flips her back against the wall, pins her wrist down like staples, and hovers his glare over her confused eyes.
"No sir." Her heart slammed against her chest so hard she was sure he could hear it and her breaths deepened so much his scent filled her lungs unintentionally. She wiggles her wrists, the ones being wrapped by his fingers. "What are you..."
He cuts her off. "Look at me when I tell you this..." He speaks through his teeth.
She obeys and connects with his eyes.
"Never, and I mean NEVER." He emphasizes. "Would it happen... not even in your dreams."

Dare she ask? "What sir?"
He furrows his brows and searches her for moments before saying. "You know."
She shakes her head subtly. "I don't..."
He releases her. There was something in his gaze. A change of some kind, like he realized or figured something out, but she wasn't going to try and analyze it. "Can I go now, Alpha sir?"
"Go." He growls.
Vince was disappointed that the rogues were able to successfully invade and take over another pack, but at the same time, it wasn't his priority, until he heard of the arrival of the Slays. He rolled his eyes. They were one of the weaker known packs, accepting the gutter low wolves. They decided to intentionally carry the weak and now required help when their strength failed.
He had many more precedent matters on his schedule so he ordered his beta to give them all a place to sleep for the night and to instruct the whole pack to be at the auditorium by 9 am. It was 8:58 now as he stalked onto the stage confidently and looked over the podium at the sea of wolves waiting for him to speak. He glances in the first row to the right where his girlfriend Malina, was sitting. The strongest she-wolf known. He admired her for a moment, her perfect posture, long hair pulled in a tight low ponytail, and her dark brown catlike eyes. She exuded a combination of femininity and strength. She is the only reason he was allowing the low ranks to stay in his pack grounds for even a moment. It was her father that was killed and she considered these weak beings her family.
"Wolves..."He begins. "As you can see we have visitors. Their pack was invaded and their alpha murdered. Let us have a moment of silence for Alpha Greyson of the Slays." He looks around at his pack as they close their eyes and bows their heads in a moment of respect. His attention falls on Malina again. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. "He will be missed." He takes a breath and scans around waiting for all eyes to be on him before he continues. "That brings me to other news. I have decided to make Malina my Luna, officially." He shifts his gaze back on her. Her eyes widened in shock. He didn't tell her what he was about to do. He didn't feel the need. In the five years, they have been together she has been wanting to marry him for four of them.
"That being said, I'm allowing a merge between packs, but not all will be accepted. The Slays will be interviewed and tested on..." He notices something in the far back of the crowd. Two yellow lights. He squints and makes out that it was the eyes of a female. She was shorter than the average with black mid-length hair. Her eye color was crystal blue and her lips were natural red. She had high cheekbones and a straight nose, and then it hit him. A strong feeling of pulling towards her, like he was magnetically charged. Cool tingling air rushed to his lungs and all the feeling in his legs went out. He drops to his knees. He didn't know such feebleness existed. His eyes shut themselves and all he could see was her face. Protectiveness, care, happiness, a feeling of yearning and more flooded his insides. It was almost overbearing.
He realized immediately that he imprinted on her. He wanted to deny it. Wolves didn't imprint anymore. The bloodline, with all the mixing with humans, was watered down. Imprinting didn't exist anymore, but there was no denying that he just did, and it angered him.
His pack rushed to his side. Something like this just didn't happen. There must have been something incredibly wrong. Hands began touching him and he was frozen for moments too long. Boiling anger was rising and rising. "Don't touch me!" He barks.
Everyone backed away.
Vince finds the strength to rise and growls out.
"Dismissed." Causing everyone to disburse.
He goes to his study and takes a seat behind his desk. The room seemed more like a library than a study. With high ceilings and tall bookshelves in every corner stocked with books. There were round stairs on both ends that took you to a balcony overlooking the first floor and more books.
He leaned his back into the brown leather of his seat and closed his eyes. He was in so much turmoil trying to figure out what just happened to him. How it could have happened, or why? He was shocked beyond belief. Imprinting didn't happen anymore. It hasn't happened in hundreds of years. The bloodline of werewolves was just too diluted. The centuries of mixing with humans almost wiped out their kind entirely. It was his father who brought them back. Set rules, order, and a standard, like the rank system. No wolf shall mate with a human or wolf in a lower rank than themselves.
"Vin." Beta Bent, comes to his side with his arms crossed behind his back waiting for direction.
Vince shifts his heavy gaze to his brother. He almost felt like he had a hangover. All of the emotions and the feeling of pulling that came alone with imprinting had him drained. For the first time, he felt what weak was like and it was sending him up a wall. He wondered for a split second how she must be feeling. If he imprinted that means she must have. He yanked the thought out of his head. "Send all the Slays to the clinic for a blood test." He orders. "And start the interviews."
